    11:10

Everyone seems to be leaving California in 2020. Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, Ben Shapiro, and Graham Stephen have all packed their bags and chosen to move out of California to other states like Texas and Nevada. So why exactly is everyone leaving California? In this video, we will uncover the reasons including taxes, housing costs, wildfires, and the homelessness problem that are driving people out of the state. Last year over half a million people left the Golden State to find a better quality of living. The question becomes will this trend continue, and if so, what does it mean for the future of California?

  • Why is EVERYONE Leaving CALIFORNIA?

    13:54

California sucks now. Here's where everyone's going and why.

It used to be the California Dream. Now, it's the California nightmare. That was basic.
In case you haven’t heard, a TON of people are fleeing California. You can’t blame them. We’ll get into all the reasons why later, but the overall theme here is - California kinda sucks now.
A total of 691,321 people moved from California to another state last year. That’s more than the whole state of Wyoming - every single year!

And that was more than the previous year. It’s like a damn breaking and all the California people are spilling out all over the place.

Sure, there are a lot of people moving here, too. About a half million people decided to move to California last year, for whatever reason I don’t know. Maybe cause it’s warmer? Or for a job maybe.

Anyways, the negative migration was the 9th year in a row for California. There are only a handful of other states that can claim that.

Californians are moving to places like Texas, Florida, Oregon, Washington, Colorado and even New York!

  • Heres a look at how bad the homeless problem in Los Angeles has become

    12:11

The worst homeless region in downtown Los Angeles.

In this video, I’m going to head into downtown Los Angeles to get a glimpse of the exploding homeless problem that’s taking over California’s largest city. Due to political decisions, the number of homeless people has grown tremendously, and I had not witnessed it. With downtown LA still two miles in the background, I got a preview of the mess I would see when I arrived into the hub of the mess. The sides of the roads were strewn with trash, mattresses and likely, even feces. The day was Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at high noon.

Just on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles are open air markets, many of them catering to the hispanic population. You can buy everything from pinatas to knock off blankets and t shirts to produce in these markets. There were also many open air, and possibly unauthorized food stands on both sides of the road. Odds are the tacos are tremendous, although, potentially dangerous due to probable health code violations.

It may seem like the homeless issue in many cities in the US has grown by quite a bit, but that’s only in major cities. Overall, the number of homeless people in our nation has ticked down - by about 14% in the last ten years.

However, in Los Angeles, it’s risen by 75% in the last six years, and now, there are an estimated 36,000 homeless people here. Part of that is because of the warm weather. Part of that is California politicians pandering to the homeless. Of course, drugs and addictions are a big part of it. And for many homeless in California, it’s a lifestyle.

Many also blame the LA homeless problem on the high cost of living, though most of those pushed out of their homes live in their vehicles or in motel rooms

Los Angeles ranks 4th in the world for its homeless population. Mumbai, India has 60,000 people, and Manilla in the Philippines has 70,000.

All of the areas I’m going to drive through are all in downtown proper, and are just a small example of the homeless encampments that exist not only in downtown proper, but in this city and county.

Many of the homeless were inside their tents or tarps. You could hear faint yelling and arguing going on behind their thin walls. Some wandered aimlessly. Others pushed shopping carts or baby strollers around with trash or recyclables inside. Some just laid down on the sidewalks without even a blanket. Others laid in the gutters as if they didn’t have any dignity or hope.

As I drove through the homeless areas, many people yelled at me for filming them. Some would get upset for being on camera, and then straight away, forget what they were upset about. Many wonder the streets. You can smell feces in the air. You can hear propane heaters running on every block, behind the large tarps that look like they are there permanently.

Los Angeles, like the rest of the west coast, has a big problem on its hands. While some people are temporarily homeless due to a life changing event, for the people on the streets of big cities like this, it’s a chronic issue. Its a very complicated problem. And with that comes a very complicated solution.

  • Why So Many People Are Leaving California for Other States

    1:48

The state lost an estimated 653,000 residents last year alone, as many Californians head to Texas, Arizona, Washington, Nevada and Oregon. There are many reasons Juliana and Jack Fitzpatrick have packed up their family’s life in Los Angeles, California to move to Arizona. They’re getting more square footage, a more suburban environment, and more opportunities for their daughter, all for the same income, the couple told Inside Edition. Celebrities are also leaving California at a new pace.

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he has moved to Texas

    1:16

Phil LeBeau joins 'Closing Bell' to report Tesla CEO Elon Musk has moved to Texas. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO:

Elon Musk said Tuesday that while SpaceX and Tesla maintain major operations in California today, he has personally moved to Texas.

