  • How Apple DESTROYS Lightning

    19:13

Could Apple end both Lightning and USB-C?
???? SURPRISE SALE! CuriosityStream + Nebula for less than $12 a YEAR!

$1000 and the iPhone 13 Pro is still stuck at USB2 speeds. Never mind the $1100 iPhone 13 Pro Max. Why? Because, *Lightning*, and — wait for it — Lightning has pretty much been stuck at USB2’s half a gigabit per second, since… 2012. That, in spite of Apple adding 10-bit ProRes HDR video recording back in September. With hardware acceleration fast enough to encode 6GB a minute — a minute! — and a new storage system fast enough to save it, but no… no as in nothing approaching… a new I/O system fast enough to transfer it. So, you can now record the highest quality video of any phone on the planet, you just can’t get it off any faster than the cheapest phone on the block.

So, what do you do? I mean, besides hitting the button and cursing in the comments, obviously. Well, if you’re Apple… If you’re Apple, maybe you kill the now 10 year old Lightning connector. Summary de-resolution it just to get it off the grid. And then you replace it… maybe with Lightning 2… Maybe with USB-C or even Thunderbolt… Or maybe, just maybe, something that could take the iPhone and us forward into the next 10 years?

  • We Tried To Beat A Lie Detector Test

    3:53

You’ve probably seen this device before.  This is a “polygraph” -- which is more popularly known as a lie detector test. But just how often it can catch you in a lie is shrouded in controversy.

Regardless, thousands of polygraphs are given each year in the US, alone, for everything from government clearance screening to witness verification. And the power of these machine’s results is not taken lightly. People have reportedly lost their jobs and even reputations over a failed exam. But how exactly does this machine work, and is it really as accurate as polygraph examiners claim?

To find out, we decided to put the polygraphs to the test ourselves. Polygraph results haven’t been accepted in most state courts since 1923. Mainly because:

Francis Shen: “The scientific research suggests that the polygraph has significant scientific problems. That is, it may not give us the level of accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity that we think it will, and that could be problematic.”

Still, many defenders contest that even though the polygraph isn’t 100% accurate, neither is DNA testing or eye-witness testimonies.

Lisa Gentile: Do you intend to answer each question truthfully?

    Jessica Orwig: Yes.

Now what the examiner may, or may not know, is that I’ve already told my first lie.

Lisa Gentile: Have you used any illegal drugs in the last three years?

    Jessica Orwig: No.

Lisa Gentile: Did you ever commit a serious crime? Were you ever terminated from a job that you did not disclose? In your whole life did you ever do something you're ashamed of? In your whole life did you ever lose your temper? Are the lights on in this room?

Ok, the test is over. Let's see if she caught my lie.

Lisa Gentile: You're more relaxed, it goes down. Then when it begins here it goes back up again, so that's a lie.

So, yup, the polygraph caught me.

Now to be clear, this type of test is normally administered for a job interview, meaning the stakes are lower and the accuracy rate is lower. And it caught me anyway. But it’s hard to know if this is the case for your average person.

Even though I worked on controlling my breathing, what really got me was my increased heartbeat, perspiration, and blood pressure. So who knows what would have happened if I spent time learning how to maintain those things? And that uncertainty is pretty much why polygraphs aren't accepted in most states because it's known that people have and can beat the polygraph.

Francis Shen: “I’m of two minds about the polygraph. I have serious reservations about its use. But I can see that it might have some utility in some but not all contexts and I think we need to be pretty conservative and cautious about its use.”

  • Why The U.S. Has A Massive Lithium Supply Problem

    16:22

The United States has a lithium supply problem. Nearly every major automaker has announced a transition to electric vehicles, Tesla delivered almost one million cars in 2021, and electric vehicle companies like Rivian and Lucid are rolling new models off the line.

In order to power all of these EVs, we will need batteries, lots of them. Electric vehicle growth will be responsible for more than 90% of demand for lithium by 2030, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. But lithium is also in our phones, computers, ceramics, lubricants, pharmaceuticals, and is essential for solar and wind energy storage. This vital mineral in rechargeable batteries has earned the name “white gold” and the rush is on.

