  • How Deep Can You Possibly Dig?

    11:01

Do you remember that absolutely divine feeling you had as a child when you were digging in wet sand at the beach? Deeper and deeper... Have you ever wondered where you would have ended up if you’d kept digging without stopping? Great news! Even if you never managed to find out how far down your little tunnel could go, this video will tell you!

    TIMESTAMPS:
What you'll find at a depth of 2.3 ft 0:58
At what depth we come across the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun 1:54
How long are roots of tropical forest plants 2:22
What did the Mole Man do 2:32

    Music:

    SUMMARY:
    - At a depth of 2.3 ft, you'll find numerous mole tunnels and rabbit warrens. By the way, a mole can dig a tunnel longer than 65 ft in just one day!
    - Deep-burrowing species of earthworms can be spotted at a depth of 10 ft. One of them, Drawida grandis, can grow up to 3.5 ft long.
    - You can still find the roots of tropical forest plants if you dig 23 ft down. Tropical trees need such long roots to store water during dry periods.
    - When we arrive at a depth of 60 ft, we can see Beijing's Underground City. That's a subterranean bomb shelter consisting of a vast network of tunnels and underground rooms. It’s situated under the capital of China.
    - In Cappadocia, Turkey, there's an underground complex that probably dates back to the 7th century. Its name is Derinkuyu Underground City, and it's situated almost 280 ft below Earth’s surface.
    - The Channel Tunnel, connecting the UK with France, is situated at a depth of 377 ft.
    - The deepest railway tunnel is located at a depth of 787 ft. That's the maximum depth of the Seikan Tunnel in Japan that opened in 1988.
    - Even if we could get down to 1,001 ft, we’d still be in the danger zone for a B82 Earth-penetrating nuclear warhead. That's its maximum destructive depth.
    - At a depth of 3,800 ft, there's the deepest bat colony in the world. About 1,000 brown bats spend every winter in a zinc mine in New York.
    - About 5,920 ft down and we arrive at the deepest part of the 227-mile-long Grand Canyon. Its average depth is 5,282 ft.
    - The average depth of the oceanic crust is almost 20,000 ft. This is also the depth of the deepest known microbes. They were found in rocks below China's Songliao Basin.
-The winner in the category of the deepest artificial hole on Earth is Z44-Chayvo Oil and Gas Well. This shaft is drilled down to a whopping 40,604 ft! That's 15 Burj Khalifas put on top of each other. The shaft is located in the Russian Far East.

In the year 1970, Soviet scientists began one of the greatest and most ambitious drilling and mining experiments in human history. In the Kola Peninsula, a drilling project started which would go on to reach farther down into the Earth’s crust than any other in history, setting a Guinness World record that still stands today.

Even now, over twenty years since the cessation of all drilling activities at the borehole, which has since been welded shut, it’s remembered as a grand science project which brought about great scientific discoveries, as well as rumors, myths and legends of the type that wouldn’t be out of place in a modern horror movie.

  • What Would a Journey to the Earth’s Core Be Like?

    9:57

What’s the most exotic destination you’ve been to? Hawaii? Australia, Hoboken, New Jersey? Well, today I’m setting off on a journey that’s way more unusual than that – down to the Earth’s core. And I’m inviting you to join me. It’ll be fun! The center of the Earth lies about 4,000 miles below its surface, so it’s gonna be a looong trip.

???? By the way, guys, be attentive! To make the journey even more fascinating, I've hidden something interesting in this video. Okay, I'll give you a hint - it's movie references! You definitely saw them because each of those films is iconic. Try to find them all and let everyone know you have a sharp eye in the comments! If you're a video game fan, there's a reference for you too. But this one is really difficult.

???? And, of course, there is a cat hidden in this video. Can you spot it? C'mon, prove you're much more attentive than most people! Do you accept the challenge? ????

