    A quick clarification....
    It took me 8 months to learn how to do this, but I was only picking up the bike and running to the end of the driveway and back every day. I wasn't ACTIVELY trying to learn. Meaning... I wasn't struggling and trying to make my brain learn. I simply got on the bike every day, tried to operate it to the end of the driveway, turned around and tried to operate it back. The goal was to understand how my brain figured things out on its own, without trying to force it to. Many people have built bikes like this and figured it out in much less than 1 day by staying on the bike until they were able to master it. I had no timelines, and was using this as an exploratory activity to learn how I learn.

    Do not misinterpret this to mean that I struggled and tried very hard every day for 8 months. That's simply not true.

  • What if I Told You This Was a Snatch Block??

    15:42

    In this video I'll show you a new type of snatch block from Custom Splice that is much lighter, safer, and easier to carry with you in the recovery tool bag! They call it a Custom Splice
    Diamond Recovery Ring - Soft Shackle Pulley, and it requires you to have a soft shackle instead of a metal shackle and a winch rope instead of a wire rope but seems to work very well if you have the proper gear. One of the concerns many people had on instagram was heat build up, so in this video we put it to the test!

    What I really like about this project is that it taught me to think about the world differently with respect to physical objects. I now sometimes think about the outline of physical objects as if it's a line. The specific area of math that you use for things like this is called Parametric Equations. I had a lot of great conversations about this stuff with Hansi and Jerobeam. I was very impressed by their intelligence, and also very thankful that they took their time to share these special things with me. I know they'd really appreciate it if you'd reach out to their website and purchase OsciStudio as well as some of Jerobeam's music. Even if you don't have an oscilloscope, purchasing the software will obviously help them continue to do what they love doing. Hansi showed me a very interesting thing he's working on involving ray tracing. It was fascinating.

  • Mystery of Prince Ruperts Drop at 130,000 fps - Smarter Every Day 86

    Videos like this don't just happen. They require lots of time, and lots of favors from very smart and kind people willing to help me and you learn. PLEASE take a moment and read the following information and support those who supported me.

    This is the camera we used for the ultra-high speed shots. It has the FAST option.

    You absolutely have to check out the stuff Cal Makes. We're just goofing off in this video, but the guy is some type of glass wizard genius. It would make me happy if you bought something from him and he felt like the audience appreciated all the time he donated to this video. He basically gave me 2 entire nights of his entire shop.

    I feel like we're friends at this point, and he is open to the idea of doing more videos in the future and teach me more about what he knows about glass. Let's make it worth his time.

    I'm a HUGE FAN of the song Gordon wrote for this video. His landlord would really appreciated if you downloaded it so he could make rent this month.

    It looks like he's assembling a new album that I may like more than Mammals:

    Show him some love.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This video involved about 2 months of research, and me reaching out to several individuals. I would like to thank everyone who took time out of their schedule to contribute to my wacky research. A big thanks to the following people:
    My wife and kids. I'm sorry this took so long and I wasn't the kind of active father I want to be during the 5 weeks it took to make this.
    Dr. Martyn Poliakoff for getting me access to documents which details experiments on the Prince Rupert's Drop by the Royal Society
    (behind a pay wall)
    Being able to calculate the failure front velocity of a Prince Rupert's drop is a pretty big deal. For years this was a scientific mystery. High speed camera technology is only recently fast enough to provide data like this. Thanks to Vision Research for letting me use the V1610 to try to unravel this mystery for the public in general.
    Rob Kuefner for reaching out to me and offering to convert certain equations into LaTeX format for me.
    Dr. Jeff Evans from UAH. A friend and neighbor who just happens to have a PhD and be an expert in fracture mechanics. Thank you for helping me by pointing me in the right direction in the early stages of my research. It's time we hangout again.
    Brian: thanks for letting me use your green screen and telling me about Orbix in the first place. I stayed up there til about 1 or 2 am two nights in a row acting stupid in front of of the camera all alone. Now that I look back at that footage without the context of this video, it's all very strange.
    Thanks to Loïc Samuel for taking time to make the custom TNT Degradation graphic!
    P.S. There was some old guy walking around the track at the park when I was filming me jumping on the bridge railing. I'm pretty sure you kept walking until I was done just to make sure you wouldn't have to take me to the hospital if I broke my leg. I'll never meet you again, but I'm grateful for this kind gesture you didn't know I noticed.
    A personal thank you to Air Force MSgt Ryan Crane for nominating me for this flight. Thank you sir.
    The Thunderbirds have a YouTube Channel
    This flight took place on May 3, 2019 in Biloxi Mississippi. The reason it took so long to release is the high amount of research I wanted to do before releasing the video. I even visited the Air Force Research Lab at Wright Patterson AFB to discuss some aspects of this video with Aerodynamicists. Synchronizing all this footage and coordinating additional B Roll with the Thunderbirds Public Affairs Officer also required a lot of effort.
    These are my own thoughts, not those of the U.S. Air Force or the Thunderbirds:
    I've been around a lot of pilots and ground crew in my life and I must say that the professionalism displayed by the Thunderbirds was astounding. Their goal is to inspire and demonstrate the capabilities of the US Air Force, so I'll take it a step further. If you're a smart young person who is interesting in changing your life for the better, strongly consider the Air Force. The job market isn't the best at the moment but the Air Force still has opportunities available for you to learn incredible skills even if you're not interested in flying. They manage everything from logistics, electronics, aerospace, cyber and even space systems. The threats to freedom are becoming more complex, and in my experience working for the Department of Defense over a 15 year span (even longer if you count my work as a contractor) The US Air Force consists of some of the most intelligent service members our country has. These people are book-smart, but also have the confidence to solve real world problems with their own hands. If I have a complex aerodynamic question, my first call is usually to someone in the Air Force, because they understand these complex phenomena intuitively. For example, in this video you would hear Flack and I talking about pitot tubes in flight. We also had other discussions about fuel burn rates, Prandtl Glauert, weather.... all kinds of things. Simply put, if you're looking for direction in your life, and you're good with science and math... consider the Air Force. That being said, they also need other types of skills as well. Logisticians, writers, creative people who know how to solve complex problems in unique ways.
  • The trick that made animation realistic
    5:13
    Rotoscoping changed animation forever. This is how.
    One breakthrough made animation look natural. And it involved a clown dancing on a roof.
    In this episode of Vox Almanac, Vox’s Phil Edwards explores the beginning of rotoscoping, a technique animators can use to create realistic motion. Invented by Max Fleischer of Fleischer Studios (and echoed and practiced by many others), it involves taking filmed footage and using it as a traceable model for animation. The results are fluid and natural in a way animation had never been before.
    As the above video shows, it started with Max’s brother Dave dancing on a roof in a clown costume. Footage of that was then used to model the classic Koko the Clown cartoons, which formed the basis for many Fleischer Studios films. Today, animators still use techniques like rotoscoping to turn real movement into animation.
    Check out the original patent!
    If you want to learn more about early animation, check out Fleischer Studios on the web and YouTube.
    You can also read Man and Superman: The Fleischer Studio Negotiates the Real in Quarterly Review of Film and Video by J.P. Telotte, which describes the techniques used for the animated Superman series.
    The Fleischer Story by Leslie Cabarga is invaluable for any early animation fan and has lots of trivia you won’t find anywhere else.
  • Smarter Every Day 228 - Snatch Block Supercut
    I really liked the Smarter Every Day video about pulleys. But I really enjoyed the SNATCH BLOCKS.
    All credits go to Destin from Smarter Every Day. Please check out his channel and his original video - it's fantastic.
    2:14
    You ever snap into a Slim Jim? You ever snap into a Snatch Block?
    Have you ever wondered about the word Pulley? What about Snatch Block?
    Well in this video, we analyze the Youtube channel Smarter Every Day and their recent upload about Snatch Blocks. Destin seemed to have wayyyyyyy too much fun making this video, and I couldn't help start laughing every time I heard him say SNATCH BLOCK with increasing emotion. I've loved his channel since I first saw it, and recommend you check it out if you haven't yet.
    Anyway, I'm thankful I didn't turn it into a drinking game cause I'd likely be dead based on how often he was screaming SNATCH BLOCK.
    Fishing is a unique profession which requires the user to stand in one spot and click on moving objects. Yay! What fun!
    Now with Fishmonger, you can sit back, relax and watch your character automate the process and fish for you while you multitask and be a slightly more productive human.
    Fishmonger has been around for several years and has options to work on Vanilla and WOTLK private servers, as well as WOD, Legion and the latest version, BFA.
    Fishmonger is free to download and try.
    Good video to watch to help your setup:
    Great video for BFA general fishing info:
    It starts off in trial mode which provides limited function and does not cost anything. If you like what you see and want to try the full version, send me your Fishmonger ID # and I will give you codes to try out the full version before you buy it. I don't want anyone to pay for something if they don't 100% approve of it. All purchased codes are non-refundable, so verify it works on your computer BEFORE paying me.
    Fishmonger is a botting program which is against the TOS of the game. Use at your own risk. I can't be held responsible for irresponsible fishing habits [fishing for hours at a time or overnight, etc...] or for the usage of your account.
    Fishmonger has never been involved in a ban wave, but that doesn't mean it is 100% safe. No bot is 100% safe. If anyone tells you a bot is 100% safe they are lying. Bot at your own risk.
  • Why You Cant Really Break Into a Smart Home with a Laser
    8:02
    A few days ago Smarter Every Day, posted a video about how you can use lasers to break into a smart home. Technically, it's super neat, but I think Destin misrepresented reality a bit.
    In this video, I'm talking about what he got wrong, and try to share the bigger picture of how exploits like this can impact smart homes.