But today, the U.S. is far behind, with only 1% of global lithium being mined and processed in the U.S., according to the USGS. More than 80% of the world’s raw lithium is mined in Australia, Chile, and China. And China controls more than half of the world’s lithium processing and refining and has three fourths of the lithium-ion battery megafactories in the world, according to the International Energy Agency. There is only one operating lithium mine in the U.S., Albemarle’s Silver Peak, Nevada.

But that could be changing. Last June, the Biden administration released a blueprint for jumpstarting domestic lithium production and refining as well as battery manufacturing, and set a national EV sales goal of 50% by 2030.

And there are several domestic lithium projects in the works in Nevada, North Carolina, California and Arkansas, to name a few.

Controlled Thermal Resources is developing a lithium project at the Salton Sea in California. Last summer, GM announced a multi-million-dollar investment in Controlled Thermal Resources, and has secured first rights to purchase the domestically produced lithium for its EVs.

Piedmont Lithium wants to revive an old lithium mining area in North Carolina, near Charlotte. Piedmont signed a deal in 2020 to supply Tesla with lithium sourced from its deposits there, but the project has hit delays due to permitting.

Lithium Americas plans an open-pit mine at Thacker Pass, which is located about 200 miles north of Reno, Nevada, and is one of the largest lithium reserves in the U.S.

But no one wants a mine in their backyard, and Thacker Pass and other projects have been plagued with lawsuits and opposition from environmentalists, permitting delays and opposition from Native American tribes in the area.

Watch the video to learn more, and to get an inside look at some of the domestic lithium projects in the works.

  • Why renewables can’t save the planet | Michael Shellenberger | TEDxDanubia

    17:33

Environmentalists have long promoted renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind farms to save the climate. But what about when those technologies destroy the environment? In this provocative talk, Time Magazine “Hero of the Environment” and energy expert, Michael Shellenberger explains why solar and wind farms require so much land for mining and energy production, and an alternative path to saving both the climate and the natural environment. Michael Shellenberger is a Time Magazine Hero of the Environment and President of Environmental Progress, a research and policy organization. A lifelong environmentalist, Michael changed his mind about nuclear energy and has helped save enough nuclear reactors to prevent an increase in carbon emissions equivalent to adding more than 10 million cars to the road. He lives in Berkeley, California. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

  • Why Do Tech Companies LIE About This SH*T?! | A Complete Rant

    6:25

Tech companies like Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, etc., have a bad habit of over-selling (and falsely advertising) their products’ features. Like when a company advertises their TV as having 4k HDR, but neglects to tell you that out of the 4 HDMI ports, only one of them supports 4k HDR. You thought with that $2,000 TV you bought you were going to be able to hook up your AppleTV, Xbox Series X and PS5 and enjoy all of them in 4k HDR? No, no, no. Sorry. Choose one. And it’s not just with TVs, this happens ALL THE TIME with tech. Computers, sound systems, phones, gaming consoles, cars... You name it.

This kind of advertising has to stop. If companies want to be misleading in their commercials about the tech products to get customers in the door, that’s one thing. But at least be visibly honest on the box if nothing else.

  • How Companies Completely Lie

    11:10

    9 - Volkswagen TDI
What’s one easy way to charge more money to people concerned with the environment? Claim to make cars that have clean diesel! This is what Volkswagen did with models that had a TDI engine, which is basically a turbocharged diesel engine. Volkswagen charged people more for cars that supposedly had clean diesel.

    8 - Skechers Shape-Ups
Skechers made claims that their goofy looking shoes called “Shape-ups” were a great way to get in shape. Somehow the bottom of the shoes was able to help tone muscles and burn calories. Well, don’t all shoes do that? The way they made their claims in their advertisements made people think that Shape-up shoes would help people burn MORE calories walking than with a regular shoe.

    7 - Eclipse Gum
Wrigley made the claim that Eclipse Gum contained a natural ingredient that killed the germs that cause bad breath. The Eclipse advertising campaign ran off the claim that most other gums just mask bad breath, while theirs killed it! Nope, their gum didn’t do that at all!

    6 - Lifelock
LifeLock is an identity theft protection company that promised to protect your identity. In order to prove how well Lifelock worked, they had commercials publicizing their CEO’s own social security number! Do you remember these ads that were seen everywhere from park benches to billboards to TV commercials?!

