  • Why is our universe fine-tuned for life? | Brian Greene

    21:48

At the heart of modern cosmology is a mystery: Why does our universe appear so exquisitely tuned to create the conditions necessary for life? In this tour de force tour of some of science's biggest new discoveries, Brian Greene shows how the mind-boggling idea of a multiverse may hold the answer to the riddle.

  • Physics Greatest Embarrassment No One Talks About- Why is Our Universe Too Perfect?

    16:30

Physicist don't want to talk about it but we live in a Universe that is almost too Perfect. In this episode we will explore what the fine tuning problem is and why we might live in a Universe that is almost too good to be true.

Are the constants of the Universe designed in such a way to create the perfect universe for live to thrive? Does the Anthropic principle, the Multi-verse theory or the Electric Universe hold any keys to unlock this mystery that has baffled Physicists for years.

Arguments for fine tuning: Physics has many constants like the charge of the electron, the gravitational constant, Planck’s constant. If any of their values were different, our universe, as we know it, would not be the same, and life would probably not exist.
    0:00 - Defining fine tuning
    2:20 - Gravitational constant
    3:59 - Electromagnetic Force
    5:02 - Strong force
    6:13 - Weak force
7:51 - Philosophical Arguments against fine tuning
9:36 - Scientific arguments against fine tuning
    11:59 - Sentient puddle
13:29 - Does fine tuning need an agent
15:14 - Louse on the tail a lion
Some say that it could not have occurred by chance, that there must be some agent, like a god that set up the constants to enable life.

Let's just look at the constants associated with the different forces. Gravity: If the gravitational constant was too small, gravity would be too weak, and planets wouldn’t form. If it was too large, then stars like the sun would burn up too fast.

Electromagnetism: The electromagnetic force is responsible for the distance at which electrons orbits in atoms. If the force was weaker, the atomic size would increase because electrons would be further away from the nucleus. This could impact chemistry, as it would change the strength of chemical bonds.

A higher constant would lead to cooler stars and a lower constant would lead to hotter stars. If the constant was bigger, atoms larger than hydrogen atoms could not form and stars may never ignite, because protons may not have been able to overcome the coulomb barrier to fuse in the first place.

Strong force: If the strong coupling constant were lower, then you wouldn’t have stable heavy atoms as it would not be enough to overcome proton-proton repulsion. If the strong nuclear force was only 1% weaker for example, atoms crucial for life like oxygen, carbon and nitrogen may not form in sufficient quantities.

If the strong force was 2% stronger the atoms might not form at all. We would be stuck with only hydrogen atoms. The reason for this is that the strong force would overpower the beta decay that is necessary for protons to be transmuted to neutrons.

If the weak force constant was bigger, too much hydrogen would have turned into helium during the big bang, so fewer stars. If the value was smaller, neutrons wouldn’t have changed into protons in significant numbers. This could result in a universe full of neutrons, and no atoms in the universe.

Arguments against fine tuning: It does not follow that fine tuning is unnatural. There would be no basis to make that judgement because unnatural would mean that other constants could or should exist naturally. That is not the case.

We can’t say that it’s improbable either because probability implies that other constants are possible. We don’t know that. No probability based on statistics can be calculated based only one data point.

Life is not necessarily limited to life as we know it or understand it. Life different than ours could evolve in a different universe with a different set of constants.

Other than philosophical arguments, are there any scientific ones? Yesm, the masses of the different fundamental particles. Although it is important that the down quark has a higher mass than the up quark to enable beta decay, which allows neutrons to transmute into protons and vise versa, the precise value of these quark masses appears arbitrary. They could have different values, but as long as the difference between them was about the same, not much would change.

The mass of the neutrino may be arbitrary too. The most important thing is just for the mass to be very close to zero, and the ratio of the masses of the three different neutrinos – electron, muon and tau neutrinos is important. But the precise number that the mass takes does not seem to make a difference.

This may be like the story of the sentient puddle that finds himself to fit very precisely into the hole he finds himself in. But there could be lots of holes with lots of sentient puddles with different dimensions of the hole that also believe the same thing.

If the universe was fine tuned for life, why doesn’t life play a central role in the universe? Why isn’t it everywhere? Why is most of the universe hostile towards life.
    #finetuning
Even if the universe if fine tuned, it does not necessarily mean that there is an agent that created it because if he is outside the bounds of physics, then he could create life in any universe, even one that is not fine tuned.

