    48:40

The real Scottish king Macbeth was a far cry from the great Shakespearean villain, but his story was even more fascinating, presenter Tony Robinson discovers in his continuing series which uncovers the myths behind legendary British heroes. The original and real King Macbeth lived in the 11th century and reigned from 1040 to 1057. He was not the vicious, jealous, superstitious murderer Shakespeare painted, but he took a path to the throne that was just as bloody, as The Real Macbeth reveals.

  • Was King Arthur Real?

    13:27

King Arthur - Fact or Fiction?

The new Guy Ritchie movie, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is yet another testament to the popularity and longevity of the Arthurian myth and legend. It never seems to go away, or leave the public consciousness.

But is there any truth to it? Did King Arthur exist at all?

This video covers a few popular theories that try to connect Arthur with more historical attested figures like, Riothamus, Lucius Artorius Castus and Artuir Mac Aedan.

But what's often neglected is his historical context - the anglo-saxon invasion or anglo-saxon migration, where Arthur leads the Britons in a defence against the invading Germanic horde. But is this even accurate?

What do you think? Let's continue the conversation in the comments below.

  • How The Anglo-Saxon Settlement Changed British Culture | King Arthurs Britain | Timeline

    48:35

In the last programme of the series Francis focuses his attention on the Anglo-Saxon invasion.

Sheep-farming archaeologist, Francis Pryor, presents a brand new historical series which explores Britain A.D, the British national character and the ultimate British icon King Arthur.

Finding new and previously unexplained evidence, Francis Pryor overturns the idea that Britain reverted to a state of anarchy and disorder after the Romans left in 410 AD. Instead of doom and gloom Francis discovers a continuous culture that assimilated influences from as far a field as the Middle East and Constantinople. Through scrutinising the myth of King Arthur to find out what was really going on when the Romans left, Francis is confronted by evidence that confounds traditional views of the 'Dark Ages'. There was also no invasion of bloodthirsty Anglo Saxons, rampaging across the countryside. With new archaeological evidence Francis discovers a far more interesting story.

After you watch this episode, check out the official commentary video on the Time Team Official YouTube Channel!

Harold's Field has long been rumoured as a site where Harold Godwinson, later to become King Harold, built a hunting lodge in 1065 after defeating the Welsh. The site is a scheduled monument, protected from excavation; but a local petition has succeeded in persuading Cadw to allow digging. So Time Team have been invited in to do their stuff. While Stewart believes there are signs of medieval occupation, any finds from an earlier, Saxon period would be a first for this area of Wales. The team are joined by historians Sam Newton and Jeremy Knight, local pottery expert Steve Clarke, and maritime archaeologist Nigel Nayling.

  • 6th January 1066: Coronation of Harold Godwinson as Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England

    2:27

Edward the Confessor died the previous day, having suffered a series of strokes in late 1065 that caused him to lie in a coma for much of the remainder of his life. Edward died without an heir, and this sparked a succession crisis that culminated in the Norman invasion of England later that year.

The Normans claimed that Edward had promised the throne of England to William of Normandy. This is reported by various Norman chroniclers, and the Bayeux Tapestry even shows Harold swearing an oath on sacred relics to support William’s claim to the English throne after he was shipwrecked in 1064. The reliability of the Tapestry’s account is debated by historians, especially since it goes against the English tradition that the new king would be chosen by the Witenaġemot – the ‘meeting of wise men’.

Whatever the truth of Edward’s promise and Harold’s meeting with William, Edward apparently regained consciousness and entrusted his kingdom to Harold for ‘protection’ shortly before he died. When the Witenaġemot met on 6 January they elected Harold to be the new king, and his coronation took place the same day. Historians generally believe that this took place in Westminster Abbey, which had been built by Edward and was consecrated just a few days earlier on 28 December 1065.

Hearing of Harold’s accession to the English throne, William of Normandy soon began preparing to invade. Harold reigned for barely nine months before being killed at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October by the Norman invaders.

This animated history documentary series will trace the life of Harald Hardrada. Episode 1 - Rise of a Viking Legend kicks things off by tracing how he would in the fortune and fame. We begin with a recap of the history of Norway and the state of the Great North Sea Empire. At the time of Harald Hardrada's birth in 1015 it had been shattered following the death of Svein Forkbeard and was now being fought over by various heirs. Among them was Olaf the Second, the half-brother of Harald Hardrada who took the throne of Norway. He would be challenged by Cnut the Great in the pivotal clash at the Battle of Stiklestad. Here a 15 year old Harald was said to have brought 500 men from his father's lands and actually taken up position in the battleline. However when Olaf was killed, the prince would be forced to flee into the forest and ultimately escape to Sweden. Here he regrouped with other survivors and turned east for a brighter future.

This move would lead a young Harald Hardrada on a series of adventures that would bring him great fame and fortune, eventually culminating in his service as a Varangian Guard to the Byzantines. But this service would come to a dramatic end when he took on an Emperor. Future episodes will deal with his rule of Norway and his attempt to take the seat of England at the Battle of Stamford Bridge against Harold Godwinson.

