  • AMD Ryzen 3 3300X vs Intel i9-10900K: How much does CPU speed matter for games? | Upscaled

    12:52

Look, we know this isn't fair. We compared Intel's new flagship 10-core chip against AMD's 4-core 3300X. In almost any workload there would be no contest, but we wanted to see how these chips performed in three AAA games: Gears of War 5, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Red Dead Redemption. The GPU tends to matter so much more for game performance than the CPU, will we see a difference between these two chips? Stick around to the end for some thoughts on the i9-10900K as well.

Also, can you tell I got bored and bought some RGB lights?

One note, I got the name of the AMD motherboard wrong, it's the Crosshair Extreme VII not Crossfire

  • Megahertz, Gigahertz, Registers and Instructions: How does a CPU actually work? - Kendall Miller

    1:5:23

For decades, we’ve been creating ever higher abstractions between ourselves and the computing hardware we’re programming, but in the end whether you’re writing JavaScript, Haskell, or Python it all comes down to 1’s and 0’s running through hardware patterns that were well understood twenty years ago.
We’ll walk through the fundamentals of how CPU’s “think” in an accessible way (no engineering degree required!) so you can appreciate the marvel that is the modern CPU be it in a server data center or your fridge at home. You’ll learn how a CPU turns the code we feed it into actions, what’s the big difference between an ARM and an Intel processor, how CPU’s constantly optimize work for us, and where is it all going for the next few years.

Finally, we'll show how Meltdown and Spectre take advantage of CPU internals to expose data and why this class of security problems are going to be a challenge to the next generation of CPU's.

For decades, we’ve been creating ever higher abstractions between ourselves and the computing hardware we’re programming, but in the end whether you’re writing JavaScript, Haskell, or Python it all comes down to 1’s and 0’s running through hardware patterns that were well understood twenty years ago.

We’ll walk through the fundamentals of how CPUs “think” in an accessible way (no engineering degree required!) so you can appreciate the marvel that is the modern CPU, be it in a server data center or your fridge at home. You’ll learn how a CPU turns the code we feed it into actions, what’s the big difference between an ARM and an Intel processor, how CPUs constantly optimize work for us, and where is it all going for the next few years.

  • Faster Windows Phone Processors, Does It Really Matter? 1 GHz vs 1.4 GHz

    3:05

Comparison video showing you the different levels of performance you can expect with a 1 GHz processor compared to a 1.4 GHz processor on Windows Phone. Obviously, the 1.4 GHz processor is faster, but this video shows the difference that extra .4 GHz makes.

This is valuable to know when choosing between a Windows Phone like the HTC Titan II compared to the Nokia Lumia 900. There is a 100 MHz difference. Should that be enough to make you choose one over another? Watch the video to find out as we pit the 1 GHz HTC HD7 against the 1.4 GHz Samsung Focus S.

  • 1 GHz Gaming | The Extreme CPU Underclock

    4:47

Within the last few weeks I've been upgrading my personal gaming PC. One component, namely the Intel Pentium G3258 Processor has been at the center of it for the last couple of years, happily working away at an overclocked speed of 4.2 GHz. The increased speed seemed to provide quite a substantial gaming difference and it got me thinking, what sort of results could we expect from an underclock? On that thought we lowered the speed to just 1GHz and tested out a few games.

Today's system includes the Pentium G3258 CPU, 8GB of DDR3 Ram, an MSI H81M-P33 Motherboard, Radeon RX 460 and Windows 10 Pro.

Our tested games include Grand Theft Auto V, The Witcher 3 and Dirt Rally.

No 1.4v will not decrease lifespan or kill your processor. This is an opinion surfing the internet and threads. Before overlocking ask yourself if you have proper cooling, what specification limits do you have for your processor (AMD or Intel), what VRM does your motherboard have? Can you work with that information to provide a good overclock for your system.

So the Intel's new Cascade Lake-X CPU lineup has finally been released to the market, offering new CPU models in 10, 12, 14 and 18 core categories and trying to fight off AMD with significantly lower price tags of 40 to 50%, making this probably one of the biggest price drops in the history of computers.

The new CPUs feature some small tweaks compared to the previous models, such as improved supported memory frequency on the paper, and capacity has been doubled to 256gb, also the amount of PCI-E lanes has gone up, but overall the changes are very minimal.

When testing the actual CPU, the 10980XE 18-Core model in this case, we can quickly see that the performance is pretty much identical with the previous models in the same core category. There is absolutely no difference in the actual IPC performance of the CPU. The Cascade Lake-X can definitely overclock higher than the previous models atleast on water, as I managed to reach 5.1GHz in the end with my particular CPU using a custom watercooling loop, and both Geekbench3 and Cinebench R15 went through like a charm on the EVGA X299 Dark.

The stated increase on supported DDR4 frequency doesn't show any real gain on the actual IMC when memory is being overclocked. The CPU is no different from the other Skylake-X CPUs that I had, and far behind the original 7920X, which did around 4133MHz using 12-11-11 timings with CPU just on water. Overall, the EVGA X299 Dark can handle CPU like a charm, and there doesn't seem to be any reason to upgrade the motherboard for non-existing differences like these.

The video ended up being really long, but I put timestamps on different parts of the video, so you can skip the parts you aren't so interested in.

  • Extreme Overclock Attempt: 5.7GHz 7980XE, ft. KINGPIN & Roboclocker

    15:09

We got hands-on with KINGPIN's Roboclocker, EVGA's auto-overclocking monster with a liquid nitrogen loop.
Ad: Thermaltake View 37 on Amazon

    Original Roboclocker video here:

EVGA's Roboclocker is a semi-open loop design for liquid nitrogen overclocking, using Kingpin & TiN's software and relays to open and closed valves based on demand. The Roboclocker is able to achieve 5.7GHz relatively easily on this 7980XE CPU, and presently holds at least 4 world records for overclocking on both CPUs and GPUs (including the Titan V).
