  • World War II, A War for Resources: Crash Course World History #220

In which John Green teaches you about World War II, and some of the causes behind the war. In a lot of ways, WWII was about resources, and especially about food. The expansionist aggression of both Germany and Japan were in a lot of ways about resources. There were other reasons, to be sure, but the idea that the Axis needed more food can't be ignored.

  • 10 Most Amazing Discoveries From World War II

Secret Nazi nuclear bunkers, sunken hordes of silver, and lost World War Two relics in the jungle, here are 10 of some of the greatest discoveries from World War Two.

    Subscribe to American Eye

    10: Secret Nazi Nuclear Bunker
When you think about the Nazis, you typically think of lunatic German soldiers shouting angrily and doing some pretty horrendous stuff. You don't typically think about ants. But in fact, the Nazis were basically a bunch of ants. They burrowed all underneath Europe, constructing all kinds of underground tunnels and bunkers, with some of them only being found now.

    9: Sunken Silver
When the Nazis fired their torpedoes at the S.S. Gairsoppa during the Second World War, they probably had no idea that the ship was actually carrying $240 million in silver bars and coins. Not that it would have done the Nazis much good in the end, but if they had known they probably would not have sunk the ship.

    8: The Musashi Battleship Wreck
What do you do if you're an American billionaire with an obsession for World War Two relics? Well, if you are Paul Allen, you put together your own exploration team and start looking for shipwrecks. This is exactly what happened back in 2015 when Mr. Allen discovered the sunken Japanese battleship, the Musashi, after it was sunk over 70 years ago by the United States forces.

7: Carrier Pigeon in the Chimney
Forget sunken ships and forget war planes. One of the coolest World War Two discoveries ever was the carrier pigeon found in a chimney. People from the United States probably are not that familiar with carrier pigeons, but in Britain they get a lot of respect. They have a huge historical significance in the United Kingdom.

    6: The P-40 Kittyhawk
On June 28, 1942, Sergeant Dennis Copping was flying his damaged P-40 Kittyhawk between two British airfields located in Egypt. The plan was to get the plane repaired. However, the 24-year-old soldier crash landed in the middle of the desert and the aircraft sat there for over 70 years until found again in 2012.

    5: The USS Independence
The USS independence was an impressive aircraft carrier used during the war. It operated from between 1943 and 1945 in the Pacific Ocean. Then, it became one of the vessels in a target fleet for atomic bomb testing in Bikini Atoll. It was damaged by shock waves and radiation, and was eventually sent back to the United States, where it was intentionally sunk off the coast of San Francisco.

    4: The Japanese Mega Sub
The Japanese I-400 Class Submarine was easily one of the most impressive war machines of the 1940s. It was the largest submarine ever built, and it kept the title of largest until the 1960s when nuclear ballistic missile submarines went into production. But in the 40s, it was a mega sub. It had the ability to travel around the entire world 1.5 times without needing to refuel.

3: Panther Tank in the Basement
Everyone dreams of owning a tank. Arnold Schwarzenegger has one, why can't I? Well, in 2015, police in northern Germany seized a World War 2 Panther tank that was being kept inside a senior citizen's home. The man in question was 78 years old at the time, and he had been hoarding the Panther tank along with some other pretty impressive military equipment, such as a torpedo and an anti-aircraft gun.

    2: The Me-262 Aircraft
In the Netherlands, the substantial remains of a Me-262 Schwalbe jet fighter have been discovered buried under the ground. The discovery came completely by accident while workers from the Deelen Air Base Museum were working to excavate a WWII bomb crater at a nearby airfield.

1: WWII Relic in the Jungle
World War Two planes are basically scattered all over the world, and some of them are only now being found. Take the Japanese Mitsubishi G4M1 Betty Bomber recently discovered on the Balalae Island in the Solomons, which had been rotting in the jungle for over 70 years. And it's not the only one.

  • World War 2 Navy Comparison — Fleets Evolution 1939–1946

On the brink of World War II, the emergence of effective radar systems, as well as the development of submarines and carrier-borne aviation, drastically changed the nature of naval warfare. Even the most innovative doctrines became hopelessly obsolete on the battlefields of the new war.
In this video, we'll tell you about the navies of the leading naval powers of that time — their composition, number of ships, and the ratio of the main ship types, such as battleships, cruisers, destroyers, aircraft carriers, and submarines.

Operation 'Greif', also known as Operation Griffin
As their last trick the Germans planned to create chaos and confusion among the American troops.

