  • Neil deGrasse Tyson Explains the Simulation Hypothesis

Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are here (or are they?) to investigate if we're living in a simulation. We explore the ever-advancing computer power and how that impacts the simulation hypothesis. Chuck wonders if a simulation universe has anything to do with us not being able to travel at the speed of light. You'll learn about Bayesian statistics. Lastly, Neil tells us how he was ready to embrace the simulation hypothesis until he came across a certain idea that changed his mind.

  • Are we living in a simulation? - Zohreh Davoudi

Is our reality a detailed computer simulation? And how can we know for sure? Explore the scientific and philosophical theories surrounding this debate.

All life on Earth— living and inanimate, microscopic and cosmic— is governed by mathematical laws with apparently arbitrary constants. And this opens up a question: If the universe is completely governed by these laws, couldn’t a powerful enough computer simulate it exactly? Could our reality actually be a detailed simulation set in place by a more advanced civilization? Zohreh Davoudi investigates.

  • Was 2020 A Simulation?

There are scientists right now who are working on experiments to answer the question - are we living in a simulation?

This future science short video documentary breaks down and explains the simulation theory. Along with why people such as Elon Musk believe in the theory, and is even funding work in the area. We also take a look at the math behind the simulation argument, showing the probability that we are living in a digital world.

  • Why Youre Probably Not a Simulation

Have you ever have a dream you were so sure was real? The simulation argument challenges our very notions of reality by asking whether everything we perceive is nothing more than an elaborate computer simulation. Recently, we've even seen headlines like one in a billion probability that we live in the real world. Could this be right? How does this affect how we think about our lives? And are there any counter-arguments to save us? New research from the Cool Worlds Lab resolves.

Ultimately, this podcast is a small side hobby for me with the goal of sharing and discussing ideas. For now, I post a few clips every Tue & Fri. I did a poll and 92% of people either liked or loved the posting of daily clips, 2% were indifferent, and 6% hated it, some suggesting that I post them on a separate YouTube channel. I hear the 6% and partially agree, so am torn about the whole thing. I tried creating a separate clips channel but the YouTube algorithm makes it very difficult for that channel to grow unless the main channel is already very popular. So for a little while, I'll keep posting clips on the main channel. I ask for your patience and to see these clips as supporting the dissemination of knowledge contained in nuanced discussion. • Simulation Theory Debunked - Examining and Refuting the Simulation Hypothesis by Nick Bostrom

You’ve probably heard the theory that the universe and all of existence is a simulation, specifically an ancestor simulation. This isn’t a fringe conspiracy theory, but an idea that has been touted by Elon Musk, Neil Degrass Tyson, and other very intelligent people.

In this quick video I’ll go over the initial philosophical argument for this idea called the Simulation Hypothesis put forth by Nick Bostrom in his paper  “Are you living in a computer simulation?” and examine if there are any logical grounds to believe we really live in a simulation.

If you like this video at any point and think it’s interesting or helpful, please give it a ‘thumbs-up,’ as that really helps its visibility in the algorithm. Also, I’d love to have you subscribe below for more videos.

  • Elon Musks Question to AI: Whats Outside The Simulation?

Elon Musk thinks we are most likely in a simulation, because we exist. If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then games will be indistinguishable from reality, or civilization will end. One of those two things will occur. A computer simulation according to Elon Musk seems to be the best explanation for how we got here without being in a simulation. According to Elon Musk there’s a billion to one chance we’re living in base reality.

There is a very good chance that we are living in a computer simulation. The computer simulation theory holds that all of reality as we know it is an artificial construct created by an advanced civilization. There is evidence that computer games are more complex and realistic every year and so it seems very likely that the future of computer logic will simulate worlds that are indistinguishable from ours.

Could this advancement of computers eventually lead to a simulated reality that is indistinguishable from our own? The answer is that we don’t know what the future of computers will be, but the fact that we are already close to producing photorealistic images in real time indicates that things are moving in that direction.

Complete immersion in a virtual world is no longer a pipe dream - it is very close to being an everyday reality. The next step is that we will place our brains into a computer simulation where we can sense, experience, and interact completely with our world.

