Wild Journey - Chile: Country of Contrasts | Wildlife Documentary

Watch 'On the Wild Coasts of Patagonia' here:

A wild country. A long and narrow strip of life, where our team will share with you images never before seen of the more than 4500 kilometers of landscapes, valleys, forests and deserts of Chile.

In this intimate and classic journey we are privileged witnesses of magical moments of nature, from a cougar mother playing tenderly with her cubs on the Patagonian steppes, to the short lived desert flowering where, thanks to this unique event, different creatures modify their habits, taking advantage of the opportunity that the flowers give them.
We will also get up close with the Degu, a beautiful rodent with a brush tail. We will discover the intimacy of a Vampire bat cave, and we will see blue whales under the waters of our rolling seas.

A small sample of the enormous natural beauty of this country where day after day life tries to find food, protection and reproduction.

The Baltic Coast: Wild Animal Paradise | Free Wildlife Documentary

Watch The Baltics: Untouched Animal Paradise:

This documentary presents the natural beauty of the shifting sand dunes of the Curonian Spit, the romantic beaches of the Latvian Baltic Sea and the island worlds of Estonia. Time and again, this deserted and almost untouched nature fascinates. In the winter, ringed seals give birth to their young on the pack ice. In the spring, Konik wild horse stallions fight fierce battles amongst themselves, while colourful European rollers fly through the dune forests. Lynxes wander through the coastal forests and in the orchid meadows turncoats and hoopoes find more than enough food. On the islands around Saaremaa in Estonia, grey seals hunt for fish. They share the archipelago with Europe’s largest tern, the Caspian tern.

  • Tropical Natural Paradise: Panama & Costa Rica | Free Documentary Nature

    44:40

Whoever wants to experience South America as a nature paradise in a small area, should explore Costa Rica. Almost half of the country is covered by rain forest. Numerous animal species are to be found here like the White faced Capuchin, colourful parrots like the Macaw, Veruga Parakeets and Tapirs.

Also lizards from primeval times have their habitat in this region of the planet. The small central American nation not only fascinates with a rich fauna and flora but also with a wonder world under water. Insights into the fascinating world of the jungle show examples like the epiphytes that make their way to the sky at the expense of her host plant.

A view into the culture of the Indian inhabitants of the rain forest of course does not come too briefly either. A diving excursion through the ocean waters of Cocos Island is the highlight of the journey. The spectator will get flesh crawl while watching hundreds of dangerous hammerhead sharks gliding past the camera.

Alpine Lakes - An Enchanting Underwater World | Nature Documentary

This is a nature documentary, which leads us into the fascinating world of deep mountain lakes. We conquer ice palaces of unsuspected beauty. In the freezers, in which elves, fairies and mountain trolls once did their mischief, we move, using a special breathing technique and with special cameras in search of nocturnal hunters, whose eyes are equipped with residual light amplifying receptors.

A nature documentary, recorded in 2k-cinema format with precision cameras, such as super slow motion, time lapse, residual light and remote-controlled cams.

  • Chile A Wild Journey Trailer

    1:23

Chile: A Wild Journey is an eight-part series travelling across sky, land and sea that takes us around this long and unexplored country in search of the most fascinating wildlife. In addition to the famous puma and blue whale, more than 80 species of animals were recorded by this team, some of them practically unknown to science and to the rest of the world.

  • The Swiss Alps: Wild Animal Paradise | Free Documentary Nature

    51:25

Gentle, green meadows, rugged rock faces, mysterious lakes, dense forests, tall mountains, low-lying river deltas, quietly meandering mountain streams and smack dab in the middle, a unique fauna - THIS is Switzerland! We trace the elementary power of nature and present animals and plants in landscapes that have hardly ever been touched by mankind. Switzerland is an alpine country, but it is also Europe's surge tank. Rivers such as the Rhine and the Rhone have their sources here. Glaciers, crevasses, icy cold caves and the underwater dome of the Verzasca are the unusual settings we chose for this film. We meet with rare, selected animal species and present their behavioural patterns, such as the Swiss or Arven jay, the lynx and albino catfish. Cold, wind, snow and extreme locations demand adaptation that make us marvel.