The essence of the plan was to form a unit consisting of German soldiers who spoke fluent English with an American dialect.
It was planned for these Germans to be dressed up as American soldiers and equipped with American weapons, tanks and vehicles.

Why was the German Army so Effective and strong in World War 2?

♦Consider to Support the Channel of Patreon and gain cool stuff:

After the end of the Great War… and after an unsatisfactory peace, huge inflation, and an unprecedented economic crisis, Germany was on its knees…
Even being a country with huge economic potential, due to the factories and companies that still existed there, Germany was, however, only a shadow of the former monarchy.
But ... from 1933 to 1941 Germany achieved what it had not realized in the previous war. It had a new army that was considered unstoppable, acting with precision, speed, and communication, taking by surprise the great European powers!
Thus, at the end of 1941, almost all of Europe was controlled by Germany and its allies.
German soldiers could see the buildings of Moscow from a distance ... Almost all predictions led to a total German victory.
But How did this all happen? Was it just the efficiency of the German Army? Or was it a multitude of reasons, including sound planning or even luck?

In which John Green teaches you about World War 2, as it was lived on the home front. You'll learn about how the war changed the country as a whole, and changed how Americans thought about their country. John talks about the government control of war production, and how the war probably helped to end the Great Depression. A broader implementation of the income tax, the growth of large corporations, and the development of the West Coast as a manufacturing center were also results of the war. The war positivelychanged the roles of women and African Americans, but it was pretty terrible for the Japanese Americans who were interred in camps. In short, World War II changed America's role in the world, changed American life at home, and eventually spawned the History Channel.

Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. At home in America, everyone joined in the war effort, with everyone contributing to American industry:
But America had its fair share of shame, such as when the country turned away Jewish refugees on the St. Louis who would die in the Holocaust:
During World War II, there was also a painful period of Japanese relocation and internment throughout the country:

  • Lego Battle of the Bulge - World War II Stopmotion

In honor of the 76th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge

On December 16, 1944, the Germans launched their last major counteroffensive of the Second World War. After planning for months, the Germans took advantage of a large winter storm to mount their assault, through which they planned to reach the Belgian port of Antwerp. At 5:00 A.M on the 16th, the Germans started bombarding the American line along the Ardennes Forest in Belgium. Fresh with new and inexperienced soldiers, the American line was quickly penetrated. The Germans attacked in massive numbers with tanks, soldiers, and other military vehicles. Within two days, they advanced past the forest and into the surrounding towns, including Stavelot, St. Vith, Schnee Eifel, and Malmedy. The following week involved intense fighting in the towns with fierce resistance from the American forces. One week later, on December 20, the 101st Airborne Division became completely surrounded by German forces in the town of Bastogne. The Allied Commanders, realizing the severity of the situation, tasked Patton’s Third Army with relieving the 101st. After intense fighting over the next week, the US 4th Armored Division of Patton’s Third Army arrived in Bastogne, alleviating the battered 101st Airborne Division and driving back the German Army. Unable to retaliate, the exhausted German forces retreated back into Germany. By the end of January, all traces of the counteroffensive were erased. Only three months after the conclusion of the Battle of the Bulge, the remaining Germans surrendered on May 8, 1945, officially ending the Second World War in Europe.

We did not include some aspects of this battle. This was not intended to offend or diminish the importance of the events that took place but was rather a creative choice we made.

  • The Allied bombing of German cities in World War II was unjustifiable

Want to join the debate? Check out the Intelligence Squared website to hear about future live events and podcasts:

Filmed at the Royal Institute of British Architects on 25th October 2012.

    Event info:

No one doubts the bravery of the thousands of men who flew and died in Bomber Command. The death rate was an appalling 44%. And yet until the opening of a monument in Green Park this year they have received no official recognition, with many historians claiming that the offensive was immoral and unjustified. How can it be right, they argue, for the Allies to have deliberately targeted German cities causing the death of hundreds of thousands of civilians? Even on a strategic level the offensive failed to bring about the collapse of civilian morale that was its intention.

Others, however, maintain that the attacks made a decisive contribution to the Allied victory. Vast numbers of German soldiers and planes were diverted from the eastern and western fronts, while Allied bombing attacks virtually destroyed the German air force, clearing the way for the invasion of the continent.

