Mardi and a voyage thither by Herman Melville( Book )
215 editions published between 1849 and 2020 in 6 languages and held by 3,488 libraries worldwide
Presented as narratives of his own South Sea experiences, Melville's first two books had roused incredulity in many readers. Their disbelief, he declared, had been the main inducement in altering his plan for his third book, Mardi: and a Voyage Thither (1849). Melville wanted to exploit the rich poetical material of Polynesia and also to escape feeling irked, cramped, & fettered by a narrative of facts. I began to feel . . . a longing to plume my pinions for a flight, he told his English publisher. This scholarly edition aims to present a text as close to the author's intention as surviving evidence permits. Based on collations of all editions publishing during Melville's lifetime, it incorporates author corrections and many emendations made by the present editors. This edition of Mardi is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America). -- Amazon.com

33 editions published between 1982 and 2009 in English and held by 3,239 libraries worldwide
Typee is a fast-moving adventure tale, an autobiographical account of the author's Polynesian stay, an examination of the nature of good and evil, and a frank exploration of sensuality and exotic ritual
White-jacket: or, The world in a man-of-war by Herman Melville( file )
72 editions published between 1850 and 2017 in English and held by 3,142 libraries worldwide
Herman Melville wrote White-Jacket; or, The World in a Man-of-War, during two months of intense work in the summer of 1849. He drew upon his memories of naval life, having spent fourteen months as an ordinary seaman aboard a frigate as it sailed the Pacific and made the homeward voyage around Cape Horn. Already that same summer, Melville had written Redburn, and he regarded the books as two jobs, which I have done for money--being forced to it, as other men are to sawing wood. The reviewers were not as hard on White-Jacket as Melville himself was. The English liked its praise of British seamen. The Americans were more interested in Melville's attack on naval abuses, particularly flogging, and his advocacy of humanitarian causes. Soon Melville was acclaimed the best sea writer of the day. Part autobiography, part epic fiction, White-Jacket remains a brilliantly imaginative social novel by one of the great writers of the sea. This text of the story is an Approved Text of the Center for Editions of American Authors (Modern Language Association of America).

The Klamath river. This nearly 300 mile river runs through Oregon and to the Northern California coast and, for the last century, dams have decimated this once abundant resource and blocked the route of salmon and steelhead.

But this isn’t a story about the fish. With this next documentary, we learn about the Yurok tribe. This thousand year old community relies on the river for survival, but over the years have learned to be resilient as they aim to restore clean water and food to their community.

If you want more about how this documentary was made, stick around to the end where we get a little Q&A with the filmmaker. And now from American Rivers and Swiftwater Films, this is Guardians of the River.

  • Legends of a river: The German soul of the Rhine | The Rhine from above - Episode 3/5

    52:00

Watch the other episodes of the series:

The World Heritage Site in the middle Rhine valley is regarded as the epitome of the German soul. There is a castle per kilometer and wine which the Romans brought to the North 2,000 years ago. Past the legendary Lorelei, the Rhine flows on to the German corner at Koblenz. From the Siebengebirge, the seven mountains, the route leads to Bonn, the former German capital.

The Rhine has been shrouded in myth over the centuries: No other river in Europe has more stories to tell - full of desires and longings. From a bird's eye view the film dives into the canyons of the Rhine source and at the Rhine Falls small drops of water fly past the audience so that they consider themselves right in the middle of the cascades. Panoramic shots amaze the audience all the way from Switzerland to the Netherlands. The Rhine is also one of the busiest waterways worldwide: The contradiction between industry and the urge for re-naturalization is vivid in everyday life of many of the protagonists - from the archaeologist at Lake Constance to the shepherd living in the green Rhine delta near Rotterdam.

  • My First River Cruise: American Harmony - Columbia River

    29:15

After 52 ocean cruises I finally had the opportunity to sail on the Columbia River and Snake River with American Cruise Lines, on their ship American Harmony.

This was a beautiful cruise with very interesting scenery as the ship made its way from the desert conditions in Clarkston, Washington, to the cooler, wetter coastal environment in Astoria and Portland, Oregon.

