Wild Pacific - The Beauty of Life

  • Wild Pacific - The Beauty of Life

    52:04

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's oceanic divisions. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean (or, depending on definition, to Antarctica) in the south and is bounded by the continents of Asia and Australia in the west and the Americas in the east.

At 165,250,000 square kilometers (63,800,000 square miles) in area (as defined with an Antarctic southern border), this largest division of the World Ocean—and, in turn, the hydrosphere—covers about 46% of Earth's water surface and about 32% of its total surface area, making it larger than all of Earth's land area combined (148,000,000 square kilometers). The centers of both the Water Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere are in the Pacific Ocean. Ocean circulation (caused by the Coriolis effect) subdivides it into two largely independent volumes of water, which meet at the equator: the North(ern) Pacific Ocean and South(ern) Pacific Ocean. The Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific.
Its mean depth is 4,000 meters (13,000 feet). Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, located in the western north Pacific, is the deepest point in the world, reaching a depth of 10,928 meters (35,853 feet). The Pacific also contains the deepest point in the Southern Hemisphere, the Horizon Deep in the Tonga Trench, at 10,823 meters (35,509 feet). The third deepest point on Earth, the Sirena Deep, is also located in the Mariana Trench.
The western Pacific has many major marginal seas, including the South China Sea, the East China Sea, the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk, the Philippine Sea, the Coral Sea, and the Tasman Sea.

Fish are an important economic asset in the Pacific. The shallower shoreline waters of the continents and the more temperate islands yield herring, salmon, sardines, snapper, swordfish, and tuna, as well as shellfish.

The contours of the Mediterranean have changed during the course of its history. Near Gibraltar, Africa was once connected to the European continent. When the land bridge at Gibraltar collapsed, the Mediterranean basin filled up again. The Suez Canal is today connected to the Red Sea. • Why the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans Dont Mix

    8:48

???? Our shop for unique and stylish Bright Side MERCH (open globally!):

When you look at the seas and oceans on the map you might think that they just flow into each other. It seems like there’s only one big ocean, and people just gave different names to its parts. Well, you’ll be amazed at how vivid the borders between them are!

The border between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans is like a line between 2 worlds. It looks as if the two oceans meet at an invisible wall which does not let them flow into each other and mix their waters. Why on Earth does it happen? We know for sure there is no invisible wall inside, and water is water. So what could interfere with its mixing?

    SUMMARY:
    - Pacific oceans have different density and chemical make-up, the level of salinity and other qualities. One can see by their color that they are far from being the same.
    - Haloclines – borders between waters with different salinity – are the most spectacular, and this is what we see when the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans meet.
    - Haloclines appear when water in one ocean or sea is at least 5 times saltier than in the other.
    - Another important difference between the two oceans' water is the strength of molecules' connection, or surface tensile strength.
    - Maybe they could gradually start mixing with time, but as the flows in them have opposite directions, they just don’t have time to do this.
    - There are also thermoclines – borders between water of different temperatures, like the warm water of Gulf Stream and much colder North Atlantic Ocean.
    - The North and Baltic Seas meet near the Danish city of Skagen. The water in them does not mix because of different density.
    - The Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet at the Strait of Gibraltar and have a different density and salinity, so their water does not mix too.
    - The Uruguay River and its afflux meet in Misiones province in Argentina. One of them is cleaned to be used in agriculture, and the other gets almost red because of loam during rainy seasons.
    - Mosel and Rhein meet in Koblenz, Germany. Rheine has lighter water and Mosel – darker.
    - Alaknanda and Bhagirathi Rivers meet in India. Alaknanda is dark and Bhagirathi is light.
    - The Jialing and Yangtze Rivers meet in Chongqing, China.
The Jialing is clean and the Yangtze is brown.
    - The water of the Chuya has an unusual cloudy white color here and looks dense and thick. Katun is clean and turquoise. Flowing into each other they form a single two-colored flow that does not mix for some time.
    - The Rhone and Arve rivers flow into each other in Geneva, Switzerland. The Rhone is a pure river that flows out of the lake of Geneva, the Arve is cloudy as it gets its water from glaciers of the Chamonix valley.

  • Cocos Island: Mystery of the Pacific Ocean | Free Documentary Nature

    43:16

Cocos Island protrudes from the Pacific Ocean - a lone volcano peeking out of the blue grey waters, off the Costa Rican coast. The island has many similarities with the fictional Treasure Island, penned by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, himself an intrepid traveler. Maybe he was inspired by tales of Cocos Island as he never went there himself. The tiny island is just 25 sqm2 and covered by an impenetrable jungle of streams, waterfalls and gorges, making it the world's largest uninhabited island rainforest. Because it is so isolated, unique flora and fauna flourish. Today, as a national park and world natural heritage, park rangers guard and oversee the entire island so it may hopefully remain a treasure for decades and centuries to come.