✚ Watch my Cold War-Era PLAYLIST:

This film (originally titled as ‘Journey Across Berlin’) is a 1961 documentary produced by the United States Information Agency (USIA) about the capital city of Germany, Berlin after World War 2. It documents the West's position on defense of Berlin against the Soviets. Beginning with the destruction and economic breakdown of the city at end of the war, the film presents significant historical events from an American perspective, such as establishment of occupation zones, Berlin blockade and airlift in 1948–49, uprising of 1953 in East Germany, elections in free Berlin and the West's determined actions to maintain the freedom of West Berlin. The film was completed a few months before the construction of the Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer), a barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989.

As World War 2 came to an end in 1945, a pair of Allied peace conferences at Yalta and Potsdam determined the fate of Germany’s territories. They split the defeated nation into four “allied occupation zones”: The eastern part of the country went to the Soviet Union, while the western part went to the United States, Great Britain and France.

Even though Berlin was located entirely within the Soviet part of the country, the Yalta and Potsdam agreements split the city into similar sectors. The Soviets took the eastern half, while the other Allies took the western. This four-way occupation of Berlin began in June 1945.

    Blockade and crisis:
The existence of West Berlin, a conspicuously capitalist city deep within communist East Germany, “stuck like a bone in the Soviet throat,” as Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev put it. The Russians began maneuvering to drive the United States, Britain and France out of the city for good. In 1948, a Soviet blockade of West Berlin aimed to starve the western Allies out of the city. Instead of retreating, however, the United States and its allies supplied their sectors of the city from the air. This effort, known as the Berlin Airlift, lasted for more than a year and delivered more than 2.3 million tons of food, fuel and other goods to West Berlin. The Soviets called off the blockade in 1949.

After a decade of relative calm, tensions flared again in 1958. For the next three years, the Soviets – emboldened by the successful launch of the Sputnik satellite the year before and embarrassed by the seemingly endless flow of refugees from east to west (nearly 3 million since the end of the blockade, many of them young skilled workers such as doctors, teachers and engineers) – blustered and made threats, while the Allies resisted. Summits, conferences and other negotiations came and went without resolution. Meanwhile, the flood of refugees continued. In June 1961, some 19,000 people left the East Germany through Berlin. The following month, 30,000 fled. In the first 11 days of August, 16,000 East Germans crossed the border into West Berlin, and on August 12 some 2,400 followed – the largest number of defectors ever to leave East Germany in a single day.

    The Berlin Wall:
That night, Premier Khrushchev gave the East German government permission to stop the flow of emigrants by closing its border for good. In just two weeks, the East German army, police force and volunteer construction workers had completed a makeshift barbed wire and concrete block wall – the Berlin Wall – that divided one side of the city from the other.

Before the wall was built, Berliners on both sides of the city could move around fairly freely: They crossed the East-West border to work, to shop, to go to the theater and the movies. Trains and subway lines carried passengers back and forth. After the wall was built, it became impossible to get from East to West Berlin except through one of three checkpoints: at Helmstedt (“Checkpoint Alpha” in American military parlance), at Dreilinden (“Checkpoint Bravo”) and in the center of Berlin at Friedrichstrasse (“Checkpoint Charlie”). At each of the checkpoints, East German soldiers screened diplomats and other officials before they were allowed to enter or leave. Except under special circumstances, travelers from East and West Berlin were rarely allowed across the border.

  • 23. Collaboration and Resistance in World War II

    European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202)

One of the principal myths concerning collaboration during World War II in France, as in other countries, is that the domestic collaborators did so despite themselves, or to prevent even greater atrocities. In fact, many French, Belgians, Hungarians, Poles, Dutch and others voluntarily and enthusiastically abetted the occupying Germans. This collaboration, inspired by anti-Semitism and xenophobia, often resulted in extremely zealous persecution of Jewish nationals, communists, and others. Along with the myth of reluctant collaboration, France has also been obliged to confront the myth of widespread resistance, promulgated in part by a victorious Charles de Gaulle. Many questions concerning collaboration and resistance still remain unresolved in formerly occupied European countries to this day.

After the United States entered World War II, mobilization began quick, fast, and in a hurry. FDR created government agencies that oversaw the transformation of domestic industrial centers into wartime production factories. And all of this had the effect of increasing GDP by 15% and thus pulled America out of the Great Depression.

Black Americans and Mexican Americans served in the war, some with great distinction. The NAACP encouraged black Americans to participate in the Double V Campaign, which meant they were working for victory abroad and victory over entrenched racism at home. As Mexican Americans left for the war, it left a dearth in agricultural workers and so immigration restrictions were lowered for Mexican citizens who could come and help.

Also on the Homefront, Japanese Americans on the west coast were forcibly removed from their homes and relocated into internment camps because they were associated with the hated Japanese enemy