    5 - Kashi Cereal
All natural? What Kashi cereal really meant was NOT at all natural! Kellogg, the maker of Kashi, was ordered to stop using the words All Natural or Nothing Artificial labels on certain Kashi products. They did it as part of an agreement to settle in a 5 million dollar class-action lawsuit over its “all natural” claims!

    4 - Vibram Fivefingers
Remember when it seemed like so many people wore these barefoot shoes? Vibram deceived consumers by advertising that their fivefingers footwear could reduce foot injuries and strengthen foot muscles. Vibram never conducted any sort of studies. They just decided to make the claims anyways! A class-action lawsuit was filed against Vibram.

    3 - Apple iPhone 3G
Remember the time when Apple claimed that the iPhone 3G was twice as fast and half the price as the original iPhone? NEITHER of those claims were true! The iPhone 3G wasn’t half the price nor twice as fast as the original iPhone. So William Gillis decided to sue Apple for their false claims.

    2 - Subway Footlong
The $5 dollar footlong was a promotion that just made sense. 5 bucks for a sub that’s a footlong? It doesn’t get much cheaper than that for lunch! The problem was, the sub wasn’t actually a foot long. Subway’s subs consistently measured up short! This legendary promotion with the jingle was the brainchild of clever Subway franchise owner, Stuart Frankel.

1 - Made in the USA
Where something is made seems like it’s always going to be a tricky loophole. Americans in general DO want products made in the USA. The big problem? They still want it to be the same price. So companies are in a catch-22. And some just…..lie. For example, Nectar Sleep is a company founded by entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. They promoted their beds as designed and assembled in the USA. Their bed was found to be made entirely in China!

  • How Companies Lie to You: Corporate Tax Dodging and the Myth of Job Creation

    56:51

An IRS report indicates that, in 2009, 1,470 individuals earning more than $1,000,000 annually faced a net tax liability of zero or less. Also, in 1998 alone, a total of 94 corporations faced a net liability of less than half the full 35% corporate tax rate and the corporations Lyondell Chemical, Texaco, Chevron, CSX, Tosco, PepsiCo, Owens & Minor, Pfizer, JP Morgan, Saks, Goodyear, Ryder, Enron, Colgate-Palmolive, Worldcom, Eaton, Weyerhaeuser, General Motors, El Paso Energy, Westpoint Stevens, MedPartners, Phillips Petroleum, McKesson and Northrup Grumman all had net negative tax liabilities.[49] Additionally, this phenomenon was widely documented regarding General Electric in early 2011.[50]

Furthermore, a Government Accountability Office study found that, from 1998 to 2005, 55 percent of United States companies paid no federal income taxes during at least one year in a seven-year period it studied.[51][52] A review in 2011 by Citizens for Tax Justice and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy of companies in the Fortune 500 profitable every year from 2008 through 2010 stated these companies paid an average tax rate of 18.5% and that 30 of these companies actually had a negative income tax due.[53]

In 2012, Hewlett-Packard lost a lawsuit with the IRS over a foreign tax credit generator which was engineered by a division of AIG.[54] Al Jazeera also wrote in 2012 that Rich individuals and their families have as much as $32 trillion of hidden financial assets in offshore tax havens, representing up to $280bn in lost income tax revenues ... John Christensen of the Tax Justice Network told Al Jazeera that he was shocked by 'the sheer scale of the figures'. ... 'We're talking about very big, well-known brands – HSBC, Citigroup, Bank of America, UBS, Credit Suisse ... and they do it knowing fully well that their clients, more often than not, are evading and avoiding taxes.' Much of this activity, Christensen added, was illegal.[55]

As a result of the tax sheltering, the government responded with Treasury in Treasury Department Circular 230. In 2010, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 codified the economic substance rule of Gregory v. Helvering (1935).[56]

The US Public Interest Research Group said in 2014 that the United States loses roughly $184 billion per year due to corporations such as Pfizer, Microsoft and Citigroup using offshore tax havens to avoid paying US taxes. According to PIRG:

    Pfizer paid no US income taxes 2010–2012, despite earning $43 billion. The corporation received more than $2 billion in federal tax refunds. In 2013, Pfizer operated 128 subsidiaries in tax havens and had $69 billion offshore which could not be collected by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS);
    Microsoft maintains five tax haven subsidiaries and held $76.4 billion overseas in 2013, thus saving the corporation $24.4 billion in taxes;
Citigroup maintained 21 subsidiaries in tax haven countries in 2013, and kept $43.8 billion in offshore jurisdictions, thus saving the corporation an additional $11.7 billion in taxes.

