  • Wild Horses ... Mustangs of Oregon

    13:57

About the video: I wanted to do a whole year in review, but realized that would be a bit long, so creating segments of the year, and here are a few moments on the mustang ranges- video clips spliced together in August and September. On these trips, we got to continue to follow along the journeys of our longtime mustang friends we've been watching and learning about for nearly ten years. We also got to meet new faces and learn about them. Looking forward to seeing them all on their journeys this coming year, as well as meet new wild faces!
Now, as a disclaimer- I am a photographer and by no means do I claim to be a videographer. My videos are rough, and dont even use a tripod when I flip the video switch on. While photographing after I get the shots I want, will then suddenly toggle to video- and my big foot-long telephoto lens in the slightest of breezes is very unsteady... now add coffee and mustang excitement, and it makes me all too aware I need to slow down and some and use proper video equipment in the future LOL ... But for now this is what you guys get- since I can't take you all out there with me, I figure you may still like my sudden video-thought moments showing our amazing wild horses in motion through my glass- sort of like bringing you all out there with me.

Enjoy. And if you have little ones, sit them with you and tell them- YES, we do still have wild untouched mustangs roaming on vast and wild ranges out west where eagles glade and sunsets set the skies ablaze as far as the eyes can see.

Keep the WILD in our WEST and our WEST WILD~

  • BLM Wild Mustang & Burro Adoption & Auction: Bring Home Your Own Wild Horse -Looking New Project

    19:14

We went to experience our first BLM Wild Mustang & Burro Adoption in Kellyville, Oklahoma. It is a
Wild Horse and Donkey Auction that the Bureau of Land Management puts on all over the United States. It is part of their Wild Horse and Burro Program. The wild horses and wild donkeys live in Heard Management areas all over the U.S. It is part of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. All the wild horses and burro's we see are from herd management areas in Oklahoma, Wyoming, Nevada, and Utah. They have very safe and strict rules to qualify to Bid on these animals at the auction. Shelter, fencing and food are just a few. The BLM, the government owns these beautiful mustangs and burros, you are the caretaker through adoption. After a year with live welfare on home site checks and Vet records and signatures, you will get the owner's title to the horse or donkey. The animals have Freeze Marks which identifies them as property of the U.S. government. It is painless, using a cold iron, chilled in liquid nitrogen. The hair grows in white. It is a very beautiful identification symbol #AdoptWildMustang #WildBurro #BLM

  • Government will now pay you to adopt wild horses

    5:19

The government is taking a unique approach to control the record-breaking population of wild horses. There are an estimated 88,000 of them across the country. The American icons are protected by a law passed by Congress in 1971. Now there is a new effort to help them find a home. Nikki Battiste reports.

  • Americans will soon have a $5 billion wild horse problem

    4:45

In September’s roundup of the Onaqui wild horses in Tooele County’s west desert, the BLM removed 46 animals from Dugway Proving Ground at the request of the military. Other horses were removed from the fringes of the herd management boundaries.

The Deseret News spent eight months interviewing wildlife experts, rangeland ecologists, ranchers, cowboys, rural politicians, scientists and reviewing records with the Bureau of Land Management, which has oversight of the range, and lawsuits to understand this costly problem and what can be done about it.

  • Wild Mustangs of the American West

    15:40

Hope you subscribe to my channel for more adventures on the mustang trails!
15 minutes of moments take you to two Oregon Herd Management Areas. First through the Stinkingwater HMA east of Burns, and then to the sSteens HMA for the remainder of the video.
This trip was about horses in the HMA's outback, and though we were familiar with some, there were many we did not know. Very hot first two days, one of which was 92 degrees with miles of hiking, and then turning to severe winds that stirred up a dust storm, so thick it obscured the mountain and triggered an asthmatic response in Alice and had to cover our mouths with damp bandannas. Though I had a monopod for my camera, the shaky moments were just having a difficult time with steadying the camera in the heavy wind gusts.

Highlights for me on this trip: Catching a very brief glimpse of a black stallion between the junipers watching us intently- who we were sure was likely Voodoo! We tried to find him again, but lost him among the heavy stand of juniper trees. Such a brief sighting, neither of us got photos, but how thrilled we were! He looked at us briefly but intently. Turned his head and whinnied and poof! Disappeared! We searched and then followed up high on a rimrock looking down into the juniper forest hoping to capture another glimpse and idea of his direction of travel. We did see one of his grown sons- Mojo, which you'll see in the vid.

