  • How Dollar Stores Conquered America - Cheddar Explains

Dollar stores have conquered the United States, in an era where a “retail apocalypse” is slowly decimating brick and mortar retail shopping. The spread of these dollar stores is also deeply tied to issues of income inequality in the U.S. It’s argued that not only do these institutions benefit from poverty, but also that they perpetuate it. It has even led to some communities to limit the spread of dollar stores in their towns. So how did the dollar store conquer the U.S. - and what is their real impact?

  • Why Obnoxiously Loud Car Alarms Arent As Common Today- Cheddar Explains

If you lived in a big city in the 90s, you're probably one of the unlucky people who was kept up at night on a regular basis by errant car alarms. • Why Stick Shifts Are Going Extinct

Die hard drivers love manual transmissions, but they are disappearing from the auto market. Well under 2 percent of new cars sold in 2019 came with manual transmissions, and companies continue to drop stick shifts from their lineups, even in categories popular with serious car enthusiasts, such as supercars.

In 2006, 47 percent of the 305 car models sold in the US offered standard or optional manual transmissions. But that number fell over time. One decade later, only 27 percent of new car offered manuals. By 2020, the number was just 13 percent.

There are a few holdouts of course, and there are still a few sports cars, muscle cars, trucks, and even some cheaper vehicles that still can be bought with a manual. But as automatic transmission technology continues to improve, fewer drivers seem to be seeking out manuals.

Some die-hard enthusiasts cry foul and say the there really is nothing like the feeling of control and connectedness one gets with a manual transmission. They say auto enthusiasts are being underserved by this shift.

While the internal combustion engine is expected to be around for awhile, the small but growing popularity of electric cars stands to further marginalize manual transmissions.

Last summer, I had the idea to make a film showing the advantages of travelling by train across Europe. After 6 months of work to find sponsors, to build the itinerary etc. My friend Kevin and I finally left Paris for our first rail trip on the old continent. The journey was supposed to last 2 months, but unfortunately, after just a week, when we reached Ukraine, reality caught up with us. We had to cancel our plans and head back home because of the sanitary situation. So I decided to adapt my script a bit and started looking for the footage I had not been able to shoot myself. I hope you'll like the result.

  • Giant Airport: The 5-Star Airport in Munich | Giant Hubs | Episode 1 | Free Documentary

Giant Hubs Episode 1: Munich Airport - Europe’s one and only 5-star-airport.

The Munich based Franz –Joseph-Strauss Airport is rated the only 5-Star airport in Europe. And it is also one of Europe´s biggest hubs. An average 1.100 flights have to be taken care of every day, 44.6 million passengers chose Munich as destination in 2017, either for holiday or business purposes or simply as a transit hub to another location.

The Munich Airport is a like a big machine, several hearts beat have to beat in the same pace to make sure that everything is running fine. How does this machine cope with an average of 120.000 passengers every day? What has to be done to guarantee the passengers safety. How is the endless flow of passengers and airplanes directed to move as smooth as possible?

This documentary takes a close look on those gears and sprockets that make a giant hub like Munich run efficiently and flawlessly. And it has access to several operational units that are usually restricted to the public eye.

1200 Federal police and 400 customs officers are in charge with guarding the German border and making sure that nothing illegal is being brought into the country.

Ramp Agents oversee baggage and cargo flows from the terminals to the airplanes.

The other way round, baggage handlers provide the passengers bags as fast as possible in the terminal. And, above all, the tower personnel ensures that airplanes do not collide during take-off or landing.

  • European leaders and 27 Presidents and Prime Ministers of EU states celebrate Europe Day 2020

Europe Day is marked on May 9 every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historic ‘Schuman Declaration’.

At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.

The idea of the community was that its founding members France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg would pool their coal and steel resources and create a common market for them by lifting import and export duties.

The idea was partly economic: French foreign minister Robert Schuman’s proposition came just five years after World War Two. But it was also political. The idea was that by merging the economic interests of France and Germany, it would reduce the risk of conflict in the future.

A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

This video has all pre-recorded statements by EU Council President Charles Michel, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU Parliament President David Sassoli and thet 27 leaders of EU member states.