  • Safari of my Life - Wildlife Photography Documentary with Klaus Tiedge

    1:3:46

A film capturing not only what it's like to be on safari in Kenya but also telling a tale of bravery in the face of adversity. Life is too short not to do exactly what you want.

In 2017 Klaus Tiedge embarked on a rather ambitious journey to go to Kenya in 2018 and make a film.
This “film idea” was something that Klaus had been thinking about doing for a few years already as a way to challenge himself to do something more than “just” photography. He hired film editor, Dean Paarman, to start the process by turning his existing footage into short videos for social media.

After receiving shocking news that Klaus was diagnosed with life threatening cancer, the idea of a film turned from an idea into a must-do goal.
Life is too short not to do exactly what you want.

Klaus underwent a severe surgery in 2017 and while in recovery decided that when he was out of the hospital, the planning would begin. True to his word Klaus spoke to his film editor Dean Paarman and proposed he come with to help make this project a reality.

By February 2018 only final touches were required before the two of them would set off to film “The Safari of a Lifetime”.

An epic month of adventure, blood, sweat and tears ensued. Klaus’s Family joined them for the last week to make it one of the most memorable safari trips of all time.

(The film also includes some of the last footage of Big Tim - the Amboseli Elephant - which sadly passed away earlier in 2020)

Filmed & Edited by Dean Paarman @Travelvids

Black Storks: A Surprising Comeback in Germany | Free Wildlife Documentary

Nature is a constant source of surprise, also of a positive manner; as, although animals and plants disappear from our landscapes on an almost daily basis, there are returnees. The black stork is one of them. The large and colourful bird, known only to a few, has reclaimed German forests. Secretly and silently. The black stork lives as a recluse, in contrast with its cousin, the white stork, which, as a true synanthropic species, enjoys the proximity of humans.
The film represents an adventure in the forest of the black storks. The concealed life of these birds has never before been documented in such detail. Unique footage recorded in state-of-the-art HD technology complete with elaborate sound-editing, creates a real nature experience which is a pleasure for both the eyes and the ears. This animal documentary for the whole family is as entertaining as it is exciting. Discover the unknown world of these fascinating birds and join us in the forest of the black storks.

Although the lake is under severe pressure, a Kenyan born raptor scientist Dr. Munir Virani tries to explain why the eagles are doing so well and how to save their precious home. Nonetheless, the threats faced by Lake Naivasha from invasive species introduced into the lake are great and the film also profiles the people working to find a solution to the lake’s environmental crisis.

  • Antarctica: A message from another planet | DW Documentary

    42:26

The world's major powers agree: the resources of Antarctica should be exploited peacefully. They have promised to promote peace and scientific research in Antarctica, and to protect its environment. But is this spirit real, or just a lot of talk?

This documentary features interviews with researchers, activists, diplomats, and military personnel from Spain, Russia, Portugal, Chile, Argentina, and the United States. There's been much debate over how to share control of resources in Antarctica, which is the world's oldest ecosystem. Critics say that behind the scenes, a game of high-stakes poker is underway. Could this competition end in armed conflict? Or will Antarctica serve as a model for peaceful international cooperation? This film addresses these complicated issues with in-depth analysis, accompanied by magnificent images of the Antarctic landscape. The documentary's soundtrack was composed by Javier Weyler, former drummer of the Welsh rock band, the Stereophonics.

Northern Woods is a homage and a cultural-historical consideration at the same time. The film portrays the German/Northern European forest and shows its development from primeval to intensively managed forest. It was once inhabited by wild animals such as wolves, bears, eagles, deer and musk ox. Its cultivation was carried out by Celts and Teutons. Today the forest is often a victim of environmental degradation and overexploitation.

  • Full Documentary | Georgia & The Great Caucasus

    51:58

Full documentary about Georgia, this country is located in the Caucasus, along the black sea. It is a country with European vocation and western spirit with great landscape and cultural variety.