The other highlight was seeing Centaur! Some of you may remember last August 2019 the young cremello... almost white stallion, who befriended a domestic mule gone loose. This is how Centaur got his range name that trip- bc of his friendship with a half horse half donkey :) . The mule wasn't with him, so not sure if he'd been finally captured by his owner who loved him very much... or if he's still out there roaming the high country with a 'pack' of other mules LOL.

Special thanks to Opus Moon Music for the beautiful song Wild Horses and Wild Flowers.
Thank you to long time friend Alice McCammon for roaming with me!

Lets keep the WILD in our WEST... and our WEST WILD!

    4:47

Kiger Mustangs of Oregon | Wild Horses Documentary YouTube & Netflix video.

The Path of the Kiger Mustangs Horse is the documentary I made while I was searching for ways to understand horses

The Kiger Mustang was developed in the late 1970s. The Kiger Mustang was created under the BLM wild horse program under the careful watch of E. Ron Harding, William (Bill) Phillips, and Josh Warburton.

The basis of the Kiger Mustang is the Spanish Type Mustang, which are still found in small pockets throughout the Oregon desert in the southeast corner of the state. In 1979, priority for dun factor and particular Spanish traits were mandated for those horses that would become the Kiger.

The Kiger Mustang is generally a medium size horse ranging from 13.2 hands to 16 hands, with a preferred height of 14-15.2 hands.

Dun Marking factors: Dorsal, leg barring, lacing, cobwebbing on face, mask on face, fishbone/sawtooth on dorsal, eye bars, arm bars, hock barring, ventral dorsal, fawn in ears, black outline on ears, barring on back of ears, bi-coloring in mane/tail.

    Other Characteristics: Chest hair banding.

  • Extremes - 2017 Wild Mustangs of SE Oregon April

    27:19

April 2017 trip Time: About 28 minutes.
This trip Extremes we experienced - from extreme weather to extreme emotions, we felt it all out there. It is safe for all viewers. If you like roaming those mustang trails with me, I hope you subscribe for free and click on the bell next to that beautiful red button for future videos I share- thank you!
This one goes down in the books as the Trip of Extremes.
From new foals to loss, we saw it all. Even the weather had it's wild unpredictable moments being spring on the high desert. Parts of the HMA are closed off due to Sagegrouse clear into mid May, and so we spent more time hiking to areas- miles and miles... and uphill both ways it seemed ???? .
The weather was rather fickle- trying not to trip over lava rock, hoofing it up hill while less than gracefully removing layers as the sun beat down- no time to waste when we have miles to cover. But as extremes have it, as soon as I shed the layers, the cold wind began to blow, blowing in a large storm cell right overhead, and started hailing.

Disclaimer: I am not a videographer, just toggled on my camera between vids and stills, so not a steady video- no tripod, on coffee, and excited, with sudden bursts remembering to get video.

And if you have kids, Grandkids, or the GreatGrands, sit them with you and tell them- Yes, we do still have wild horses running on spacious lands out west belonging to the public - and that these icons and symbols for freedom are also their heritage, and they in turn, are the mustang's future guardians.

Wild horses- Wild dreams. Our goal had been to return home early enough to avoid the windy drive through the Cascade mountain range at dark.... but when roaming wild, common sense rarely prevails as planned- real time becomes a hazy after thought. In this case, about the time we should have left and turn ol' Black for home on the other side of Oregon.... we were sitting at a waterhole when a couple bands came down to water. Sweet, we thought. But not long after, it was band after band after band.... And just when we thought it was the last band and getting ready to pick up our packs and gear, we'd hear a whinny in the distance and the whinny got closer, so we waited, and more bands came down. We saw a whole congregation of family bands and bachelor bands- the whole Hollywood herd and more by chance came down to the very same waterhole we - little ol' us- happened to be at. ... all simply by a wildhair's chance. We sat under a juniper shade watching colorful wild horses come down the sage-covered hill and splash, play, argue- mustangs of all kinds.. babies, mares, fillies, colts, band stallions, bachelor stallions, even rogue stallions. Watching all their interactions as over the afternoon as they converged on this small waterhole- priceless. Time was meaningless to have to adhere to, but time tells the best stories.

I returned home around midnight, sunburned to where my face felt like a furnace, peeling shoulders, bruised toenails, tired feet, and a dusty truck inside and out which I didn't recognize..... the proof to myself, that this was not just a wild dream. July 2017 Album in progress, stay tuned for more photos.