    3:52

Ron Perlman knows a few things about playing the villain. Sure, he’s played a few heroes over the years, but even then, they often fall into the range of anti-hero, like Hellboy. Clay Morrow, his character on FX’s Sons of Anarchy, is one of the most despicable characters Perlman has ever played, which is no surprise, seeing as how he’s based on one of Shakespeare’s most despicable villains. Many fans might have expected Clay to make it to the final episode, but he actually got bumped off in the sixth season. Let’s take a look at the real reason why Ron Perlman left Sons of Anarchy.

  • The Truth about Ashkenazi Jews | Unpacked

    5:24

About Explweek, we’re looking at a long-standing theory that claims that Ashkenazi Jews are descendants of the Khazars. If it were true, that would make Ashkenazim offshoots of a multi-ethnic conglomerate of Turkic people who converted en masse in the eighth century in the kingdom of Khazaria.

    Turns out, it’s totally false.

Unlike other conspiracy theories, though, it’s not just a fringe few who are pushing this idea. It has the backing of academics, including some in Israel - with dangerous implications.

The hypothesis has been disproved, so why does it continue to resonate and how did an attempt to use the theory to fight back against antisemitism in the 1970s end up fueling anti-Israel rhetoric to this day?

  • Harold Godwinson

    18:34

Harold II (or Harold Godwinson) (Old English: Harold Godƿinson; c. 1022 – 14 October 1066), was the last Anglo-Saxon King of England. Harold reigned from 6 January 1066 until his death at the Battle of Hastings on 14 October, fighting the Norman invaders led by William the Conqueror during the Norman conquest of England. His death marked the end of Anglo-Saxon rule over England.
Harold was a powerful earl and member of a prominent Anglo-Saxon family with ties to King Cnut. Upon the death of Edward the Confessor in January 1066, the Witenagemot convened and chose Harold to succeed; he was crowned in Westminster Abbey. In late September he successfully repulsed an invasion by rival claimant Harold Hardrada of Norway, before marching his army back south to meet William the Conqueror at Hastings some two weeks later.

  • William the Conqueror 07 -- King Harold

    28:35

William the Conqueror (FULL Audio Book)
    by Jacob Abbott 1803-1879

There are certain names which are familiar, as names, to all mankind; and every person who seeks for any degree of mental cultivation, feels desirous of informing himself of the leading outlines of their history, that he may know, in brief, what it was in their characters or their doings which has given them so widely-extended a fame. Consequently, great historical names alone are selected; and it has been the writer's aim to present the prominent and leading traits in their characters, and all the important events in their lives, in a bold and free manner, and yet in the plain and simple language which is so obviously required in works which aim at permanent and practical usefulness. This volume is dedicated to William the Conqueror. (Summary from the preface of the book)

  • The Tragedy of Harold Godwinson

    12:01

The Tragedy of Harold Godwinson opens with Ealdgyth Swan-Neck, first consort of Harold II in exile at the court of the Irish king where she has fled for protection with her children.

Ealdgyth recounts historical events leading up to Harold's death at the Battle of Hastings. Her main themes connect love with betrayal, a lover's love of life and right to love.

Commenting upon the motivations and actions of kings, she contrasts the love of a kingdom with purer marital love, (Ealdgyth and Harold were deemed to be 'mores danico', an informal marriage bond widely recognised in Saxon England).

Speculation over the legitimacy of Duke William's claim is central to how history regards the Battle of Hastings and the Norman ascendancy. Ealdgyth is highly critical of Harold's predecessor, Edward the Confessor. His vassilating personality, religiosity and foreign policy in her view, fatally weakened the kingship in temporal matters. She is scornful of the covert nomination in favour of William as heir to the English crown over time and by various indications. The Godwin household were strongly opposed to continental influence upon the issue of succession. According to tradition, the election was determined by the Witenagmot, making any prior pact unlawful. Ealdgyth maintains Harold was sent by Edward on an expedition to locate Edward the Atheling when he was held against his will by Duke William. This casts in a different light the later Norman account included in the Bayeux Tapestry where Harold is shown rather as Edward's ambassador, sent to make a sanctified oath of future inheritance. Ealdgyth asserts any pledge taken by Harold was under duress and necessary in order to regain his freedom.

Equally significant to the unfolding drama is the part internecine conflict played within Harold's own family and which largely contributed to the demise of the Anglo-Saxon royal bloodline and England's ultimate fate. On this matter, frustratingly, Ealdgyth does not offer us any clue as to the direction of her mind or that of her late husband.

The Tragedy of Harold Godwinson was composed in 1986 and is published for the first time on 14th October 2016; the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. The poem is written in Old English metre constructed around the half-line or distich whilst using alliteration to modulate rhythm. There is also a refrain.

  • Harold the King Book Trailer 2011

    1:50

    Harold Godwinesson. Earl. Lover. King
William, the bastard-born Duke of Normandy.

1066. The most famous date in English History - The Battle of Hastings.
    Two men. One crown.
    The prize? England itself.

When Edward the Confessor, a reluctant king with interest in nothing beyond hunting and prayer, dies without an heir it is to Harold Godwinson that England looks for leadership. Duke William wants the English throne for himself - and will stop at nothing to get it. It will take a powerful, competent and capable man to try and stop him.

Harold had been content, as Earl of Wessex, with the woman he loved and the children she had borne him, but he was to become the last, and only, English King to defend his Kingdom against foreign invasion.

A novel of enormous emotional power. Helen Hollick is a fabulous writer of historical fiction. Elizabeth Chadwick