“If a team has been winning for too long, they do tend to get a little complacent, a little entitled and then they don’t win the championship anymore. California has been winning for too long,” Musk said at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council summit, repeating an analogy he has used many times before to express his displeasure with California’s regulatory environment.

Musk, who has clashed with regulators in Fremont, California this year, and in Brandenburg, Germany this week, said he views government as “monopoly that cannot go bankrupt.” He also said, “regulations are immortal” and that government should think more about removing them not just making new rules.

Like Musk, Trump promoted the idea of reducing regulation with an executive order in 2017 he signed in 2017 directing federal agencies to repeal two existing regulations for every new one they put in place.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said what government should do for business is “just get out of the way.”

Asked directly if he had moved away from California, Musk gave a long preface to his answer.

“First of all, Tesla and SpaceX obviously have massive operations in California. In fact, it’s worth noting that Tesla is the last car company still manufacturing cars in California. SpaceX is the last aerospace company still doing significant manufacturing in California,” he said. “So. There used to be over a dozen car plants in California. And California used to be the center of aerospace manufacturing! My companies are the last two left...That’s a very important point to make.”

Then he confirmed, “For myself, yes I have moved to Texas.”

Musk also remarked that while California is great in some ways, he thinks that Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area have “outsized influence in the world,” that will likely be reduced as a result of the pandemic, which has driven some investors and executives out of the state, and forced companies to figure out how to manage a remote workforce.

However, Musk noted, “Social media is still very much centered in Silicon Valley. We need to be concerned about mind viruses. You know, just memes that travel very quickly through social media that may or may not be correct.” He qualified that with a nod to free speech, saying, “We want to encourage a healthy dialogue. If there’s someone out there who wants to shut down one side of a debate or the other we should resist that.”

CNBC reported last week that Musk told friends he intended to relocate to Texas and was already spending time there.

Musk, the world’s second-wealthiest person behind Amazon’s Jeff Bezos spends most of his time in Texas between Austin, where Tesla and his tunnel start-up Boring Company have operations, and a coastal village called Boca Chica, home to a SpaceX facility. SpaceX started operating in Texas in 2003.

The move makes Musk part of a broader tech exodus from Silicon Valley, with many executives and venture capitalists moving to Texas. It could also save Musk billions of dollars in taxes. The CEO’s pay package, approved by Tesla’s board and shareholders in 2018, means he’s getting significant stock awards based on Tesla’s market cap increases and hitting financial targets.

Forbes did a nice article on the topic which you can find here:

This is crazy for so many reasons. I have flipped houses in California before and I was very surprised to learn they wanted me to pay state income tax right then and there at closing. I had never seen that in any other state.

They want to tax the ultra wealthy .4% based on their net worth. I have no idea how they are going to calculate net worth with these people. It’s no wonder Elon Musk wants to leave and move Tesla to Austin, TX. But even if he moves, they will still go after him for those taxes! The world is crazy.

  • Why Companies Are Leaving California For Texas

    6:41

For as long as anybody can remember California has ranked among the most desirable places to live on earth. Its majestic redwood forests, world-class education system, sandy beaches, beautiful people and global food scene have cemented its status as a proven mecca for big money and talent.

But all that seems to be changing. An exodus of tech firms has recently decided to up sticks from the Golden State and make their homes in a very different corner of the United States. So today we’re looking into the burning question – why are companies moving from California to Texas?

Last year, according to data from the US census bureau, 653,000 people decided they’d had enough of California’s glossy charms and opted to set up home elsewhere. The most popular destination for these relocaters? Texas.

  • WHY ARE PEOPLE LEAVING CALIFORNIA? | Top 5 Reasons Why Everyone Is Leaving California

    7:05

The California Exodus. It's a thing. These days, it seems, everyone is leaving California. From Joe Rogan to Ben Shapiro to YouTubers like Graham Stephan, people are leaving California in droves. Yes, people are leaving California and they're doing so for a variety of reasons. It's important to keep in mind that California is not the Number 1 state in America for Net Domestic OUT Migration, meaning it's the state that has the most amount of people leaving from, it's the state that has the most people fleeting from. People are leaving California for greener pastures like Nevada, Colorado, Texas and Florida. It wasn't always like this, however. The Golden State was indeed a destination for many Americans. Nowadays, the high cost of living, high taxes, an unbearable homelessness problem, a hostile business climate and the ability to now work from home has encouraged people to leave the state of California for good.

I had the pleasure of living in California, albeit very briefly, a few years ago. It's a great state but it has its drawbacks as well. In this video, I'll be discussing the top 5 Reasons Why Everyone Is Leaving California. It's a video that I, as well as others, has made with a heavy heart. California became the most populous state in the country because it was such an attractive place to live in. Not anymore. Goodbye California.

