    On Thursday February 18th, 2021 the NASA Perseverance Rover will land on Mars. It is a wonderful robot, made out of steel and wire — but will future robots look like Perseverance? There is an emerging field of research on soft robots, where the machines are flexible. These soft robots have many advantages over traditional robots — they're safer, lighter, more flexible and can change their shape and size.

    NASA is investigating the use of soft robots for space missions. For future visits to Enceladus or Europa, a lander could cut a hole in the ice and then insert a compliant robot through the hole. This robot could then grow and change shape on the other side.

    What I learned about compliant mechanisms I summarize in the 8 P's of compliant mechanisms:

    1. Part count (reduced by having flexible parts instead of springs, hinges)
    2. Productions processes (many, new, different enabled by compliant designs)
    3. Price (reduced by fewer parts and different production processes)
    4. Precise Motion (no backlash, less wear, friction)
    5. Performance (no outgassing, doesn't require lubricant)
    6. Proportions (reduced through different production processes)
    7. Portability (lightweight due to simpler, reduced part count designs)
    8. Predictability (devices are reliable over a long period of time)

  • New devices morph and transform - like Iron Mans suit


    BYU researchers unfold new class of mechanical devices
    It took just over 10 years, but real science has finally caught up to the science fiction of Iron Man’s transforming exoskeleton suit. In a paper published Feb. 13, 2019, in Science Robotics, engineers at Brigham Young University (#BYU) detail new technology that allows them to build complex mechanisms into the exterior of a structure without taking up any actual space below the surface.

    This new class of origami-inspired mechanisms, called “developable mechanisms,” get their name from developable surfaces, or materials that can take on 3-D shapes from flat conformations without tearing or stretching, like a sheet of paper or metal. They reside in a curved surface (like, say, the arms of Iron Man’s suit) and can transform or morph when deployed to serve unique functions. When not in use, they can fold back into the surface of the structure seamlessly.

    “These new discoveries make it possible to build complex machines that integrate with surfaces to be very compact, but can deploy and do complex tasks,” said researcher Larry Howell, professor of mechanical engineering at BYU. “It opens up a whole new world of potential devices that have more functions, but are still very compact.”

    Making hyper-compact mechanisms is something increasingly important as manufacturers across medical, space and military industries are constantly working to get more complex functionality in less space. Potential applications of developable mechanisms include:

    • Medical: Surgical instruments that can both cut materials and deploy lights simultaneously during minimally-invasive surgery
    • Vehicles and airplanes: Storage components that could deploy from the inner surface of the fuselage and be completely out of the way when not in use
    • Military: Quad-rotor drones that have adjustable wing spans for fitting in tight spaces
    • Space: Wheels that could deploy claws for rock crawling, which could be especially useful to an interplanetary rover.

    This new class of mechanical structures evolved from Howell and colleague Spencer Magleby’s work on origami-based engineering, done in collaboration with origami artist Robert Lang. From solar arrays for NASA to bulletproof barriers for police officers, their work has generated national and international coverage. As the group of researchers moved to curved origami principles, the mathematics revealed a new way of doing more complex machines.

    “Origami was a stepping stone to this,” Magleby said. “The art of Origami has inspired us to do things that don’t even look like Origami, yet it is the core of much of this new engineering.”

    The new line of research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and includes researchers at BYU, the University of Southern Indiana and Lang Origami.

    “It’s pretty cool to accomplish things that have merely been science fiction in the past,” Howell said. “These are discoveries that will enable us to do things that no one has ever been able to do before. And we hope that other engineers, as they build on these discoveries, will apply them in ways that will help make the world a better place.

    5 Advanced Robot Animal You Need to See
    The world we live in today is evolving faster than you can ever imagine. And one of the fields that is coming up with impressive technological advancements is biometrics.

    Sounds familiar? Well, if you’ve been binging a lot of sci-fi movies lately, then you’ll know that this is the field dedicated to imitating aspects of nature to better understand and potentially solve complex human issues.

    This is the reason why so many engineers and researchers are working towards creating robot animal models that will revolutionize the world.

    Indeed, these inventions can help researchers better understand locomotion, evolution, and simply how certain animals accomplish the amazingly unique tasks that they do.

    With that being said, let’s take a look at 5 advanced robot animals that you need to see today!

    5.SpotMini- Boston Dynamics

    While we’re still decades away from creating the first sentient, fully-functioning human cyborg, technology has made significant improvements in bringing the first dog-like robots to life.
    One company, in particular, that is spearheading these designs is Boston Dynamics.

    Starting with BigDog in 2005, the US company has built a whole stable of four-legged robots in recent years.

    Their first product was designed to be a robotic-like horse that could travel over terrain too rough for conventional vehicles.