  • Big Step Forward in Lie Detection Technology

    1:18

EyeDetect®, by Converus® ( is an accurate, nonintrusive lie detection test that detects deception in 30 minutes by analyzing eye behavior. It’s the first breakthrough in effectively uncovering lies since the polygraph was invented nearly 100 years ago. EyeDetect is also the world’s first ocular-motor deception test.

If your job has anything to do with credibility assessment (whether you work in law enforcement, the government, human resources) or if you’re simply interested in lie detection, then please SUBSCRIBE to this YouTube channel.

In this video, a Sacramento TV news station examines this new technology.

How does it work? EyeDetect uses a high-definition, infrared eye-tracking camera to monitor involuntary eye behavior — including pupil dilation, blink rate and fixations — to detect deception while a person answers true/false questions on a computer screen. The test takes 30 minutes and provides a “truthful” or “deceptive” score within 5 minutes. Polygraph exams, the long-time standard for lie detection, require a trained examiner, take at least 90 minutes to conduct, and reports can sometimes take hours to receive.

Field tests show EyeDetect is 86% accurate. When used in conjunction with the polygraph, and when both tests have the same result, the confidence in the test outcome can be as high as 99%. This is unheard of in the lie detection industry.

Most companies, in countries where it’s legal to administer lie detection tests in the workplace, use EyeDetect for pre-employment screening of job candidates and periodic testing of current employees. EyeDetect is not only ideal for screening job candidates in government, law enforcement and corrections, but also for screening visa applicants, immigrants, sex offenders, probationers and parolees. For example, an important potential national security application of EyeDetect is screening Syrian refugees for terrorists.

Companies and government agencies throughout Latin America have been using EyeDetect since late 2014. Converus recently began offering EyeDetect to the U.S. market.

The main benefits of EyeDetect include:

    • High accuracy
    • Fast (only 30 minutes for a test)
    • Nonintrusive
    • Cost-effective
    • Portable
    • Incorruptible and unbiased

After the concept was conceived in 2002, a team of five scientists from the University of Utah spent more than 13 years fine-tuning this new ocular-motor based lie detection technology. Two of the five scientists, Drs. David Raskin and John Kircher, are not only world-renowned polygraph experts, but also credited with inventing the computerized polygraph.

    About Converus®
Converus (“with truth”) is committed to providing trustworthy credibility assessment solutions. Its flagship product, EyeDetect® — a product first conceived in 2002 — is the first ocular-motor deception detection solution. It’s an accurate, cost-effective, efficient, secure and nonintrusive method that detects deception in 30 minutes by analyzing eye behavior. The same scientists credited with computerizing the polygraph in 1991 developed EyeDetect. It’s a new way for organizations to manage risk and ensure workplace integrity, and for law enforcement agencies and governments to detect deception. Ultimately, it helps protect countries, corporations and communities from corruption, fraud and threats. The company is headquartered in Lehi, Utah, USA. For more information, visit

  • Using EyeDetect Lie Detection Technology with Polygraph

    3:42

EyeDetect®, by Converus® ( is an accurate, nonintrusive lie detection test that detects deception in 30 minutes by analyzing eye and other behaviors.

In this video, hear what Don Krapohl has to say about EyeDetect. He's a former CIA polygraph examiner and deputy director at the U.S. National Center for Credibility Assessment (the government entity responsible for approving technology for government usage). Krapohl is currently the director for EyeDetect services for Capital Center for Credibility Assessment, a Virginia-based firm that provides credibility assessment services to the U.S. federal government. He's also a member of the Converus Advisory Board.

    • 100% unbiased
    • High accuracy
    • Fast (only 30 minutes for a test)
    • Nonintrusive
    • Cost-effective
    • Portable

After the concept was conceived in 2002, a team of five scientists from the University of Utah spent more than 13 years fine-tuning this new ocular-motor based lie detection technology. Two of the five scientists, Drs. David Raskin and John Kircher, are not only world-renowned polygraph experts, but also credited with inventing the computerized polygraph.