Georgia. The secret in the Caucasus
Georgia has protected its artistic heritage and been able to maintain the vibrancy of its unique traditions. It has conserved a biodiversity greater than that of some continents, and has a magnetism which draws people back to visit over and over again. Although as small as Switzerland, Georgia is big in all aspects; a progressive nation, European in attitude and Western in spirit; a real Caucasian country with the joy of the Mediterranean.
The vast vineyards of the Eastern Region of Kakheti, home to the largest wineries in the nation, are a clear illustration of this passion. In Georgia, there are a considerable number of grape varieties, more than anywhere else in the world.
In Kakheti, almost everything revolves around wine. Proof of this is the XVI century wine cellar in Velistsikhe, in which the traditional “kvevri” are still used: clay barrels buried underground that maintain a constant temperature to ensure optimal fermentation.

Tbilisi (tiflis), founded as a fortress-city in the V century, is the nation’s capital, its largest city and has been admired by famous people such as Leon Tolstoy and Alexander Dumas. Every corner of Tbilisi is quite captivating. Its bewitching spell is cast over the whole of this safe and friendly metropolis in which guests are considered a “gift from God”. At the end of the harvest, colourful folkloric celebrations take place in the wine making areas.
The fertile Valley of Alazani, in the Region of Kakheti, is renowned because of the excellence of its grapes and because it is the source of outstanding wines such as Khindzmarauli and Gurdjani.

Sighnaghi is one of the smallest towns in the country, but it has the second longest wall in the world, after China, also known as “the city of love” is also celebrated for its renowned grape harvest. The Tusheti National Reserve is one of the most beautiful areas of Georgia. Vashlovani National Park, in the south-eastern part of the country, has a semi-desert ecosystem and is an excellent example of the varied bio-diversity to be found in Georgia. One of the 13 Assyrian Holy Fathers who arrived in Georgia in order to strengthen Christianity, David Gareja, is buried here, and on his tomb there is a stone that symbolizes the one that the distinguished Patriarch brought in his journey from the Holy Land.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park is in the centre of the country and it constitutes 1% of the territory of Georgia. Borjomi-Kharagauli, surrounded by the magical atmosphere of the Lower Caucasus, is the most visited Park in Georgia and has a large number of recreational activities on offer. In 1830, it was rumoured that springs from the Borjomi-Kharagauli Nature Reserve contained healing properties, and 60 years later, the first bottling plant of the now world-famous Borjomi water, was created. It is unique because of its naturally mineralized hydro carbonated sodium and therapeutic qualities.

Shatili is located on the narrow pass of Arghuni, on the northern slope of the Great Caucasus. Sixty percent of Georgian territory are mountains. There a lots of fantastic opportunities for all kind of people who like nature, who like mountains. There are five peaks in the Caucasus in Georgia over 5000 meters, which gives really great opportunities for the amateur climbers. Apart from mountaineering these mountains give brilliant opportunities just for those who like nature, so you can do two or three weeks continuous tracks in a totally wild environment, plus there are lots of opportunities for rafting, canoeing, canyoning or any mountain activities. Georgia has two ski resorts: Bakuriani, to the south of Borjomi, at an altitude of 1,700 metres has conditions that are ideal for family skiing. Gudauri, in the Upper Caucasus, at 2,000 metres, has steep slopes which will satisfy the most extreme athletes.

King of the Elephants | Wildlife Documentary

Watch 'Wildlife Africa & Asia: Elephants' here:

Zambia's beautiful Lower Zambezi Valley is the setting for the story of Big Boy, an elephant no one who knew him will ever forget!

With impressive ivory and an incredibly inquisitive nature, this iconic elephant bull embodied the spirit of wild Africa and captured the hearts of safari operators Boet and Chris Liebenberg, who spent years living alongside Big Boy in their camp on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river.
Big Boy was a gentle giant, who spent his time watching his human friends and learning from them, quietly observing the comings and goings of these strange upright creatures, until one tragic day, when the greed of humankind and the lust for ivory changed everything...

