  • Daily Winter Life in Alaska

    27:34

From the vast horizons to the snow beneath our feet, this truly wild place we call home has made its way deep into our hearts and shaped the way we live and carry out daily tasks. Off grid living, particularly in Alaska is quite notably not always simple and requires great energy and time, however we often feel comforted in our humble cabin surrounded by such incredible landscape. Every day we strive to create this magical life where we can learn to embrace each and every experience.

    So. Much. Snow.

CLICK HERE - for my first Alaska video:

Hi there! I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska and I adore being from this beautiful state — icy winters and all! While I live in Los Angeles now, I love any excuse to travel to my home state, so when my dad suggested I make a sequel to my first Alaska video (“What it’s like to live in Alaska”) my response was “HELL YEAH!!” (Thanks for the plane ticket, Dad!)

This video was so fun to make. While I technically shot it alone in Alaska, it was far from a solitary endeavor. A big thank you to Fahrenheit-Be-Darned Running Club for appearing in this video, to my dad for the plane ticket and to both my parents for tips on where to get good winter shots, to my sister for the nostalgic brainstorm session that resulted in this list, and to my best friend Caitlin Cowie for her awesome feedback on this edit and for editing the first Alaska video which I used as a template for this one! Couldn’t have done it without you guys! Love you so much.

We've escaped to the wilderness & we're building our home at a cabin in the woods ... a phrase that we didn't think we'd be saying just one short year ago. But, if 2020 taught us anything it was to embrace change so with that spirit we are looking forward to all of the many blessings, lessons and love that 2021 has in store for us all.
This week we're sharing a day in the life living in Canada! With the winter season upon us we've always got snow, internet problems, and an endless list of indoor renovations to keep us busy.

    Who are we?

We're Eamon and Bec, a Canadian couple who previously lived and traveled full-time in our self converted Sprinter Van!! When the pandemic hit earlier this year we made the difficult decision to abandon our van in Africa and fly home to Canada. Now we're here... living at a cabin in the Canadian wilderness. We've always envisioned moving into the woods by the lake and building our dream tiny cabin as a home base for us to come back to in between our international travels. We cannot wait to have a place to call our own!

  • Little House in Winter -- The Beautiful Life

    10:02

Nick is working on finishing his handmade doors, Sadie is his sidekick, and Esther is (not very) patiently awaiting spring. This life is slow and intense and sometimes frustrating...but it is beautiful.

A NOTE TO OUR FRIENDS: Our middle child, Stella, had a bad fall on this day. That's one of the reasons that we didn't upload all weekend. The other three reasons were snow, snow, and snow. Stella fell on the concrete at school and the school staff was very concerned for her. As it turns out she is fine, but she still had a bad day and didn't want to be on video. We went ahead and made a vlog anyway, with the rest of us, and she'll be back in tomorrow's update, just as spunky as ever. And you know I'll get caught up again with uploads someday. :)

Thanks for hanging out with us! We appreciate you!

    --

The potato casserole is another no recipe recipe. Nick is the one making it in this video, but we both make versions of it. If I were making it the gravy might have been a little thicker and I probably would have added corn. I can corn and am always looking for ways to sneak it in. :)

Prepare your potatoes and your chicken ahead. We do this to use leftovers, and you can do pretty much the same recipe with pasta or rice instead of potatoes. It is a poor man's food. If you've got a few cups of cooked chicken and nothing else, that's the time. Cut the chicken into cubes and precook your starch (your potatoes, rice, or pasta) and any vegetables you want to add that aren't already soft from being canned or frozen.

Then heat up a skillet for the gravy. The gravy starts with equal parts butter and flour in a cast iron pan. I do about 3 Tbsp each. Cook this (the roux) until it is just barely turning brown, stirring constantly. Add 2 cups chicken broth and 2 cups milk, which you hopefully remembered to mix together ahead of time and bring to room temperature. :) Add the liquid steadily, stirring constantly, and keep the gravy over medium heat until it thickens. When it is thick, you can add the rest of the ingredients, including some crushed dry herbs and salt and pepper, stir gently, and throw it in the oven for 20-30 minutes.

    Enjoy!

Esther is a writer, the author of a recent memoir called What Falls From the Sky, and a daughter of the homesteading teacher and activist Carla Emery, who wrote The Encyclopedia of Country Living. Our first overnight trip to our cabin in the woods was a success! We head out on a 60 mile snowmachine excursion to access the remote cabin and when we arrive there is a entire day's worth of cleaning to do. After settling down for our first hot meal, cooked courtesy of the mini camp stove, we get a good night's rest for the long journey home. As we leave our new cabin we can't help looking forward to the many more adventures yet to come!