  • why we may live in a virtual reality

You may've forgot this... but you are an eternal spiritual being having a temporary human experience...

Find Out Your Vibration NOW and Receive a Personalized Meditation:

You may have forgotten this but you are an eternal spiritual being, having a very temporary human experience. And when we come here, when we come to this reality and I say that because we are eternal spiritual beings having temporary human experiences, so we've existed beyond just this body, this form, when we come here, we forget that. Honestly, that's what makes it so challenging to be here and my guess is that if you're here right now, you're probably somebody that's gone through a spiritual awakening or are going through a spiritual awakening or probably about to go through a spiritual awakening because right now what is happening on the planet is more people are waking up than ever before. You can take this channel as a symbol of that, there are more people joining, there are more people that are awake to this kind of information than when I even started like three, four years ago making YouTube videos.

But one of the things that we all agree to collectively experience all in our own way, is a forgetting of who we are, so that we can then remember who we are. Now the thing is, when we went through that process there was a lot of pain involved. Most of us may have had or been in families where there was a lot of trauma, there was a lot of patterns that we were working to transmute and because of that pain though, the benefit that comes out of it is that then we go through a lot of pressure and you see the thing is pressure creates more of a desire to go inwards and that inwardness that we'd begin to go in we begin to realize these new things about ourselves that aren't really new, they're ancient. All the ancient, many ancient civilizations talk about this, but it's really right now we're waking up to it. And the pain that we went through served a purpose to get us to a point of going within ourselves to question things.

And I think that when you look out into society right now and you see all the craziness that's happening, it's all happening because the old system is falling apart, the old system, the old way of going about things. Now here's a perspective, this is gonna be a little bit more of an esoteric video than my normal videos but I really wanted to show you and to create a stillness that through this video you can connect to, almost like a kinda like a download or something like that, I don't know, I mean I know that sounds esoteric but the idea and the understanding that I wanted to share with you is that everything in our reality is in a way a symbol, Carl Yoon used to talk about this. When I look into reality sometimes from a higher perspective, a higher point of view when I'm in meditation, which I just was, even something like this, right? This beautiful cactus right here, like think about how poetic some of this is like you have these sharp prickly things and you have this beautiful cactus that doesn't even require that much water.

And even now, as I just was doing that I got this on my hand and it just it's kinda painful, but there's like a beauty in that. When you look at a rose, think about the symbolic, you know I'm recording this on Valentine's day, think about the beautiful symbol of rose. Now from a higher dimensional point of view, imagine there was like, we were thinking of these colors, which all maybe had different symbols, we were thinking of like the fact that a rose is so beautiful but it has these thorns on it and if the thorns prick you, it hurts and in a way that's a very beautiful metaphor for love and the rose itself is like an embodiment of that love energy. Now I know it's a symbol, I know that sounds kinda out there but when you look out into reality just in general and you look at like beautiful views like this you look at how everything works together.

Elon Musk famously believes we're living in a simulation, that constant technological improvement means we could be trapped inside a video game console created by a more advanced civilization.

In this video, Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society, Joscha Bach and Donald Hoffman, both cognitive psychologists, all weigh in on whether this is base reality or a realistic fiction.

What insight from these three thinkers gets your mind ticking? Let us know in the comments! We're stunned at the thought that, if this is a simulation, humans might not be the central purpose of it; we may be an accident of a larger experiment.

Bill Nye, scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, is a man with a mission: to help foster a scientifically literate society, to help people everywhere understand and appreciate the science that makes our world work. Making science entertaining and accessible is something Bill has been doing most of his life.

In Seattle Nye began to combine his love of science with his flair for comedy, when he won the Steve Martin look-alike contest and developed dual careers as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. Nye then quit his day engineering day job and made the transition to a night job as a comedy writer and performer on Seattle’s home-grown ensemble comedy show “Almost Live.” This is where “Bill Nye the Science Guy®” was born. The show appeared before Saturday Night Live and later on Comedy Central, originating at KING-TV, Seattle’s NBC affiliate.

While working on the Science Guy show, Nye won seven national Emmy Awards for writing, performing, and producing. The show won 18 Emmys in five years. In between creating the shows, he wrote five children’s books about science, including his latest title, “Bill Nye’s Great Big Book of Tiny Germs.”

