  • Gigantic Overseas Autoliner | Mega Transports | Free Documentary

    48:14

A transport to the other side of the globe. The “Höegh Trapper” is the largest automobile transporter in the world. Two hundred meters long, thirty-six meters wide. But the major attraction is actually behind the steel hull: A gigantic cargo area: In total over seventy-one thousand square meters. Enough room for eight-thousand-five-hundred cars. And hundreds of the so-called “High- and Heavies”: Gigantic machines of any kind.
Her journey takes the fully loaded “Trapper” on a journey covering
28,000 kilometers. The starting point: Antwerp in Belgium. Here, Port Captain Per Henningsen has to load 1,000 cars in record time – only 16 hours. Next stop: Bremerhaven, in Germany. Besides 2,000 cars here,
Per has to load 200 high and heavy units – one of which has him
worrying more than usual. He doesn’t know the exact measurements of the mysterious cargo – will it fit into the Trapper? From Bremerhaven, the journey continues to England, France, and Spain, and then out onto the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. From there across the pond to ports in the US and Jamaica, through the Panama Canal onto the Pacific and all the way to New Zealand and Australia…All that in just fifty days! The Panama Canal is the bottleneck of the journey. The canal is over a hundred years old and was designed for the largest ships at that time. Maximum width: 32.3 meters. For behemoths like The Trapper, that’s not enough. Canal authorities began construction on newer, larger lock systems in 2007. Since its opening in 2016, ships belonging to the so-called Neopanamax class can now transit the canal and that includes the Trapper. But even though the new lock chambers are fifty-five meters wide: For the Trapper this means not even ten meters clearance on either side - a special challenge for Captain She and his crew…

  • Most Dangerous Ways To School | COLOMBIA | Free Documentary

    48:18

Most Dangerous Ways To School - Colombia
In northern Colombia, in the region Bajo Cauca, more than 180 miles north of Medellín, the landscape is marked by water and seemingly endless expanses. Every day, the children who live there face this rough, unpredictable wilderness – with just one goal in mind: making it to school. Because this is their chance to break out of poverty and create a better life. Like the ten year old Kendys and the other schoolchildren.

For this, they subject themselves to a daily dose of danger. Some of them must cross a ramshackle bridge that could collapse at any moment. Like the ten year old Kendys and some other schoolchildren. One false step and they could drown or break their legs.

Ten-year-old Juan does not have to cross the bridge, but first he has to cross a river in an extremely wobbly canoe, and then walk through deep mud full of stingrays. Although his way is dangerous, he’s glad that he can go to school at all. It brings him a little closer to his dream of moving to a big city.

The children face all this under tough conditions. The temperature is already 34 degrees Celsius in the morning, with humidity at 97 percent. In order to get closer to their wishes and dreams, each day these children carry not only a backpack, but also the fear – on one of the world’s most dangerous ways to school.

Moon Landing - The World's Greatest Hoax? | History Documentary

Watch the two-part documentary '13 Factors That Saved Apollo 13' here:

When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took their first steps on the moon in July 1969, the world was suddenly split into two categories – those who believe the Apollo 11 landings, and those who don’t. We’ll investigate both sides of this debate – in fact 52% of the British public still believe the landings were an elaborate hoax designed to trump Russia in the space race!

In this show we’ll search for a definitive answer by recreating the moon landing for ourselves, testing the various competing theories against each other. Featuring interviews with leading experts, conspiracy theorists, archive material and highly detailed reconstructions of the landing, we put this debate to bed once and for all.

Amongst these children are 6-year-old Looita and his sister Khadiga.

Their route to school, which is many kilometres long, takes these children of the Afar tribe over jagged earth, over seemingly endless lengths, and every day they are confronted with much more than just the astounding heat. Not one shadow offers coolness; water is a rare and expensive commodity. Even if a breath of wind blows through the desert it most often quickly evolves into a sandstorm, the grains of which temporarily blind the children and whip at their skin. The very young schoolchildren deal with this until they finally reach their destination: school. But it isn’t over yet. There is still plenty of danger to come.