  • A real day in the life living in Alaska | winter 2021

    15:59

Here's a day in the life of living in Alaska in the winter, from 4 Alaska residents. Or Anchoragites, as some Alaskans might tease. We went on a little trip to Andrea's cabin north of Anchorage. Being from Alaska, I always get questions about what it's really like to live in Alaska. It's really different depending on the season, which is one of my favorite things about living here. Winter in Alaska is hard to live in, but it is the favorite season of many Alaskans for all of the winter activities! Winter in Alaska seems unlike any other place in the world. I love this little representation of winter with Andrea, Jordan, and Katie!

When March arrived so did the snow, we received more than 3 feet of snowfall over the course of 1 week. Once we completed the task of snow removal at the cabin, we shovel a path to the beehives in preparation of our new bee packages.

  • Winter Trip to Our Alaskan Off Grid Cabin

    39:31

We get in one last ride to our lakefront cabin in the Alaskan wilderness. The long journey requires strategic packing of our items for the rough ride and cold weather. Once we arrive and settle in, we head down to the lake to try our hand at ice fishing the new waters and explore the terrain with the dogs. We end the evening with a woodstove cooked meal in our toasty cabin.

Stay tuned for part 2 of this adventure.

This is AlaskaFriends episode 4! We take our neighbor Paulie to experience life in Palmer, Alaska. We meet up with our family friends, Ray and Sue, who practice modern subsistence living in Alaska, where they pretty much grow, hunt, raise, or fish all of the food that they eat. Paulie and I take the 4-wheelers out for a ride, try eating some moose and bear, and go wild in their organic garden with giant Alaskan cabbages!

  • A real day in the life living in Alaska | summer 2019

    22:03

Here’s a day in the life of living in Alaska in the summer, from two Alaska residents. I went on a little overnight fishing trip to Seward, Alaska with my friends and decided to vlog! Being from Alaska, I always get questions about what it’s really like to live in Alaska (does the sun set in Alaska? Is it snowing all year around?, etc.) Of course, it’s really different depending on the season. Summertime in Alaska is unlike any other place in the world. It’s super special to me, so I’m happy I get to share it.

  • Garden Harvest & Winter Prep Before the Ground Freezes | Autumn In Alaska

    28:32

The air is changing in Alaska and winter is soon to arrive. We strip the tomato plants of their green fruit for ripening indoors, harvest our celery, tuck the bees in for winter and plant our garlic seed for next year's garden. With the arrival of below freezing temperatures we couldn't forget about the delectable Winter Chanterelles growing in the muskeg and head to the bog for an incredible harvest. There's more to do before winter sets in but we've earned some time to enjoy a fresh meal by the warm woodstove.

Fresh snowfall at the cabin creates a scenic backdrop for our daily tasks outdoors. This is our third winter living at our dry cabin. We keep things simple with a wood stove for heat, a small solar system to meet our energy needs, and an outdoor shower, which in turn allows us ample time to enjoy all that Alaska has to offer.

  • Fall at the Off Grid Cabin | Life in Alaska

    20:11

Fall is a short season in Alaska, nonetheless crisp days fill the air and vibrant leaves create a colorful landscape. With freezing temperatures the growing season comes to a halt and we embrace the wood stove for the beauty and warmth it provides.

We clean up the yard, protect the fruit trees with vole guards and prepare the beehives for the upcoming winter with candy boards, quilt boxes, and extra insulation. We end the night with a lovely harvest of brussel sprouts for a fresh meal at the cabin.

We got pretty cooped up inside over the past couple weeks due to the cold snap we got here in Alaska. Sometimes it's just a semi-local cold snap, but this one that hit Alaska this January seemed to affect everyone from Kodiak to Phrudoe Bay! We didn't even have it as bad as some folks in the city BUT...BUT, we don't have fancy natural gas, or propane heat. We are going through our firewood like crazy!!!!

  • A Day at the Cabin | Life in Alaska

    24:28

The long daylight hours and melting snow signify spring break up in Alaska. We tend to the flock, transplant seedlings in the high tunnel and happily welcome the change of season by falling a dead spruce tree for a relaxing campfire and home cooked meal.

We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure ????

What's up everyone! If you're new to our channel let me fill you in on what's going on. We are the Bramante Brothers Off Grid Vlog!
*Links to some of the things you see in this video are down below
The purpose of this Alaska Off Grid vlog is to document my families life living in the remote Denali region of south-central Alaska.
My family and my brothers family share off-grid property in Alaska where we run a tourist lodge during the summer, and read comic books and drink whiskey during the winter. Just kidding, but there is plenty of spare time on our hands since we work from home so we created this vlog to pass the time when we aren't so busy
A day in the life episode was an idea we had because we get asked what we do around here on a day-to-day basis when we aren't running the lodge.
From hauling water, working out, dealing with our cold cellar and chopping wood, here is a behind the scenes look at a couple random days here at Caribou Lodge.