Nye is the host of three currently-running television series. “The 100 Greatest Discoveries” airs on the Science Channel. “The Eyes of Nye” airs on PBS stations across the country.
Bill’s latest project is hosting a show on Planet Green called “Stuff Happens.” It’s about environmentally responsible choices that consumers can make as they go about their day and their shopping. Also, you’ll see Nye in his good-natured rivalry with his neighbor Ed Begley. They compete to see who can save the most energy and produce the smallest carbon footprint. Nye has 4,000 watts of solar power and a solar-boosted hot water system. There’s also the low water use garden and underground watering system. It’s fun for him; he’s an engineer with an energy conservation hobby.

Nye is currently the Executive Director of The Planetary Society, the world’s largest space interest organization.

Dr. Joscha Bach (MIT Media Lab and the Harvard Program for Evolutionary Dynamics) is an AI researcher who works and writes about cognitive architectures, mental representation, emotion, social modeling, and multi-agent systems. He is founder of the MicroPsi project, in which virtual agents are constructed and used in a computer model to discover and describe the interactions of emotion, motivation, and cognition of situated agents. Bach’s mission to build a model of the mind is the bedrock research in the creation of Strong AI, i.e. cognition on par with that of a human being. He is especially interested in the philosophy of AI and in the augmentation of the human mind.

Donald Hoffman is professor of cognitive science at the University of California, Irvine. His writing has appeared in Scientific American and Edge, and his work has been featured in the Atlantic, Wired, and Quanta. He resides in Irvine, California.

Bill Nye: Are we living in a video game? Are we actually part of a giant simulation?

Joscha Bach: The question of whether we are living in a simulation is more related to something more narrow, that is: Is this computer program that we're living in intentionally created or is it just a natural occurrence?
Bill Nye: It seems to me it's a hard question to resolve because it's easy to imagine a game designer, a simulation designer, making it so sophisticated that you can't tell.

Joscha Bach: There is this argument that, for instance, Elon Musk made that we can build game consoles that create virtual worlds that look a lot like simulations to us...

  • What If Were Living in a Simulation?

Of all the fundamental questions, few are more compelling than this one: What if we’re living in a simulation? From Elon Musk to Neil deGrasse Tyson, popular figures have brought this fascinating question to the forefront of modern philosophy. So, are we really living in a simulation? Is there any merit to this extraordinary claim?

  • Our Universe Is A Simulation - Heres How Its Rendered

Our universe is a simulation. Science is finally coming around to the idea with 50% of physicists now on board with the simulation argument. But have you ever wondered how our simulation is rendered? I mean is it projected through a super computer or is it all a projection in the mind of God? Well, fortunately we have Tom Campbell and his MBT theory to help explain it all. The surprising thing is that we can compare the rendering of our universe to many video games, especially one called No Man's Sky, which debuted in 2016. If you want to know the secrets of how our simulation happens, then stay tuned to the entire video and enjoy. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comment section. And big thank you to everyone who has donated to the channel and who has been a long-time viewer and supporter. I appreciate it.

  • Could We Be Living In A Computer Simulation?

Hey there! I need to ask you a question? Do you ever think about where we came from? I don’t mean our species. I mean our whole universe! I’ve been pondering over it a lot lately. My therapist says I should stop before I literally go insane! Do you ever wonder if this is real? Are we real living beings, or is this all made up? What I’m trying to say is, are we living in a computer simulation?

In order to properly understand the idea of the Simulation Hypothesis, we need to venture back to its origins. While it’s easy to believe it was made up by some nerdy science professor on his lunch hour, the theory actually dates back thousands of years to ancient China.

Zhuangzi, a Chinese philosopher who lived between the years 369 and 286 BC, is said to be the first to present the idea of reality being an illusion. In a passage known as ‘The Butterfly Dream’, Zhuangzi outlines how dreams can seem so real, the senses that help us tell them apart from reality shouldn’t be trusted. Other ancient philosophies such as that of Maya have also suggested something similar.

