  • What the world looks like when humans stay home

    4:39

As much of the globe continues to stay home to practice social distancing, vibrant cities have gone quiet, and animals are freer to roam. The rare absence of human activity grants us a special glimpse of what the world might be like without us in it. Jeffrey Brown has the story for ongoing coverage of arts and culture, Canvas.

  • What Humans Will Look Like In 1,000 Years

    2:52

There will eventually be a day where prosthetics are no longer just for the disabled. However, it’s not just our outside appearance that will change – our genes will also evolve on microscopic levels to aid our survival.

For example, an Oxford-led study discovered a group of HIV-infected children in South Africa living healthy lives. It turns out, they have a built-in defense against HIV that prevents the virus from advancing to AIDS.

And with gene-editing tools like CRISPR, we may eventually control our genes and DNA to the point where we make ourselves immune to disease and even reverse the effects of aging.

Another way to jump-start the human evolution on a different path is to move some of us to Mars. Mars receives 66% less sunlight than Earth. Which could mean humans on Mars will evolve larger pupils that can absorb more light in order to see. And since Mars’ gravitational pull is only 38% of Earth’s, people born on Mars might actually be taller than anyone on Earth. In space, the fluid that separates our vertebrae expands, which led American aerospace engineer, Robert Zubrin to suggest that Mars’ low gravity could allow the human spine to elongate enough to add a few extra inches to our height.

However, not even a move to Mars could spark the biggest change in human evolution that we may have coming in the next 1,000 years: immortality. The path to immortality will likely require humans to download their consciousness into a machine. Right now, scientists in Italy and China are performing head transplants on animals to determine if you can transfer consciousness from one body to another. They claim their next big step is to transplant human heads.

Whatever happens in the next 1,000 years — whether we merge with machines or become them — one thing is certain: The human race is always changing — and the faster we change and branch out from Earth, the better chance we have of outrunning extinction.

  • What will humans look like in 100 years? | Juan Enriquez

    15:46

We can evolve bacteria, plants and animals -- futurist Juan Enriquez asks: Is it ethical to evolve the human body? In a visionary talk that ranges from medieval prosthetics to present day neuroengineering and genetics, Enriquez sorts out the ethics associated with evolving humans and imagines the ways we'll have to transform our own bodies if we hope to explore and live in places other than Earth.

  • An Advanced Species May Have Lived on Earth Before Humans

    7:17

The Silurian Hypothesis, which assesses modern science's ability to detect evidence of a prior advanced civilization, is a thought experiment. Could there have been a technologically advanced species before the homo sapiens? Why is there a possibility of this being true, when we haven't found any evidence of it, but found evidence of other species like the dinosaurs? All this and more is explained and discussed in a video here on Novella's Youtube Channel.

The earth has gone through countless changes in its history. Antarctica at one time was not covered with ice, and could have been home to ancient humans. As we develop new methods for uncovering the ice, we are beginning to see the possibilities that lay below. Mainstream ideology puts forward the Out of Africa theory, which tracks humans originating in Africa and spreading out by land across the world. However, genetic research is finding evidence that makes our story far more complex. One of these findings is the discovery of the Denisovan people of Siberia, which reveals an entirely new, intelligent human subspecies (first discovered in 2008). It is findings like this, that cause us to have to rewrite human history.

  • Why humans run the world | Yuval Noah Harari

    17:09

Seventy thousand years ago, our human ancestors were insignificant animals, just minding their own business in a corner of Africa with all the other animals. But now, few would disagree that humans dominate planet Earth; we've spread to every continent, and our actions determine the fate of other animals (and possibly Earth itself). How did we get from there to here? Historian Yuval Noah Harari suggests a surprising reason for the rise of humanity.

In part 2 of our special series on human ancestry, we ask why we are the only surviving branch on the human evolutionary tree. Just 50,000-100,000 years ago, Earth was home to three or four separate human species, including our most famous cousins: the Neanderthals. New research has shown that Neanderthals were not the brutish, unintelligent cavemen that cartoons make them out to be. They were creative, smart, social, and perhaps even had complex language. So why did they go extinct as soon as Homo sapiens moved into their territory? Does any trace of them live on today? Why don’t we have Neanderthal neighbors?

  • What If Humans Had No Hair at All?

    8:44

Hair. It’s all around you. Tiny, almost invisible, or really, really long! You might even try to get rid of some of it, but hair keeps coming back. There are few body parts that aren’t covered with hair, like our palms, soles, and lips. Palms would stay the same in a hairless world, but you’d probably have different hands - with no fingernails at all. They’re technically hair - they’re made of keratin too. Modified hair at your fingertips!