    SUMMARY:
    - The crust isn't really that thick. It’s roughly 21 miles thick and is made up of basaltic rocks that are under the sea, and granitic rocks that make up the continents.
    - Nile Crocodiles dig the deepest burrows among all animals, so you can find them at 39 feet under ground.
    - There are whole underground cities with shelters and catacombs in different countries. The deepest of them lies at 278 feet under Cappadocia in Turkey.
    - Continental crust is about 2 billion years old and it covers about 40 percent of the Earth (yeah, the rest is oceanic crust).
    - In 2004, a half-marathon was organized in the Bochnia Salt Mine in Poland. It was the deepest half-marathon ever – you don’t often see people running at a depth of 695 feet after all.
    - The Earth’s crust serves as an electric blanket that covers the mantle. It’s rich in the radioactive elements uranium, thorium, and potassium, which produce heat!
    - The oceanic crust is never too far, and its average depth is 4.3 miles. It covers around 60 percent of the surface of our planet, and is thinner, denser and younger than the continental crust.
    - The pressure is getting more and more extreme, and it’s getting colder and colder down here. This is the deepest point where earthquakes are born – the ones that come from here are rare, and get pretty weak by the time they’ve traveled 435 miles up to the surface.
    - At 1,814 miles deep, the mantle ends and the outer core begins. It’s a sunless sea of super hot liquid metal that’s about the size of Mars.
    - Once every several thousand years, something happens in this layer: the magnetic poles reverse, and north and south change places.
    - At 2,750 miles, the inner core welcomes you! It’s the hottest, innermost part of the planet.
    - The inner core is nearly the size of the Moon, and makes up 2 per cent of the Earth’s mass.
    - Not so long ago, British scientists found out that the inner core is relatively young – probably somewhere between 500 and 1,000 million years old, and that’s nothing in terms of Earth science.
    - Now, for those of you who are thinking of packing your bags to go see the Earth’s core, I have some not-so-good news: it’s technically not possible yet, because there’s no way to survive the pressure and extreme heat that are waiting down there.

  • Great Animation Shows How Deep Humans Dug Into The Earth

    2:54

Courtesy of Tech Insider --- Extreme Journey to the center of the Earth - Scientific drilling into the Earth is a way for scientists to probe the Earth's sediments, crust, and upper mantle. In addition to rock samples, drilling technology can unearth samples of connate fluids and of the subsurface biosphere, mostly microbial life, preserved in drilled samples. Most of the technology used for drilling come from advances in the oil and gas industry. Scientific drilling is carried out on land by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and at sea by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). Scientific drilling on the continents includes drilling down into solid ground as well as drilling from small boats on lakes. Sampling thick glaciers and ice sheets to obtain ice cores is related but will not be described further here.

Like probes sent into outer space, scientific drilling is a technology used to obtain samples from places that people cannot reach. Human beings have descended as deep as 2,080 m (6,822 ft) in Voronya Cave, the world's deepest known cave, located in the Caucasus mountains of the country of Georgia. Gold miners in South Africa regularly go deeper than 3,400 m, but no human has ever descended to greater depths than this below the Earth's solid surface. As depth increases into the Earth, temperature and pressure rise. Temperatures in the crust increase about 15°C per kilometer, making it impossible for humans to exist at depths greater than several kilometers, even if it was somehow possible to keep shafts open in spite of the tremendous pressure.

Scientific drilling is interdisciplinary and international in scope. Individual scientists cannot generally undertake scientific drilling projects alone. Teamwork between scientists, engineers, and administrators is often required for success in planning and in carrying out a drilling project, analyzing the samples, and interpreting and publishing the results in scientific journals.