After school they have to head home in unbelievable temperatures, beyond 50 degrees Celsius. Even the youngest schoolchildren have to help dig wells, while the older children – like 14 year Mohammed – work in the salt mines, to aid their family’s survival. The children as well as the adults do not give up hope that school will help them one day - not just to survive, but also to live well off the barren and inhospitable desert.

  • The Families That Spend A Fortune Each Week On Groceries! | Full Documentary | Big Families

    46:51

How does a family with more mouths to feed than days in the week budget their weekly shop!?

In this British TV documentary, we follow some of the UK's largest families and ask the big questions about how these supersize households manage.

    In this episode:

The Hamlins, are determined not to take government handouts. Dad works, mum stays at home and does the odd job and they budget fiercely to stay afloat. In their opinion, it was their choice to have 12 children so it is their responsibility to look after them. And while they do collect child support and working family tax credits, neither of them has ever claimed income support, disability benefit or housing benefit. They are determined to set a good example for their children and that means paying for everything themselves. To save money, they live relatively frugally, cook all of their food from scratch, buy in bulk and don’t spend on anything that isn’t a necessity. If this means that the kids don’t get pocket money, have to make do with hand me downs and have never been abroad then so what? They all have enough to eat and are cared for as well as any other children. They hate the fact that the media are determined to portray large families as sponging whiners who have had numerous children precisely so that they don’t have to work and are determined to never fall into that trap. But do the children feel the same? And is it fair to deprive them of the Xboxes, trainers, pocket money and trips to the cinema that they see all of their friends enjoying? Or at the end of the day is a loving family all that really matters?

Next we will meet a family who hold a very different set of beliefs, The Watsons. They are a single parent family of 15, living in council accommodation and survive solely on benefits. The mum believes that she is performing an important role in raising the next generation and doesn’t think that she conforms to the typical portrayal of a large family - yes they live in a council house and she doesn’t work but the government handouts aren’t squandered on flat screen TVs and vodka, it all goes on the kids. She maintains that even if she worked, she would be worse off as paying for childcare would cost more than she could earn. In her opinion why go to work to pay for someone to look after her kids when she can just cut out the middle man and do it herself. She is currently petitioning the council for a bigger house as they are all living on top of each other. But if they are given one she expects a backlash from the local press and community, something that she is desperate to protect her kids from.

Finally we meet the Hanns. A family of 14 that live in Dundee and keep a close family spirit through their practice of Mormonism. To Mum Emma, having a child taken away from her at 18 when she was too young to have a real voice in the matter, has made her grateful to have as many children as she can. Money isn’t easy for them with dad working long shifts and mums whole day being spent washing the kids clothes, but they more than make up for it with love. They also have a few tricks of the trade to get them by, who needs 14 pork chops when you can just buy the whole pig!

He has to entrust his live on a rusty iron pulley and a worn plastic bag.

On the other side of the valley, on the summit of the mountain range, is where the sisters Helen and Mariela live. Isolated, and in the heart of the jungle. Eagles: The Kings of the Sky | Free Wildlife Documentary

Watch: The Golden Eagle: King of the Mountains here:

Whether in Alaska or in the Dolomites, eagles are generally seen as Kings of the skies. This film devotes itself on the one hand to the bald eagle, the heraldic bird of the United States, and on the other, the Golden Eagle, Europe's largest predatory bird. Many bald eagles live in the Chilkoot State Park in Alaska's south. In fact, more than 400 pairs reside there for the entire year. With a wingspan of some 2.5 metres, they are amongst the largest of their species. The offspring have to leave the eyrie by September at the latest, as then, winter sets in.

On clear, starry nights, one can experience the Northern Lights. There are certain places where especially many eagles group. 3000 to 4500 of them. Because, beneath the Chilkat ice blanket, chum salmon feel at home. The reason for this is the volcanic activity of the surrounding areas. Hot sources feed the different tributaries of the Chilkat. It is the fourth and final salmon migration of the year - nowhere else does this take place so late in the year.

This combination of ice-free water and spawning fish facilitates the survival of many young eagles through their first winter. In the Dolomites, we observe a Golden Eagle couple and their offspring. The strategy of hunter and hunted is impressively documented. For the very first time we experience a groundhog's fight for survival, attempting to flee the eagles' eyrie at a height of 2000 meters, despite the fact this means confrontation with the eagle's offspring. Golden Eagles have virtually conquered the entire northern hemisphere. But the future hunting grounds of the young eagles belongs to the most beautiful: the Dolomites - as majestic as the Kings of the skies.