If you enjoy mellow bird songs, music or the sound of the ocean, congrats, you have hair! Sounds weird, but tiny hairs in your ear actually help you hear everything around you. There are tiny hair cells with tiny bristles in the inner ear and they kind of brush against sensory cells which help detect sound. When you get older, some of these hairs fall out, so it’s harder to hear things. But in a hairless world, we’d all be deaf! What else would be different if we had no hair?

↓↓↓More info and sources below ↓↓↓

In part 1 of our special series on human ancestry, we tour through our family tree to meet our ancestors and distant cousins, and to find out what made us human along the way.
The story of human ancestry is not a simple progression from primitive apes to us, with all the ape/human intermediates in between. The real human story is much richer and more complex, full of branches, gaps, and shadowy parts. A century and a half of fossil finds tells us perhaps two dozen human species lived on Earth between now and the time when our ancestors split from chimpanzee ancestors. The new era of DNA and genetics is upending that story yet again.

  • 15 Things Dogs Hate about Humans

    7:38

In this video, we’ll discuss the top 15 things dogs hate about humans

    Being Rushed at Potty Time
Dogs want to be able to take their time when they go out to potty. Aside from doing their business, they also like to have some time to explore and sniff. Instead of rushing your dog, train them to come back when they are done. This is easily done with treats and positive reinforcement.

    Badly Timed Walks
Make sure you pay attention to your dog’s cues. If it is too hot or too cold out, a walk may not be the best idea. Oftentimes, humans like a midday walk. But keep in mind that in the middle of summer, the pavement could be scorching hot and very uncomfortable on your dog’s paws. In the winter, you will want to make sure the temperature is not too cold and that there is a place to walk where the snow is not cumbersome. Dogs can get snow in between their toes, making it painful to walk.

    Poor Nail Trimming
If you are not sure how to do it properly, it is better left to a professional. If you cut your dog’s nails too short, you will be cutting their quick, a blood vessel and nerve found in the nail. This can result in a lot of blood and it hurts your dog.
On the flip side, if the nails are too long after clipping, they get in the way of your dog’s walking and can cause pain.

    Deserting and Isolating
Dogs are pack animals. When they are in the wild, they do everything together and they are loyal to the pack. For a domestic dog, you are the leader of their pack. When you are not able to spend enough time with your dog, they can develop separation anxiety.

    Hugging
Even though it’s tempting, full-body hugs aren’t good for dogs. A hug is usually threatening or unwelcome to them, especially if they feel trapped.
Dogs are not human so having someone come up and wrap their arms around their body or neck may be disconcerting. Rather than hugging a dog, let the dog lean into you and pet them on their back and chest.

    A Tight Leash
Dogs get irritated if they are being pulled on their leash all the time. It is painful and it can injure them and also frustrate them. A dog can easily be leash trained with the use of a proper harness and positive reinforcement.

    Deviating from the Schedule
Dogs are creatures of habit. They get accustomed to a schedule and come to expect certain things at certain times. Try to have a regular schedule for everything from feeding to play-time.

    No Opportunity to Explore
Dogs need their exercise and love going on walks. But going for a walk and not having a chance to explore is no fun at all.
Dogs see the world primarily through scent. Rushing your dog through a walk without allowing them to stop is unkind.

    Making them Apologize
Many people think that dogs know when they have done something wrong because they look guilty. But in reality, your dog isn’t sorry that they have chewed your shoes or knocked over your plants. Scientists believe that dogs can’t feel complex emotions such as guilt or shame. Your dog is just reacting to your body language and the tone of your voice. They appear scared or upset because you are angry at them.

Your House Has Scents They Hate
Dogs have about a 1000-10,000 of your ability to perceive scents. There are smells that we may barely notice but they could be very annoying to your dog. Try to minimize perfumes, cleaning products, vinegar, chili peppers, and citrus scents. This is not to say these items can’t be in your house at all but you should provide a place for your dog where the scent would not be a problem.

    Inconsistency
Make sure that you all use the same hand signals and verbal commands with your dog so they know what you want. Giving mixed signals will confuse and frustrate your pet.

    Bath time
Dogs hate getting a bath due to a variety of reasons. Their aversion to bathing goes far beyond the concept of getting wet. They might hate the smell of the shampoo, or they might be afraid of the running water.

    Phrases
Commands with too many words confuse and frustrate them. Use keywords rather than long phrases, and reinforce these words with gestures and body language.

    Past Trauma
The Humane Society speculates that some dogs are born with certain fears. They can also develop fear from past trauma. Many dogs fear loud noises, and any loud and unfamiliar sound may startle them.
Yelling at your dog is another way that creates anxiety and stress.
Dogs can also be afraid of thunderstorms and fireworks. You can't control forces of nature but you should avoid taking your pet to places where their fears may intensify.