    The US Army ultimately rejected the robot for being too noisy, but since then the company has scaled down its design, first to the Spot, and now to the Spot Mini.

    The Spot Mini comes with a robotic arm where its head should be and is generally considered a domestic helper.

    But a sleeker second edition without the arm was released earlier this last year. There’s little detail on what the new robot is designed for, but the more polished design suggests a more consumer-focused purpose.

    Honestly, we can’t wait for the day that they release an actual dog that you can purchase from the store and call it your very own pet that can do all kinds of tricks and jumps.

    I mean, how amazing could that be?
    4. Snake Robot- Carnegie Mellon University

    Okay, so snakes might not be the most beloved animals around, but their anatomy can come in handy. See, scientists have always been intrigued by the way in which snakes can easily maneuver through cracks and crevices of any kind.

    Yes, search and rescue missions are a common theme for animal-inspired robots, but the snake robot built by CMU researchers is one of the first to be tested in a real disaster.

    A team of roboticists from the university helped Mexican Red Cross workers search collapsed buildings for survivors after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico City in September of 2017.

    The snake design provides a small diameter and the ability to move in almost any direction, which makes the robot ideal for accessing tight spaces, though the team was unable to locate any survivors.

    The snake currently features a camera on the front, but researchers concluded that the experience helped them realize they should also add a microphone to listen for people trapped under the rubble.

    Once such advancements are actualized, they could prove the difference between life and death for an individual that is trapped under the rubble during an earthquake or a collapsed building.
    3. Bio-Hybrid Stingray- Harvard University

    The sting-ray is one of the most complex and advanced marine species in the world. Not only has it been around for millions of years unchanged by evolution, but it also possesses special features fine-tuned for survival in the deep, cold, ocean waters.

    Taking more than just inspiration from the animal kingdom, a group from Harvard built a robotic stingray out of silicone and rat heart muscle cells.

    The robot uses the same synchronized undulations along the edge of its fins to propel itself as a ray does.

    But while a ray has two sets of muscles to pull the fins up and down, the new device has only one that pulls them down, with a springy gold skeleton that pulls them back up again.

    The cells are also genetically modified to be activated by flashes of light.

  • A Computational Design Tool for Compliant Mechanisms


    We present a computational tool for designing compliant mechanisms. Our method takes as input a conventional, rigidly-articulated mechanism defining the topology of the compliant design. This input can be both planar or spatial, and we support a number of common joint types which, whenever possible, are automatically replaced with parameterized flexures. As the technical core of our approach, we describe a number of objectives that shape the design space in a meaningful way, including trajectory matching, collision avoidance, lateral stability, resilience to failure, and minimizing motor torque. Optimal designs in this space are obtained as solutions to an equilibrium-constrained minimization problem that we solve using a variant of sensitivity analysis. We demonstrate our method on a set of examples that range from simple four-bar linkages to full-fledged animatronics, and verify the feasibility of our designs by manufacturing physical prototypes.

  • Computational Design of Mechanical Characters

    We developed an interactive design system that allows non-expert users to create animated mechanical characters. Given an articulated character as input, the user iteratively creates an animation by sketching motion curves indicating how different parts of the character should move. For each motion curve, our framework creates an optimized mechanism that reproduces it as closely as possible. The resulting mechanisms are attached to the character and then connected to each other using gear trains, which are created in a semi-automated fashion. The mechanical assemblies generated with our system can be driven with a single input driver, such as a hand-operated crank or an electric motor, and they can be fabricated using rapid prototyping devices.

    We demonstrate the versatility of our approach by designing a wide range of mechanical characters, several of which we manufactured using 3D printing. While our pipeline is designed for characters driven by planar mechanisms, significant parts of it extend directly to non-planar mechanisms, allowing us to create characters with compelling 3D motions.

  • Bend-It: Design and Fabrication of Kinetic Wire Characters


    Elastically deforming wire structures are lightweight, durable, and can be bent within minutes using CNC bending machines. We present a computational technique for the design of kinetic wire characters, tailored for fabrication on consumer-grade hardware. Our technique takes as input a network of curves or a skeletal animation, then estimates a cable-driven, compliant wire structure which matches user-selected targets or keyframes as closely as possible. To enable large localized deformations, we shape wire into functional spring-like entities at a discrete set of locations. We first detect regions where changes to local stiffness properties are needed, then insert bendable entities of varying shape and size. To avoid a discrete optimization, we first optimize stiffness properties of generic, non-fabricable entities which capture well the behavior of our bendable designs. To co-optimize stiffness properties and cable forces, we formulate an equilibrium-constrained minimization problem, safeguarding against inelastic deformations. We demonstrate our method on six fabricated examples, showcasing rich behavior including large deformations and complex, spatial motion.