  • How is Californias Mass Exodus Impacting Utah?

    27:07

The LA Times, Wall Street Journal and all major networks are reporting on how the mass exodus from California is intensifying. In Utah we are beginning to feel the tsunami of Californians flooding into our state. This is reflected in our sky-rocketing real estate prices.

Soaring home prices, a massive growing tech sector and a growing homeless population are all becoming realities in Utah. This all sounds very familiar to the conditions that already exist in California and Washington's tech areas. Will Utah repeat the same mistakes?

In this in-depth analysis we examine how and why California is suffering from an ever-increasing homeless population which is driving the middle-class and working poor away from LA Counties. It appears the problem will only intensify before it gets better. In Utah we need to realize that former CA residents will be coming here in ever-increasing numbers. How do we best handle all of this growth?

This is California, the Golden State and one of the largest economies in the world in its own right.

If California was counted as a sovereign nation it would be the fifth-largest in the world by GDP, with a 3.2 trillion dollar gross state product putting it just behind Germany and just ahead of India.

The state has a lot going for it, from the largest movie and technology centers in the world all the way to a surprisingly strong agricultural sector.

All of this has meant that the residents of California are on average doing very well for themselves, and one look around the wealthy enclaves of las Angeles and san Francisco would back this up.

Despite all of this however, the state is going through a period of economic turbulence.

The economic fallout of the coronavirus has hit the state’s economy particularly hard.

Major industries like tourism and media creation have ground to a complete halt having widespread knock-on implications throughout the economy hitting smaller vendors who were once reliant on these industries.

This bump in the road however was by no means the total undoing of the state.

California’s metrics before 2020 looked very strong, with low unemployment, solid growth, and booming industries, but there were still cracks forming.

The state is home to the largest population in the US but the industries that were truly driving wealth creation are famously bad at actually employing people.

This had led to a sharp increase in social issues like homelessness and crime.

All of these problems that were bubbling away under the surface have now been massively accelerated, so much so that many economists have predicted that the sun might be setting on the setting on the sunshine state.

It may sound like absurdist alarmism but it is a reality that shouldn’t be dismissed.

Remember in previous decades there was another economic region in the US riding high on the new growth industry of the age. but these days Detroit is not exactly seen as the bastion of prosperity it once was.

So could the same grim reality be in store for California? Well to answer this we need to look at a few key areas.

What made the state so prosperous before the 2020 downturn?

What were the underlying issues impacting the economy?

How will these issues be impacted by this decline?

  • California Exodus: Are some people fed up with the Golden State?

    2:56

FRESNO, California - Californians are leaving the state in droves, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In 2017, more residents left california than moved in.

In the “Golden State” – some say you can't beat the sun, the beaches, the mountains – and how about that wine country.

“We love going to Napa. That was our favorite escape; we would do it three, four – five times a year,” said Phil Bourekas, a former California resident.

Phil and Berni Bourekas lived in California nearly all their lives. The former San Jose residents want to retire soon. The question was where?

“It just made a lot of sense to move out of state because we would have to work several more years if we were to stay and retire in California,” Berni said.

The couple have decided to call Las Vegas their new home. They've been there almost a year – where they say things are cheaper.

“Nevada has no state income tax which is a pretty significant difference from California,” Phil said.

Mike Powell is the sales operations manager of Courtesy Moving and Storage in Fresno.

“Out of 100 moves, we are probably showing about 30 percent moving out of California,” Powell said.

Powell says his clients are calling it quits in the Central Valley – opting instead for Idaho, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada.

“People are tired of the regulations; they're tired of California government,” Powell said. “People are definitely complaining about the cost of living here in the state of California.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 522,000 people moved into California last year, but more than 650,000 left.

A real estate broker in Las Vegas says the market is booming in “Sin City” for both renters and buyers.

“I'm excited; I'm happy; I'm also worried at the same time that one day Las Vegas will be similar to California – prices and demands and traffic, said Kami Zargari, a broker with Triumph Property Management.

Powell says he noticed an uptick on out-of-state moving about four years ago with no signs of slowing down. He says it's doing wonders for business.

Powell, “I did an estimate this morning for a couple that in fact is moving up into northern Idaho and they are looking at around $12,000.

The Bourekas' say they miss California and all the beauty and perks that come with it, but they're not looking back on what it cost them to live in the “Golden State.”

Berni said, “The increased crime, due to loosening of California crime laws; the increased taxation – we just went along with it; we just paid it.”