  • 1929 Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression - Documentary

    58:36

Brief History of that other economic designed crash of 1929
    BBC documentary

On October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday hit Wall Street as investors traded some 16 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange in a single day. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out thousands of investors. In the aftermath of Black Tuesday, America and the rest of the industrialized world spiraled downward into the Great Depression (1929-39), the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world up to that time.

    1929 Stock Market Crash

During the 1920s, the U.S. stock market underwent rapid expansion, reaching its peak in August 1929, after a period of wild speculation. By then, production had already declined and unemployment had risen, leaving stocks in great excess of their real value. Among the other causes of the eventual market collapse were low wages, the proliferation of debt, a struggling agricultural sector and an excess of large bank loans that could not be liquidated.

Stock prices began to decline in September and early October 1929, and on October 18 the fall began. Panic set in, and on October 24, Black Thursday, a record 12,894,650 shares were traded. Investment companies and leading bankers attempted to stabilize the market by buying up great blocks of stock, producing a moderate rally on Friday. On Monday, however, the storm broke anew, and the market went into free fall. Black Monday was followed by Black Tuesday (October 29), in which stock prices collapsed completely and 16,410,030 shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange in a single day. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out thousands of investors, and stock tickers ran hours behind because the machinery could not handle the tremendous volume of trading.

1929 Stock Market Crash and the Great Depression

After October 29, 1929, stock prices had nowhere to go but up, so there was considerable recovery during succeeding weeks. Overall, however, prices continued to drop as the United States slumped into the Great Depression, and by 1932 stocks were worth only about 20 percent of their value in the summer of 1929. The stock market crash of 1929 was not the sole cause of the Great Depression, but it did act to accelerate the global economic collapse of which it was also a symptom. By 1933, nearly half of America’s banks had failed, and unemployment was approaching 15 million people, or 30 percent of the workforce.

  • Who were the Neanderthals? | DW Documentary

    42:26

Long before Homo sapiens populated the earth, the Neanderthals lived in Eurasia.
Now, paleoanthropologists in England and France are using new archeological methods to shed light on some previously unexplained Neanderthal mysteries.

In an age clouded by the mists of time, the first early humans colonized the Eurasian continent. They settled on land that had only recently been covered by glaciers. This species, called Neanderthals, died out about 30,000 years ago -- but at one time, they formed the largest group in an area that stretched from northern France to the Belgian coast and from the Channel Islands to southern England.

During the last Ice Age, the North Sea was frozen over -- and the English Channel was a small river that could easily be crossed on foot. The Neanderthals lived in close harmony with their perpetually changing environment. They had everything they needed to survive: the meat of prey animals, edible wild plants, water and wood for cooking and heating. How did these early humans develop over almost 300,000 years? What were their lives like before they became extinct?

Our documentary is based on the latest research. We investigate various populations of Neanderthals, and visit archaeological sites in northern France, southern England, and on the island of Jersey.

Renowned researchers such as the British paleoanthropologist Chris Stringer and his French colleague Ludovic Slimak describe how the Neanderthals lived, and discuss their cognitive abilities. Was this species capable of structured thinking? Did they have cultures, languages, and societies? How intelligent were they, and what sort of adaptive strategies kept them alive for 300,000 years? How similar were they to modern-day humans?

  • Transylvania: Between tradition and modernity | DW Documentary

    42:27

For 500 years, Transylvania’s Gábor people have held onto their values and rituals. This film explores the insular world of the Gábor Roma, and asks whether they can maintain their traditional lives in a globalized world.