  • Is The Universe Perfect For Life? Understanding the Anthropic Principle

Consider that incomprehensible series of events that brought you to this moment. In a way that we still don’t understand, a complex mix of chemicals came together in just the right combination to kick off the evolution of life.

Generation after generation of bacteria, insects, fish, lizards, mammals and eventually humans somehow successfully found a buddy and passed along their genetic material to another generation. Clever humans invented computers, the internet, YouTube, and somehow you found your way to this exact video, to hear these words. Whoa.

It’s amazing to consider the Universe we live in, and how it’s perfectly tuned for life. If just a single variable was a little bit different, life as we know it probably wouldn’t exist. Gravity might be a repulsive force. Pokemons might catch you.

Doesn’t it feel like the Universe was created especially for us? I mean, didn’t I already tell you that we’re all the center of the Universe?

I’m sad to say, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. The reality is that the Universe is 100% completely inhospitable. Well, apart from a thin layer on the surface of our Earth, but that’s got to be a rounding error. A fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the teeniest percent of the volume of the Universe. The rest of the Universe is bunk.

If I was plucked out of our cozy environment and dropped into the near vacuum of pretty much anywhere else, the only resource would be a handful of hydrogen atoms. And what can you do with a few hydrogen atoms? Nothing. It might even give Bear Grylls a run for his money. He might have a little more trouble on a star’s surface, crisping up in a heartbeat.

Into a black hole? Surface of a neutron star? Near an exploding supernova? Please enjoy the crushing pressures and hellish temperatures of Venus, or the freezing irradiated surface of Mars.

Earth itself is mostly a deathtrap. Travel down a few kilometers and you’d bake and crush from the rising temperatures of the Earth’s interior. Travel up and the air gets thin, cold and killy. In fact, without our technology heating, cooling, or helping us breathe, we wouldn’t last more than a few days on most of the planet.

When you think about the landscape of time, we even live in a brief thumbnail of a moment when Earth is hospitable. Over the next few billion years, the Sun is going to heat up to the point that the surface of Earth will resemble the surface of Venus. And then the last hospitable hidey-hole in the entire Universe, that we know of, will wink out. The Universe is as inhospitable as it could possibly be. That is, without being completely inhospitable.

Especially when you consider the timeframes, and the long future when all the stars have died, where there’s nothing but black holes and frozen matter, and the Universe finally ditches that rounding error, and becomes 100% purely inhospitable.

Cosmologists use a term known as the anthropic principle to explain this very special moment we find ourselves in. There’s the greater anthropic principle that says the Universe wouldn’t be here without us to observe it, but that seems nutty and egotistical.

  • 5 Theories About The Universe That Will Blow Your Mind

    11:43

5 theorist about the universe that will blow your mind. We take a look at these 5 theories about the universe that will bow your mind.

Advancements in quantum mechanical theories and new technologies that allow us to better perceive our universe and understand the answers to questions we never believed possible to answer seem to be developing every single day as research scientists work to provide us with new insights and revelations to our universe that break the boundaries of what we ever thought was possible.

From these findings will often spawn new theories and enlightenment's that will cause even the most stoic of people the need to sit back and collect their thoughts in order to come to terms with theories that are so mind blowing, they are often groundbreaking in their own right. • THE UNIVERSE - Out of Nothing: Infinity | SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW

    48:20

SPACETIME - SCIENCE SHOW: The beginning of everything was the Big Bang. The creation of our universe was set in motion. But what came before the big bang? And what happened right after the big bang? We are fascinated by the infinite vastness of the universe. A vastness inconceivable to anything we can imagine. But how do we know that the universe is infinite? These are the questions humanity has been preoccupied with since we looked up at the stars: where do we come from? Where are we going? And where is our place in the infinity of the cosmos?

The Big Bang is the absolute starting point of our universe. The birth of space and time. But was there really nothing before that? A nothing beyond our imagination, or was there something before the big bang? What cosmologists and astrophysicists can say with certainty: Our universe came into existence exactly 13.8 billion years ago. And everything started from a single speck. A tiny speck where our three-dimensional universe, space, was buried. But where was this speck, this dot? There is no answer comprehensible for average human imagination. Only mathematics helps here. And it states: this three-dimensional, strongly curved speck was just there.