I’m a full-time Realtor® in the San Francisco East Bay in California. I'm a proud wife and mother, constant learner and daily ice cream eater! My husband and I are foodies and we have two great kids who make me look like the shrimp of the family. ????

I am a Certified as a Seniors Real Estate Specialist, and a First Time Buyer Specialist, e-Pro Real Estate Digital Marketer Certified, and Certified Distressed Property Specialist. Basically, I have a bunch of certifications to say that I love to help both buyers and sellers....and I'm a nerdy person who loves to learn!

I can help with anything you need to know about Real Estate from the San Francisco East Bay. I specialize in Hayward, California and surrounding communities, but my team can help anywhere in the Bay Area. My goal is always to have you work with a specialist in the area that you want to buy or sell in. No one can know and serve all areas....and if they say they can, they are stretching the truth...or they don't sleep so that they can study the real estate market 24/7. I have access to show in all of these areas, but I don't, JUST because I can. It would be a disservice to my clients. I want to give great customer service and I can't if I am driving all over the state to show homes.

I have specialists in the Tri-Cities (Fremont, Newark, Union City), Tri-Valley (Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore), North Bay (Marin County), North East Bay (Oakland and Bizerkley...I mean Berkeley!) , South Bay, the Penninsula and San Francisco....which has specialists in each district as they are so vast and varied. You can't just say San Francisco and mean San Francisco!

If you need help in other areas outside of the Bay Area...in other parts of CA (I have videos on those too!), I know Realtors across the country and can get you someone to fit your needs to help you there. I am a networker and know agents across the United States. Really, its my excuse to travel. It always is real estate related!

  • Seattle Police on Pace to Lose Nearly 200 Officers in Mass Exodus This Year | Seattle RE Podcast

    25:31

By the end of November, the official number of separations was 164. Since then, more officers have offered their resignations to take jobs at neighboring agencies. Put bluntly, the city does not have enough officers to keep the area safe.

As of this publication date, sources tell me the SPD actually has 191 separations — an all-inclusive term covering resignations, retirements, and firings. The president of the Seattle police union ominously warns “these numbers are only just the tip of the iceberg.” Officially, the city will only acknowledge the November data (with the note that more have left in December).

  • Why millionaires are flocking to Florida from New York

    3:13

CNBC's Robert Frank reports on what tax incentives are driving millionaires out of New York and into Florida.

Blame it on brutal winters, high taxes or the New Jersey Turnpike: The Garden State is the last place where people want to be.

More than two-thirds of all New Jersey moves were outbound in 2019, according to an analysis from United Van Lines.

About a third of people leaving the state cited retirement as a primary reason for relocating, the moving service found.

United Van Lines analyzed 182,186 shipments last year through Dec. 18. New Jersey had a total of 4,059 shipments, of which 2,779 were sent out of state.

This is the second year in a row that the Garden State led the country in the percentage of departures.

“The economics in that state are a little bit uncertain, so we see people leaving,” said Eily Cummings, director of corporate communications at United Van Lines.

Illinois and New York round out the top three states experiencing the highest percentage of outbound traffic, United Van Lines found.

Leaving New Jersey can make good financial sense for some people, particularly if they’re thinking of retirement.

More than 230,000 residents left the state in 2018, according to Census data.

Consider that the Garden State has an effective property tax rate of 2.13%, and state and local property tax collections per capita are $3,127, according to the Tax Foundation.

That’s the top property tax rate and the per-capita property tax collection in the nation.

Taxes on individual income are also among the highest in the country: New Jersey has a top rate of 10.75%, according to the Tax Foundation.

It’s now harder to get a write-off on your federal return for these state and local levies, too.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act roughly doubled the standard deduction, such that it’s now $12,400 for singles and $24,800 for married couples filing jointly.

This means taxpayers are more likely to claim the standard deduction, instead of taking itemized deductions on federal returns.

Even those who itemize are less likely to claim steep state and local taxes, or SALT, they paid throughout the year. The tax overhaul capped so-called SALT deductions at $10,000.

Retirement-minded movers are heading for points west and south, United Van Lines found.

Idaho was the most popular destination in 2019, the company found. Nearly two-thirds of all moves in the Gem State were inbound, and more than a third of households coming in cited retirement as a primary reason.

Indeed, Idaho doesn’t tax Social Security income. It also has no estate taxes.

Meanwhile, Florida was the top destination for movers weighing retirement. Four out of 10 people who moved there cited their golden years as a chief driver of their decision, the mover found.

The Sunshine State boasts 0% tax rates on individual income, making it an attractive destination for retirees hoping to hold onto more of their money. It also has no estate or inheritance tax.