  • Burns-Oregon Wild Horses awaiting adoption or freedom to be granted at risk to be sold to slaughter

    4:28

Love Wild Horses®© Reporting: Photographer, Public Relations & Nevada Field Manager, Jeanne Bencich-Nations:
PART TWO 800 Wild Horses are being held in captivity and are in danger of being sold to slaughter. The BLM rounded up these horses last Fall.
They were unjustly only going to return 66 horses back to the Warm Springs HMA, which unreasonably, they claim is the appropriate management level, the number of horses that the BLM will allow to live upon 435,000 acres. The BLM has yet to return any of these sacred herds back to their and our public land.
It is inhumane to hold such free-spirited animals as captives, behind bars, in barren wastelands.
    INHUMANE BARBARIC EXPERIMENTATION:
BLM in Hines, Oregon, has tried three times now to get permission from the government to perform these dangerous, life-threatening experiments on our wild mares without success. But they are still trying, so we need your help to stop this proposal permanently.
They have had two veterinarian teaching colleagues turn them down, they did not want to be a part of the cruel, barbaric experiments on our mares.
The BLM wants to manage wild mares by doing surgical ovariectomy via colpotomy experiments, which is a very invasive procedure that could cause mares to bleed to death in the process, along with many other complications.
THERE IS STILL TIME TO CONTACT YOUR SENATORS:
Tell them not to allow any funding for the 2020 BLM fiscal year budget For THE PATH FORWARD.
Please join us here Be Their Voice To Survive & Thrive, Love Wild Horses Today!

Help us place these innocent gorgeous horses into safe forever homes (to save them from risk &v sale to slaughter)
and to please support our work and mission to re-wild BLM captured horses, today!
We need your help and hope these precious wild horses, touch your hearts as they have ours and move all who see this to help us save them.
We can't do it alone, the horses need all of us to unite to save them. The music is by Ray LaMontagne Wild Horses and is not intended for any commercial use or any copyright infringement.

  • MUSTANGS of our WILD WEST October 2017

    16:15

From snow to brilliant blue skies and everything in-between, but no matter when we have incredible wild horses in our midst. Headed to the range in the morning, it rained hard at home in western Oregon, but a winter wonderland at the Cascade mountain range summit crossing over it to get the east side. Dropping down from the summit- quite nice with varied shades of spotty clouds dropping rain curtains and casting cloud shadows.
The weather matters not, when we've got wild mustangs in our midst.

  • Wild MUSTANGS, Chasing Wild Horses and Comets

    12:44

    2020 July The Comet Trip
Out in SE Oregon to see the mustangs during the comet NeoWise which this time would be visible in the NW skies after the sun set and the western sky was dark enough, we watched the weather closely and knew it to be a doozy with temps in the mid 90's. There was no moon so the stars and the comet were very visible and in our camp chairs it felt like we had the best seat in the house. But boy, I don't think I've ever seen the stars, Milky Way, and planets so bright. Alice and I as we were sitting in our chairs enjoying the night sky and planning the next day, decided then and there that the next new foal we find and hasn't been seen before would be named Comet to celebrate this amazing celestial even coming around every approx 7,000 years. So we set out on our mission the following day... having two vehicles parked each on opposite ends of our cross-country trek starting at one and ending at another. Her fit bit logged 14-15 miles, which included much zigging and zagging, crossing river canyons going from bands spread out by miles in this region. Read the full journal on my page Mustang Meg/July 2020.
I am not a videographer, so my apologies for the unpolished footage, as much of the camera work is handheld, and quickly toggled from stills to vids, often dealing with winds which cause a shake or wobble.
A big Thank You to Jeanne Kuhns for allowing me to use her music.. she wrote and sang the song Edge of the World in the video.

Wild horses are up for adoption for as little as $25 in northern California. The U.S. Forest Service is facilitating the purchasing of the animals, who are believed to be descendants of domesticated horses. But, the animals come with a few requirements that not everyone can fulfill. John Blackstone reports.

  • BLM Round Up of 1,400 Wild Horses, Beatys Butte, southern Oregon, Nov. 7, 2015

    3:36

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently conducting the largest roundup of wild horses for Fiscal Year 2015-2016 ... 1,400 wild horses are targeted for removal from the Beatys Butte Herd Management Area in southern Oregon. The roundup is being conducted at the request of the Beaty Butte Grazing Association -- the local ranchers who run their PRIVATE livestock on our PUBLIC lands. After the roundup these public lands ranchers will be allowed to run more cows in this same area which is federally-designated wild horse habitat. After the roundup, the BLM will leave behind just 100 wild horses on more than 600+ square miles and will turn around and allow the public lands (welfare) ranchers to run many times more cattle. Apparently a handful of local ranchers have more say about how our public lands are managed than the majority of Americans. Thousands of Americans urged the BLM to cancel this massive roundup -- those voices were ignored.

Have you ever traveled to see the wild horses in northern Utah? The herd consists of almost 200 wild horses. You can watch them fight for dominance and run around chasing each other.