While the works of ancient philosophers should no doubt live on, we’d be doing you a great disservice if we didn’t discuss the science behind the theory. Let’s fast forward to the present day. Nick Bostrom, a Swedish philosopher at the University of Oxford has expanded on the idea of something dubbed the ‘Simulation Hypothesis’. In a 2010 paper he wrote titled, “Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?”, Nick’s argument is broken down into three main points. Each acts as a possible scenario, but only one can be a reality. The scenarios read as the following:

The fraction of human-level civilizations that reach a posthuman stage is very close to zero.
The fraction of posthuman civilizations that are interested in running ancestor-simulations is very close to zero.
The fraction of all people with our kind of experiences that are living in a simulation is very close to none.

  • Why Elon Musk says We`re Living in a Simulation - Numbers are the within of all things The Matrix

Why Elon Musk says We`re Living in a Simulation?

Our Creator is a Cosmic Computer Programmer?
In 2003 Oxford University, Professor Nick Bostrom published, Are You Living, In A Simulation an argument stating there’s a high likelihood, that we’re all pieces of code created in a computer simulation. Strom’s theory isn’t the first, that humans live on a hard drive somewhere on a great cosmic computer. But it did popularize the idea by putting it in a way, that appeals to scientists. Physicists are particularly drawn to the theory, and they continue to discuss it nearly 15 years later.

I know there will be skeptics about this theory, but with these premises, you just might find yourself believing what I`m about to tell you. That we might be living, inside of a simulated computer. A computer-generated reality.

  • These Simulation Theory Facts Will Blow Your Mind!

Many of you have heard the concept that we are living in a computer simulation. But what does simulation theory really look like from a practical viewpoint? In this video I want to show you that and talk about some of the finer points of simulation theory while I’m at it. Many of the simulation theory concepts in this video come from the work of MBT. I’ll be stating some ideas that may sound a little confusing, but I’m going to clarify each one. So please watch the whole video and give it a like if you enjoyed it. Thank you!

consciousness is fundamental and everything else is virtual. You’ve probably heard me say this before on my channel so I won’t spend too much time talking about it. But basically consciousness, which is your awareness, your intelligence, your memories, is the only real thing in existence. All else, including your body, your phone, the earth, and even the universe, does not exist on an existential level. It’s only virtual and exists as ones and zeroes in the hard drive that simulates our reality. What this basically means, is that your consciousness is not based in this reality. It exists elsewhere and is simply logged onto the data stream that renders our world. If the data stream was turned off, you would have no experience of your body and this reality. Instead, you would automatically tune into a different virtual reality. The same thing happens to us all at death. This can be a difficult concept to grasp, but it’s absolutely necessary to continue on as all the other ideas are based on it. The second big concept is that a virtual reality needs a consciousness to be rendered. If there is no consciousness, the data stream cannot be interpreted. It’s kind of like the old riddle, if a tree falls in the forest but nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound. The answer is no. This virtual reality only exists in the minds of the players. The server that simulates our world sends out data streams. It doesn’t send rocks, cars, roads. It sends a data stream of binary code. Consciousness interprets that data stream into this reality. The computer that simulates us, which I’ll hereafter refer to as the LCS, doesn’t compute a house. It only computes the dots that make up the house. Nothing can be in our reality that is not in the data stream. Just like in a video game. It’s about information and there is no objective reality. This is another big concept to wrap your head around. But really the ancients have been saying this all along. The Buddhists and Hindus called it maya, an illusory world where things appear to be real, but they are not what they seem. By the way, you may have to listen to this video a few times to comprehend the material. On first listen, you might intellectually understand, but it takes being exposed to it a few times to visualize and assimilate it, so don’t be afraid to rewatch the video after you complete it. The next mind-blowing concept is that once something is rendered, it becomes part of our history and is solidified. Until that time, it’s just a probability. Tom Campbell, the creator of MBT, says that our universe is a top-down probability simulation not a bottom’s up deterministic simulation. What this means is that the future is not written and it’s simply based on a probability distribution. This essentially means that anything is possible. And this is because are living in a virtual reality where the laws of physics can be rewritten or broken any time by the LCS if it deems necessary. However, don’t mistake possible for probable. The chances that you’ll flap your arms and fly away is highly unlikely, probably one in trillions, which explains why it has never happened. However, in a virtual reality, anything can happen so there is still a possibility for it. The next odd concept ties into one that we already mentioned. And this is that nothing in our reality is rendered until a consciousness looks at it. For example, your brain is only virtual. It does not store or process anything. The brain does not need to be rendered because it is not seen.