After the big bang, our universe ballooned. And continues to expand today, maybe for all eternity. Nevertheless, astronomers define the universe as manageable: it is as big as the eye can see. It consists of what we can observe in principle. In order to discover and observe galaxies and stars, we need to light. The light of our central star, our sun, takes 8 minutes to reach us. The light of the nearest stars a few years. Tens of thousands of years from the next galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope photographs galaxies several billion light-years away, and satellites measure the microwave radiation produced only 400,000 years after the Big Bang. With this data, cosmologists measure our universe in space and time.

Let there be light! In this episode of Spacetime, Professor Ulrich Walter explains how out of nowhere our universe emerged. How it expanded, and what happened and continues to happen today. We focus on the question whether our Universe will last forever, or whether it is finite. What would happen at the end? We examine the phenomena that our cosmos holds: What are dark energy and dark matter? Why black holes exist and how do wormholes work? Are there really parallel universes? And what does the detection of gravitational waves mean for science? We look at the theories, methods and instruments that cosmologists use to track down the origin and function of our universe.
The view into space gives us images of a fascinating and bewildering beauty. Landscapes of light and gas and stardust, shaped by cosmic wind and radiation. We are surrounded by an intangible infinity. A universe in which the earth is just a grain of sand on the beach of an ocean. But we are deciphering more and more secrets of the universe around us.

    About the documentary series SPACETIME
Take a look at the Earth from space: Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Walter has fulfilled the dream of mankind. In 1993 he traveled to Earth orbit. For the science format Spacetime, the astronaut once again sets off for the universe. In this reportage series, the physicist and professor of space technology presents current space travel trends and pioneering discoveries in space research.
The challenges of the dream call Astronaut, the new race of the space nations to the moon or the discovery of further Earth-like exoplanets: In this documentary series, Ulrich Walter proves how lifelike science can be and what answers space travel offers to some of the fundamental questions of human existence.
In Spacetime, the viewer learns about the visions that space research is currently pursuing and what insights will change our future forever.

Why does it appear, that humanity is the lone intelligence in the universe? The answer might be that planet Earth is more unique than we've previously assumed. The rare earth hypothesis posits exactly this - that a range of factors made Earth exceptionally unusual and uniquely able to produce intelligent life.

In upcoming episodes we’ll be exploring the anthropic principle and its two main versions - the strong and the weak anthropic principles. The strong anthropic principle tells us that the observed universe must be able to produce observers - including the contentious idea that this predicts the existence of universes beyond our own. But in today's episode we’re going to focus on the weak anthropic principle. It says that we must find ourselves in a part of the universe capable of supporting us. For example, in a planetary biosphere rather than floating in the void between the galaxies. This may seems tautological, but accounting for this observer selection bias is important to understanding why the universe looks the way it does from our perspective. And the weak anthropic principle is much more useful than that. When combined with the apparent absence of alien civilizations, it may tell us why intelligent life is incredibly rare in our universe.

  • Scientists Believe a Parallel Universe Exists

    10:29

The theory of multiple or parallel universes is one that blurs the line between scientific reality and science fiction. It’s a pretty huge topic of debate in the scientific community, with big names on both sides. If you believe that multiple universes exist, then maybe you can feel a little better about having the great genius physicist Stephen Hawking in your camp! He had a pretty spectacular theory on multiple universes.

This is the idea that everything you thought you ever knew – our planet, the solar system, our galaxy, all the other stars and galaxies out there as far as our fancy telescopes can see – it’s just one itsy bitsy piece of a really giant puzzle!

    TIMESTAMPS:
What a “multiverse” really is 1:26
There are infinite me’s and you’s each in their own universe ???? 2:25
What these universes look like 3:17
What would a parallel version of our world look like? 4:45
    How to prove that? 5:32
How could you possibly travel to a different universe? 8:24

    #sciense #universe #brightside

    SUMMARY:
    - Up until recent years, scientists were sure there was only one universe that contained everything known to humankind – hence the whole “uni” thing.
    - This is now known as the Multiple Worlds theory. So how does it work? You can mostly visualize it like a flow chart that keeps branching off continuously.
    - Some believe these universes are like bubbles, totally unseen by each other because, well, we just don’t have that kind of technology! There’s also the model that shows universes looking kinda like sheets of paper stacked on top of each other.
    - So, what would a parallel version of our world look like? Well, some attributes of our universe may be different, while some are the same! For example, perhaps this parallel version of our planet has grass and trees and birds flying in the sky and whatnot.
    - Anyway, before we travel to these worlds, we have to know they’re actually real. Proving or disproving their existence is no easy task.
    - The idea is to blast a handful of subatomic particles through a 50-foot tunnel, past a really strong magnet, and into a wall at the end. If some of those particles come out as a mirror image of themselves on the other side, that means science has made a breakthrough of galactic proportions.
    - In theory, some scientists believe the Big Bang that started it all could’ve been two universes colliding and forming a new one!
    - How could you possibly travel to a different universe? Of course, we’re talking theoretical physics here, so there are plenty of theories! First off, there’s always wormholes!
    - And, well, there’s always Stephen Hawking’s theory of how you can travel to another universe: all you have to do is jump into a black hole!