Big Boy: An Elephant's Story is a touching tale of triumph over adversity, a story of courage in the face of danger and how one elephant touched the lives of all who live in one of Africa's last great wilderness areas, giving rise to a pioneering conservation project which has helped to eradicate the scourge of poaching.
The incredible scenery of the location, the magnificent animals which call it home and the need to conserve and protect Africa's beautiful wild places are captured in this moving, first-time documentary by award-winning South African writer Sharon van Wyk

  • By train across Sri Lanka | DW Documentary

    42:31

Asia’s most beautiful railway line? The “Main Line” cuts through tea plantations and jungle, then passes Buddhist temples and relicts of the British Empire.

In the 19th century the British built a railway in what was then their colony of Ceylon. Their idea was to transport goods such as tea from the highlands to the port of Colombo. Today it’s mainly only locals and tourists who use the so-called Main Line. The route is considered one of the most picturesque in the whole of Asia.

Our trip takes us from the capital, Colombo, to Ella in the highlands. Our first stop is one of the country’s largest elephant orphanages. And then on to Kandy, the former capital of the Singhalese kingdom. The city is home to the famous Temple of the Tooth, which is said to house the Buddha’s top left canine. The train then winds its way further up into the highlands. We watch tea pickers at work and go to a tea factory to discover where the aroma comes from. Nuwara Eliya is Sri Lanka’s highest town at an altitude of almost 1900 meters, where a racecourse still brings the colonial era back to life. The stations have also retained their own colonial charm: in 1901, a signaling system was set up to make the long journey safer. And those suffering from the altitude can catch their breath at the final stop, the spa in Ella.

  • Whitetip Reef Sharks: Deadly Nocturnal Predators | Free Documentary Nature

    51:03

With the aid of modern technology, we reveal the unknown behaviour of some unusual species of shark: lemon sharks and their white-tip reef counterparts.

Our film trip begins in the Bahamas. To be more precise: in the turquoise-blue waters of the Grand Bahama Bank, in an exactly fixed location. In the spring, 70 - 80 pregnant lemon sharks arrive here. This huge shark population was first discovered just a few years ago by shark researcher, Professor Sam Gruber.
Many of the females are tired and rest on the seabed. Pregnant tiger sharks swim in the midst of this group. Without any protection whatsoever, our cameramen shoot their footage, surrounded by sharks and succeed in capturing images hitherto unseen.

We continue our journey to Gainesville, Florida, to meet Gordon Hubbell, the leading shark denture expert with the world’s largest shark denture collection. He knows everything about the evolutionary history of the lemon sharks, in addition to those of the white-tip reef variety off Cocos Island, Costa Rica. Here, we encounter large schools of fish, unprecedented numbers of stingrays, as well as hammerhead sharks. However, it is the white-tip reef sharks that make the biggest impression. Their performance begins late at night. Marauding, they patrol in large groups through the reefs and hunt everything that moves. Scales and dead prey fish float above the reef - a welcoming change of diet for the ubiquitous barracudas.

Blue Realm - Episode 9: Reefs of Steel
Around the globe, thousands of decommissioned naval vessels rot in dockyards. What can you do with these toxic time bombs? One solution is to clean them well, blow them up and sink them! Providing shelter and breeding grounds, countless fish and invertebrates colonize steel hulls.
In the Cayman Islands, the USS Kittiwake met a watery grave and quickly transformed into a vibrant artificial reef. In the Florida Keys, dozens of purposely sunk ships are a beacon to marine life, and to scuba divers. It seems like a win-win-win situation - for the environment, for divers and for cash strapped governments. But supporters face tough opposition on many fronts. After years of struggle, Canada's newest artificial reef project - the HMCS Annapolis, is nearing completion. But will protesters get their way and scuttle the sinking?

  • Rewilding Argentina: A journey to help nature heal | Talk to Al Jazeera: In the Field

    25:36

The Ibera wetlands are a 1.3 million-hectare (3.2 million-acre) natural reserve in northeastern Argentina. But in recent years, wildlife in the area has suffered because of rapid development, industrialised agriculture and uncontrolled cattle grazing.

Argentina is one of the world’s top food producers. Beef and grain are some of its main exports. And now, as the country stretches its agricultural capabilities even further, several conservation strategies are being tried out and, it seems, some of them are working.

On this edition of Talk to Al Jazeera: In the Field, Teresa Bo meets some of those determined to work on rewilding Argentina.