  • Is The Solar Eclipse Evidence That Were Living In A Simulation? | Answers With Joe

Today's total solar eclipse is more than just an amazing sight - it's one of the most improbable events in the universe. Here's why.
    Support me on Patreon!

Follow me at all my places!

    Science of coincidences:

    Large-number coincidences

The number of factors involved to make this happen is astronomical. Pun intended.

I propose the Scott equation for solar eclipses.

Because I want my name on sumpin dammit.

    N = nr * fm * fp * na * L

nr is the number of rocky planets in the galaxy.

And I’m cutting out the gas giants for 2 reasons, one, in order for a shadow to fall on something you need a surface to fall on, and gas giants don’t really have a surface to speak of.

fm stands for the fraction of those rocky planets with a moon.

I’ve talked before about how rare and special our moon is, I mean just in our own solar system, only one other rocky planet has moons, and that’s Mars, which has two moons, Phobos and Deimos. But they’re really more like captured asteroids.

fp is the fraction of rocky planets with moons whose orbits cross the same plane as the planet and the star.

If the orbit of the moon never brings it between the planet and the star, no eclipse.

But the big one is na, or the number of moons that fit that angular alignment required to get a total solar eclipse.

In the case of Earth, the magic number is 400. The moon’s diameter is 400 times smaller than the sun and the sun is 400 times further away. How rare is this?

There is one other moon in our solar system that does this and that’s Jupiter’s moon Callisto due to its large size and vast distance from Jupiter.

Callisto is 179.3x smaller than the sun, and the sun is 179 times further from Jupiter.

The last variable, L is for length of time.

Drake included time as a variable because it’s logical to assume that the amount of time a species could be putting signals into space is finite.

I’m including it for the same reason.

Because the moon moves away from the Earth at a rate of 1.6 inches per year. Which means eventually, our moon won’t fully cover the sun anymore and it’ll be an annular eclipse.

And this slow progression away from the planet should be true of most moons due to orbital dynamics, so there is a finite length of time that a total solar eclipse would be visible.

How is it possible that one planet could experience not one but two utterly improbable but completely unrelated phenomena at the same time?

Maybe it’s more evidence for the rare-Earth hypothesis.

The idea that the conditions in place to create Earth and all life on it is so impossibly rare that we’re likely the only life in the universe.

Which slides into the anthropic principle which states that life on Earth is inevitable because the universe is compelled to create conscious life in order to observe itself.

This is the strong anthropic principle, the weak anthropic principal kinda goes the opposite direction, saying that we’re not that special but think we’re special thanks to selection bias.

  • David Chalmers - Are We Living in a Simulation?

Could our entire universe have been created by a super-intelligent species, just like computer scientists write software to simulate chemical reactions or the weather? It may sound silly, but with the exponential increase in computing power, it could be conceivable? And if for humans, why not for others? If our universe were a simulation, how could we tell?

  • Why We Might Be Living In A COMPUTER SIMULATION

What if we are all living in a simulation? Whether we’re someone’s lab experiment in a Petri dish, or being played as characters in a computer simulation, there are multiple theories about how our world may not be what it seems. In the movie The Matrix, upon figuring out the truth about his existence, Neo was given a choice - a red pill would allow him to continue on, facing the harsh truth of reality, while the blue pill would allow him to live in blissful ignorance. Which pill would you have chosen?

Famous figures in science and technology, such as Neil deGrasse Tyson and Elon Musk, have expressed that there is a good chance that the world we live in is a simulated reality. However, some physicists have conducted experiments and claimed that this is not a possibility. So, are these ideas just conspiracy theories and can we rule it out completely? Maybe not just yet…

  • Is it all just a Simulation? with Isaac Arthur

    What is the Simulation Theory?
    Is Artificial Intelligence Possible?