    2:54 With Great Power Comes...
    3:27 How Tobey Saved Tom
    4:10 Saving MJ
6:37 The Future Of The Amazing Spider-man

Ok so Spider-Man No Way Home built upon the last 20 years of the Sony Spider-verse to bring us a film that broke the MCU in order to make one of the biggest events in comic book movie history.

Seeing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appear on screen together alongside Tom Holland was something that we never thought could happen but Marvel delivered this massive event to make it the biggest film this side of the pandemic.

I hadn't felt that hyped since Jay-Z and Nas appeared on stage together during the I Declare war tour and it's still something that gives me Goosebumps to this day.

(I know you can feel the magic baby)

What I think that the film excelled at though was giving Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker a much deserved redemption arc. When you hear everything that went on behind the scenes with him it's difficult not to feel sorry for the actor and when he played the character he had several things riding against him.

The Amazing Spider-man released in 2012, just a mere five years after Tobey Maguire appeared as Peter Parker in Spider-man 3. The Amazing Spider-man 2 dropped two years later in 2014 and it would be a mere two years after that in which he was replaced by Tom Holland in a complete reboot of the character.

Garfield was actually due to announce The Amazing Spider-man 3 at a Brazillian Comic Book Movie event but he called in sick and then the project was scrapped. It was only after the Sony Email Hack that we found out Amy Pascal had been in talks with Kevin Feige to reboot the character in the MCU and Garfield's version was swept under the rug by the studio.

Online though there was still a massive community that supported him and just in the same way that The Snyder-cut had several supporters, Garfield did too. Thus seeing him back on the big screen alongside Tobey and Tom was a major moment that not only righted the wrongs of the past but it also showed the growth of the character.

Brian Cox visits NASA’s Space Power Facility in Ohio to see what happens when a bowling ball and a feather are dropped together under the conditions of outer space.

In this episode, Professor Brian Cox explores our origins, place and destiny in the universe. We all start our lives thinking that we are at the centre of the universe, surrounded by our family and the world as it spins around us. But the urge to explore is strong. Brian tells the story of how our innate human curiosity has led us from feeling that we are at the centre of everything, to our modern understanding of our true place in space and time - that we are living 13.8 billion years from the beginning of the universe, on a mere speck of rock in a possibly infinite expanse of space.

  • The Perfect Cosmological Principle | Return of the Steady State Universe

    2:46:46

According to modern cosmology, the Steady State model of the universe, an alternative to the Big Bang theory, is now obsolete. Yet, modern cosmology faces devastating blows to Big Bang cosmology. Dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPS) have not been detected. Super-symmetry particles have also not be detected. The recent observation (BICEP2) of gravitational waves in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) has been discredited. The absence of these discoveries is a devastating blow to modern cosmology placing it on shaky ground. As the Big Bang and Inflation theory begin to lose their luster, the return to a steady state theory of the universe seems inevitable.

We’ve been exploring the idea of three-dimensional time and applying it to physics. Multidimensional time isn’t a new idea by any stretch. Yet, a unique way of deriving three-dimensional time emerges from a set of simple and peculiar equations. Let’s suspend everything we know about time for a moment and open up our imagination. The concepts of ordinary time and time dilation found in physics have equivalences with our use of multidimensional time and are easily accounted for. These equivalences gives rise to temporal mechanics, a new approach to the concept of mass and how it relates to energy and conservation laws. Can multidimensional time be used to solve the unresolved problems in physics?

  • Why Steven Universe Was ALMOST Perfect.

    22:39

With Steven Universe Future ending we thought it might be a good time to look back at the entire history of the show and talk about what made it almost perfect. From Steven's humble beginnings with Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, to his epic conclusion in the battle against Blue, Yellow, and White Diamond, there is a lot to cover on what made this show so good, but as the title suggests along the way there was some bad as well.