Humans have reached the moon and are planning to return samples from Mars, but when it comes to exploring the land deep beneath our feet, we have only scratched the surface of our planet.
This may be about to change with a $1 billion mission to drill 6 km (3.7 miles) beneath the seafloor to reach the Earth's mantle -- a 3000 km-thick layer of slowly deforming rock between the crust and the core which makes up the majority of our planet -- and bring back the first ever fresh samples.
It could help answer some of our biggest questions about the origins and evolution of Earth itself, with almost all of the sea floor and continents that make up the Earth´s surface originating from the mantle.
Geologists involved in the project are already comparing it to the Apollo Moon missions in terms of the value of the samples it could yield.
However, in order to reach those samples, the team of international scientists must first find a way to grind their way through ultra-hard rocks with 10 km-long (6.2 miles) drill pipes -- a technical challenge that one of the project co-leaders Damon Teagle, from the UK's University of Southampton calls, the most challenging endeavor in the history of Earth science.
'A ship flying in space:' Earth seen through the eyes of an astronaut
Their task will be all the more difficult for being conducted out in the middle of the ocean. It is here that the Earth´s crust is at its thinnest at around 6 km compared to as much as 60 km (37.3 miles) on land.
Drilling all the way to the mantle would also give geologists a look at what they call the Mohorovičić discontinuity, or Moho, for short. Above this mysterious zone, named for the Croatian seismologist who discovered it in 1909, seismic waves travel at around 4.3 miles per second, a rate consistent with those waves traveling through basalt, or cooled lava. Below the Moho, the waves rip along at around 5 miles per second, similar to the rate they travel through a silica-poor type of igneous rock called peridotite. The Moho typically lies between 3 to 6 miles below the ocean floor and anywhere between 12 to 56 miles beneath the continents.

This zone has long been considered the crust-mantle boundary, where material gradually cools and sticks to the overlying crust. But some lab studies suggest it’s possible that the Moho represents the zone where water seeping down from the overlying crust reacts with mantle peridotites to create a type of mineral called serpentine. This possibility is exciting, Dick and MacLeod suggest. The geochemical reactions that generate serpentine also produce hydrogen, which can then react with seawater to produce methane, a source of energy for some types of bacteria. Or, the researchers note, the Moho could be something else entirely unknown to science.

  • This is How the Deepest Holes in the World look like

    11:29

This is a Nile crocodile. It can dig into the earth down to a depth of 39 feet. And this is a human being, who can dig the deepest hole in the world, all the way down to 7 miles below the Earth’s crust. Sure, that is impressive, but the distance between the Earth’s surface and the core is a whole 3958 miles. We might ask then what the deepest hole is that we can dig on our planet. Would it be possible to dig straight through the earth to the other side? And what would happen if we dug a hole hundreds of miles down to the Earth’s core – would hot magma under pressure surge forth and burn everything around it, or could we safely go down into this tunnel and explore the unknown? Today we’re going to find out.

  • Dropping an iPhone X Down 4000 FT Deep Hole! - Whats In There?

    5:08

So I dropped the new iPhone X down a 4000+ ft. deep mine hole and recorded it all to see what happens.

So here's how my experiment went down. The fishing line I bought was 1329 yards (3987 ft.) When the line ran out I was pretty disappointed thinking it's just dangling but the iPhone footage shows it seems to have hit something.

I assume the line just kept unraveling despite the phone landing, unless it just landed on a ledge or something and actually was 4000 feet deep? Hard to tell but after the initial 2-3 second drag delay, the iPhone was going down pretty fast and for like a good three minutes.

Sometimes we take a break from exploring things on the surface of the Earth to dig into its depths. When you were a child, you might have imagined being able to dig clear through the core of the Earth and pop out of the other side. Well, we hate to break it to you, but it doesn’t seem like it’s quite possible to do that just yet. So how deep can you actually dig into the Earth? We’ll learn about the different layers of the Earth and find out what progress has been made to get deeper into it. Let’s just say that there is a whole lot we can learn from these holes that take no shortage of time to create. Scientists must deal with seismic activity, blisteringly hot temperatures, and unexpected surprises as they try to continually dig deeper for answers.

How low can you go? Well, as it turns out, so far, humans have been able to go pretty low when it comes to digging holes. As kids, we spent a great deal of time digging small holes at the beach. Now that we’re all grown up, we use heavy machinery to dig and drill some impressively deep holes. Yet, what are the odds of us getting to the center of the Earth? Could we dig down to where the Crab people live? Just how deep can we possibly dig? We’ll tackle these questions and fill you in all all of humanities digging progress in this latest release from TheRichest.