John Michael Godier in a discussion with Isaac Arthur host of Science and Futurism with Isaac Arthur, discuss what the anthropic principle is. As well as the what a Boltzmann Brain is, the idea of a single brain spontaneously forming in a void and dreaming all of us. They also discuss Nick Bostrom simulation theory, specifically the ancestor simulation theory and if there could be any possibility to an alien simulation theory. They also discuss Roko's Basilisk, but we won't go further than that here, you'll just have to watch.

  • Are We Living In A Simulation? | Big Questions with Carlo Rovelli

Carlo Rovelli's new book, Helgoland is available now:

Helgoland is the story of quantum physics and its bright young founders who were to become some of the most famous Nobel winners. It is a celebration of youthful rebellion and intellectual revolution. It is a transformative journey. Here Carlo Rovelli, a master storyteller and influential scientist, illuminates competing interpretations and offers his own original theory: the 'relational' interpretation of quantum mechanics, where the world is fundamentally made of relations and events rather than permanent substances. Where we, as every other thing around us, exist in our interactions with one another, in a never-ending game of mirrors.

  • Are We Living in a Simulation? | Oleg Maslov | TEDxSPbU

What are the chances that we are artificial intelligence beings living in a virtual world? Oleg lays out evidence that suggests that those chances are much higher than we believe.

  • The Simulation Hypothesis | Rizwan Virk | Talks at Google

2019 marks the 20th anniversary of what is arguably one of the best Science fiction movies ever made - The Matrix. It popularized an ancient idea that the world we live in may not be real. In other words, our world is just an illusion, a simulation -- a video game.

So, Are we really living in a video game?
Game industry veteran Rizwan (Riz) Virk believes this could be true.

Rizwan (“Riz”) Virk is a successful entrepreneur, angel investor, bestselling author, video game industry pioneer, and indie film producer. Virk currently runs Play Labs @ MIT ( a startup accelerator for playful technologies held on campus at the MIT Game Lab and Bayview Labs (
Virk’s books include: Startup Myths and Models: Secrets They Don't Teach You at Stanford Business School, from Columbia University Press (2020), Zen Entrepreneurship: Walking the Path of the Career Warrior (2013), and Treasure Hunt: Follow Your Inner Clues to Find True Success (2017).

Virk’s video games have been played by millions, including Tap Fish, and games based on TV shows like Penny Dreadful and Grimm. Virk has been an investor in many video game companies, including Telltale Games (creator of narrative games based on The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones), Disruptor Beam (creator of Star Trek: Timelines game), Pocket Gems, Tapjoy,, and Discord.

Movies like the Matrix aren’t actually the only place where the concept of us being in an elaborate simulation exists. Imagine everything we perceive around us is nothing more than an elaborate script of code: ones and zeros. Elon Musk said in twenty sixteen that he believes there is a one in a billion chance we are not in a simulation. So is it possible that the world we take for reality that surrounds us is not a real as we perceive it to be?

    The Boltzmann Brain

    The Oh My God Particle

The idea that our reality is a simulation is not as far-fetched as you may think. Many philosophers, scientists and tech-billionaires are seriously considering not just the possibility but the high probability that our civilization may be a program being run by another, more advanced alien civilization.

  • Is Our Reality Just a Simulation? | Tatarit Yensuang | TEDxYouth@ISBangkok

In a world where our technological progress is continually multiplying at a pace we cannot predict, it is difficult to tell where our future is heading. In a span of just a few years, our technology now enables us to simulate complex worlds that are nearly impossible to distinguish from reality. What would these simulations be like in 50 years? 500 years? Could it be possible that someone, somewhere in the future has created a simulation that is our very own reality? This talk explores the possibility that we are living in a simulation created by a much more advanced civilization, but more importantly, whether it matters to us at all. Tatarit (Mod) Yensuang is a 16-year-old junior studying at International School Bangkok. Alongside his leadership and engagement in many school clubs and activities, such as the Student Communications Group, Make a Difference club, and Giving Hands Project, he is also in lead of several tech-oriented clubs at ISB, including Initiative Technology, Software Development club, as well as the Technology Council due to his profound interest in technology and the significant impacts it has on our modern world.