    On Christ alone
    Our Chief Cornerstone
    No other foundation
    Can we build upon

    Not philosophy
    Nor the wisdom of man
    All other ground
    Is sinking sand

    Upon this Rock
    You build Your Church
    And the gates of hell
    Will not prevail

    When we bind and loose
    We proclaim Your truth
    And in Jesus’ Name,
    We will not fail

    Crucified
    Raised up from the dead
    Led captivity captive
    It is finished

    He gave us the keys
    His authority
    Now we are joint-heirs
To the praise of His glory

    Lyrics:
A couple of kids got hit by a Union Pacific train
Carrying sheet metal and household appliances
    Through the pouring rain
They were planning on getting married
    After graduation
    Had a little baby girl
Trouble came and shut it down
Things like that ain’t supposed to happen
    In this quiet town
    Families are tight
    Good people
They still don’t deadbolt their doors at night
    In this quiet town
When we first heard opioid stories
They were always in whispering tones
    Now banners of sorrow
Mark the front steps of childhood homes
Parents wept through daddy’s girl eulogies
    And merit badge milestones
    With their daughters and sons
Laying there lifeless in their suits and gowns
    Somebody’s been keepin’ secrets

    In this quiet town
    They know how to live
Good people who lean on Jesus
    They’re quick to forgive
    In this quiet town
Now whenever I’m near the town
I’ll find some reason to give
And I will walk with the dead and the living
    Where I used to live
And every time I see my parents
In the prime of their lives
    Offering their son
The kind of love he could never put down
Well part of me is still that stainless kid
    Lucky
    In this quiet town
    Salt of the land
    Hard-working people
    If you’re in trouble
    They’ll lend you a hand
    Here in this quiet town
The first crop of hay is up
    School let out
    And the sun beats down
Smoke billows from a Sunday train
That cries away from a quiet town

  • Wild Pacific - The Beauty of Life

    43:44

    16:47

The writing of award-winning author Cheryl Strayed has been described as courageous, gritty, elegant, precise, smart, funny, and sublime. She's a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, having written the critically acclaimed novel Torch, as well as articles for The New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine, Allure, Self, and many others. Most recently, however, she's been in the spotlight for her upcoming memoir, Wild, which is about her 1,100 mile solo journey along the Pacific Crest Trail. She walked the trail seeking forgiveness and hoping to find her innocent self again, yet what began as an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise, became something much greater. Through this journey, she found transcendence, hope, and healing. She confronted the wild and she confronted herself, ultimately finding the extraordinary in those things that we so often take for granted. Cheryl currently lives in Portland, Oregon where even indoors she continues to find meaning. Like her mother before her, she seems to bring magic into every day. For instance, when we asked her what she believes is the most extraordinary place in the world, she had this to say: My bed at six-thirty in the morning, after my two children have crammed themselves in beside me and my husband and our cat, Gulla. Because real, live, wild love is there. And what's more extraordinary than that? Wild comes out in March 2012, and beyond that Cheryl plans to continue growing as an artist. Her hope is that her next book always reaches further, dives deeper, and risks bolder than the one that came before it.

  • Collecting & Identifying Moss

    17:22

Spring has officially sprung! It's been really nice outside and I just had to get out of the studio and bring you some candid content, from the outdoors. I've also pretty much depleted my moss reserves, so this is the perfect opportunity to stock up. Let's get mossy!

I know this one doesn't go as in depth on identifying moss as some of you may have liked, but I quickly realized this would have way more of a project than I anticipated, if I had. That said, I'll definitely do a dedicated video on it when I can find the time. Until then, I hope that the tips I gave in this video will help you at least get started.

For those of you wondering, most and I mean most mosses will work in a terrarium or vivarium. The propagation method that's linked below closely resembles that of a terrarium. With it, I've been able to grow everything except for some (not all) haircap and pillow mosses. That's why I don't recommend them. Additionally, the only one from this video that's hit or miss is hypnum moss. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I pretty much always has success with the others though.

    Propagate Moss:

I get asked a lot how to grow moss and I usually reference that video because there's not much to it. Light + Water = Happy Patches of Moss! Don't over think it. Aside from thoroughly cleaning them before use and trimming over time, there's not much else I do for them other than that. More light and more water is better than not enough. However, mosses are very resilient and will adapt to various conditions, regardless of the type.

I think that about covers everything I can think of for the moment. If you have any further questions, be sure to leave a comment and I'll do my best to get back to you! • Jess Phoenix | Ms. Adventure: My Wild Explorations in Science, Lava, and Life | Talks at Google

    59:42

Jess Phoenix discusses her book Ms. Adventure: My Wild Explorations in Science, Lava, and Life. As a volcanologist and natural hazards expert, Jess Phoenix has dedicated her life to scientific exploration. Her career path—hard-earned in the still male-dominated world of science—has shoved her headlong into deep-sea submersibles, congressional races, glittering cocktail parties at Manhattan’s elite Explorers Club, and numerous pairs of Caterpillar work boots. It has also inspired her to devote her life to making science more inclusive and accessible. Ms. Adventure skillfully blends personal memoir, daring adventure, and scientific exploration, following Phoenix’s journey from jungles to glaciers, university classrooms to television studios, and even to the side of the world’s largest volcano, where she fixes a tire with a ballpoint pen, bubblegum, and duct tape.

Jess Phoenix is executive director and cofounder of the environmental scientific research organization Blueprint Earth. Since 2008, she has been a volcanologist, an extreme explorer, and a professional field scientist. She works with universities and major research institutions to study lava flows and natural hazards, perform climate research on glaciers, and more. Jess is a fellow in the Explorers Club and the Royal Geographical Society, a featured scientist on the Discovery and Science channels, and her writing has appeared on websites such as BBC Online, DailyKos, and Medium, as well as in Face the Current magazine and local print publications.