None of the video clips you'll see here were provided by the cruise line... I shot everything you'll see in this video myself... during a 7-day cruise in August of 2021. I made a special arrangement with American Cruise Lines to cruise at their expense in exchange for giving them a copy of all the photos and videos I shot during the cruise, so that their marketing department could use them.

This was a very different kind of cruise than the ocean cruises I've previously done with Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Princess, Norwegian, MSC, and Viking. A small river cruise ship has some interesting advantages over the big mega cruise ships... such as a complete lack of any crowding, no need for security x-ray inspections when boarding, ice makers and laundry facilities that passengers can use at no additional charge, soft drinks such as Coca Cola readily available any hour of the day or night, as well as cookies and other snacks that you can pick up anytime. On the other hand, a small ship can't compete with the wide number of dining and entertainment choices on a mega cruise ship.

I recognise one as being Victorian but the other two are mysteries until I get home and clean them off! Can you ID them before I tell you what they are?

It's amazing what you can learn from the objects you find in the Thames mud. In this instance, I learned some interesting bits of info about the Monarchs on the coins! There are also a few other artefacts which you might be able to help me to identify!

You can follow me on twitter and instagram @tidelineart to see more of my mudlarking finds.

  • Mudlarking: Lost And Found On The River Thames | Lara Maiklem | TEDxNewcastle

    13:46

What is 'mudlarking', and what's lurking in the gloopy mud of the Thames. Lara Maiklem introduces her rather unusual pastime and reveals some of the weird and wonderful objects she's found in more than 15 years of searching the Thames foreshore.
Follow Lara on @LondonMudlark Mudlarking is the practice of scavenging river banks looking for treasures hidden in the mud and Lara Maiklem has spent nearly 20 years doing exactly this mostly along the River Thames. She started river walking as a way to relax and over time started to become increasingly curious about the wide variety of things she found on her walks.

Often these tiny discoveries yielded incredible history and stories behind them. As she began to document and share her discoveries she discovered there was a surprisingly large community of people who were fascinated by her findings and the practice of mudlarking.

This ultimately led Bloomsbury Books (famous for the Harry Potter series) to publish her first book appropriately titled, Mudlarking. Launched earlier in August 2019, the book has shot to Number 2 on the Sunday Times Bestseller list as well as being named the BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Conclusion on the Historical Romance genre from Artificial Intelligence: Historical romance novels are set in times past, usually Regency or Victorian England. The heroes of these stories tend to wield a lot of power. They are rich, beautiful, and brave. His heroine is the purest and most beautiful of all women. He falls in love with her, and they live happily ever after.
Please write in the comments an opinion on this genre from a non-artificial intelligence.

  • Searching a drained river bed -

    32:19

Last year in 2020 in between lockdowns Simon, Jules and I went to Guildford to explore the River Wey. The water levels had dropped dramatically because of a collapsed weir. We find all sorts of odd bits and pieces that have been lingering on the river bed for many years. We do however make a wonderful discovery - and that is the remnants of a pipe kiln belonging to the Swinyard family who were master clay pipe makers in the late 18th and 19th century. Im happy to say that that the pipes and the remnants of the pipe kiln will be given to the Society for Clay Pipe Research for further examination! I also found a plaque with a name on and would welcome any help in researching it to see if there any descendants who would like the plaque.

In my video I mention the Society for Clay Pipe Research and how you may wish to join it! You can download an application form here:-

Membership of the Society is open to anyone and includes archaeologists, historians and
genealogists with a professional interest in the subject as well as libraries, collectors and ordinary
people with a general interest in pipes. The Society is a lively and friendly organisation that has
members from around the world. Why not join today and fi nd out why so many people have
    become fascinated with the subject?

Woman Finds Abandoned Dog Near River With Heavy Anchor Tied To His Neck

One day, a Lithuanian woman named Audra Petraškienė and her daughter, Andra Petraškienė, were driving when they came upon a drenched, shivering dog. When they stopped to take a closer look, they were heartbroken.

Seemingly, someone tried to drown this innocent dog because they had hung a large, metal box around his neck. It appeared to be a makeshift anchor, attached to cause the dog to drown in the river.

When the Petraškienės found the dog, it was clear that he had gone through an ordeal. He was shaking and scared. While his persistence may have saved him from his near-death experience, Audra felt that he would likely be traumatized for life.