    Dressing your dog
Don’t buy clothes for your pet just because they may look cute in them.
When it is cold, you may want to dress your dog for walks but also, keep in mind that they have fur to help regulate their body temperature. If you do live in a colder climate and choose to use a jacket, ensure that it is not restrictive.

  • How Humans Evolved To Become The Best Runners On The Planet

Running may feel like a mammoth task for most of us. But did you know our species have evolved to run better than any animal on this planet?

    --------------------------------------------------

Following is a transcript of the video:

Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world. But did you know that humans can leave them in the dust? At least, in the long run.

That’s right, when it comes to endurance, we can outrun wolves, cheetahs, and even horses.

Now, in the beginning, humans fall short because we're lousy sprinters.

Case in point, Usain Bolt couldn't outrun a cheetah in the 100-meter dash if he wanted to, and he tried. But marathons and ultramarathons are a whole other ballgame.

Each year, a small town in Wales holds the Man Versus Horse Marathon. It’s a 22-mile race between riders on horseback and runners. And, while horses often win, humans will sometimes prevail.

So what makes humans such endurance running superstars?

The secret weapon is our sweat. We have 2-4 million sweat glands all over our body, which means we can run and cool ourselves at the same time. Having no fur is also a huge plus.

In contrast, dogs rely on panting to cool down, and other animals, like horses and camels, also sweat, but less effectively. As a result, they overheat faster and must slow down sooner.

The mechanics of our running stride also makes us particularly well-suited for endurance running. A human’s running gait has two main phases: Aerial when both feet are off the ground and Stance when at least one foot touches the ground.

While in the air, gravity pulls us down, which generates a lot of kinetic energy. However, the second we hit the ground, we instantly decelerate, losing that kinetic energy in the process.

Here’s where our special adaptations come in. The tendons and muscles in our legs are very springy. They act like a pogo stick, converting kinetic energy from the aerial phase into elastic potential energy, which we can use later.

In fact, our IT band can store 15-20 times more elastic energy than a chimpanzee’s similar body part, the fascia lata. When it comes time to step off, those springy tendons can turn 50% of that elastic pogo-stick energy back into kinetic, making it easier to propel forward. Without that extra energy, we’d have to exert that much more effort just to take a step.

So, why did humans get to be such great endurance runners, anyway?

Some anthropologists believe this became important around 2-3 million years ago, when we started hunting and scavenging. Because we couldn’t chase down a gazelle like a cheetah, early humans learned persistence hunting. Where they would track prey over long distances until the prey either overheated or was driven into a trap.

In fact, persistence hunting remained in use until 2014, such as with the San people of the Kalahari Desert.

But distance running can still help you, even if you're not interested in running down your next meal.

Studies show running can lower body weight, body fat, and cholesterol levels. And the longer you train, the greater the health benefits. Just one year of training has been shown to reduce body weight by about 7 lbs, lower body fat by 2.7% and decrease resting heart rate by 2.7%.

It may seem really hard, and maybe even impossible to run a mile or a marathon. But in fact, you were born to go on that run. We all were.

  • Brazil: How humans are destroying paradise | DW Documentary

    28:22

Sea turtles return to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. But in Brazil, there isn't always a beach for them to return to. Human developments on the coast are depriving turtles of their habitat. Numbers of sea cows are also dwindling.

With the advent of hotels, beach promenades, and the rise of big cities with their noise and light pollution, sea turtles are finding themselves with fewer and fewer options. Their numbers are dwindling. Wildlife preservation projects like TAMAR are fighting to protect plants and animals in the area. But animals and their habitat are under threat because of humans and their way of living along Brazil’s entire coastline.

We begin our journey in northern Brazil, directly below the Equator. Oil was washed south from here onto the shore over a year ago. The oil came from a tank or rigs off the coast. Because the government failed to respond quickly enough, it affected fishing villages along thousands of kilometers of coast. People from the villages had to do what they could themselves. But for months, the fishers were unable to sell any fish. We visit these people to see how they are faring now. They live in the same area where the staff of the animal welfare project Cetáceos is trying to protect sea cows. These creatures are also at threat because of human attempts to subjugate nature to its own will. Brazil’s beaches, reefs, mangroves and forests are breathtakingly beautiful. But even Brazil’s beauty can’t mask that an entire habitat is in danger of disappearing.

  • Why are humans so different from other animals?

    6:39

Why do humans drive cars and not chimpanzees? What explanations can be found in our prehistory? Magnus Enquist, Stockholm University, investigates what happened when the human and chimpanzee development line parted about 5.5 million years ago. One explanation is the human ability to do things in several steps and the ability to transfer accumulated knowledge from generation to generation. The long childhood and culture of humans are other reasons. To play and learn for a long time favors knowledge development.