The Romanian village of Karácsonyfalva is the center of the Gábor Roma community. More than 1,000 Gábor live there. The men wear large black hats, the women long skirts. The men travel all over Europe as traders, while the women raise the children. Most Gábor belong to the Adventist denomination. Many only learned to read in order to study the Bible. Abstaining from pork and above all from alcohol and tobacco makes them targets of curiosity. Considered aristocratic among the Roma people, the Gábor have their own laws in all areas of life. Problems are solved within the community; in cases of conflict, even the police turn to the community leaders. Their biggest and most important celebration is the wedding, the foundation of their society. Gábor marry exclusively among themselves. For this reason, girls are removed from school at age 11 and married at 14. Boys move from organized education to the school of life at 14. This documentary follows the marriage of 14-year-old Mundra to 16-year-old Bobbi, while giving a portrait of their families and the wider community. For the first time, they share an insight into their exciting, colorful, contradictory and insular world, in which wealth and poverty collide. This is a tight-knit community, one caught between tradition and the pressures of modernity.

  • Deadliest Roads | Bolivia | Free Documentary

    52:44

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Bolivia in 2007 (The very first episode of the series)
Criss-crossing the valleys of Bolivia, hundreds of metres above the ground, is a network of makeshift cables. Clinging onto these cables, coca growers whizz across the mountains, transporting their harvest. Should they slip or the aged cables snap, they face certain death. Once they’ve reached the other side of the mountain, the danger doesn’t end. The coca then has to be transported along the ’Camino de la Muerte’, or Highway of Death’. It’s the only route connecting La Paz, Bolivia’s administrative capital, with the Amazon Basin. And it’s officially the most dangerous road in the world.

  • How coronavirus is changing the world | DW Documentary

    46:50

How are democracies and authoritarian states reacting to the coronavirus pandemic? An investigative team is looking for clues worldwide and interviewing virologists, health experts and citizens. Where is the fight against COVID-19 working and where isn’t it?

Nine months after the new coronavirus first appeared, the documentary The Pandemic Spreads finds some initial answers to these questions. The film takes the viewer on a journey around the world: We dive into seven different countries and analyze their ways of handling the virus. We return to the putative beginnings of the pandemic in Wuhan in China. We see how Taiwan reacted to the virus earlier and more decisively than almost any other country in the world, as Europe and North America were still lulling themselves into a false sense of security. In retrospect, it is clear that the Western democracies saw the coronavirus as a local Chinese problem for far too long. Yet research from France and other European countries suggest it was probably already among us here in Europe at the end of 2019. Our viral world tour also takes us to the outsiders of the pandemic: Sweden, for example. At first the Swedes' special approach was still seen as daring, but months later it seems to have gone disastrously wrong. The biggest health and economic crisis in recent history has underlined recent global political developments: as the world power USA sinks into corona chaos, its rival China seems to have hit its stride. Will Beijing’s authoritarian regime come out on top of the crisis through its aggressive and consistent approach to the virus? The Pandemic Spreads shows how COVID-19 is changing our world for good.

  • Most Dangerous Ways To School | OIMJAKON | Free Documentary

    48:00

Siberia. Endless vastness – arctic temperatures. Even farther East than Japan and 5 000 kilometres north of Vladivostok lies Yakutia, the coldest republic of Russia. Yakutsk is the capital of the Yakutia republic and is located about 5100 kilometres east of Moscow. In the midst of it: Oimjakon. With its 500 residents the coldest inhabited place on earth. This village lies in a mountain valley on the upper reaches of the banks of the Indgirka River. One of the major reasons for the freezing temperatures is the great distance from the Atlantic Ocean and the humidity that the Ocean provides to a major part of the Northern Hemisphere. Masses of mountains shield Siberia against the warm air from the west and south, while in the opposite direction, the door to the Artic stands wide open. Thus in the winter, cold masses of air expand into the Siberian landscape completely unrestricted.

The average temperature in winter: Minus 40° Celsius. The children of the Siberian Oimjakon have the world`s coldest way to school. The extreme living conditions are completely normal for the residents of Oymyakon. This is also true for the Tariks family and their son Aljosha. He is 8 years old. The children of his age group are only excused from attending school on account of the cold at temperatures below minus 54° degrees.

Even before his departure for school Aljosha feels the grim cold. Lacking running water the house also has no bathroom. So Aljosha alredy has to go outside – to the unheated outside earth closet in the garden. Sascha’s mother cooks tea. In order to do so, she must go to outside to the front of the house, which is made of wood- as all houses in Oymyakon. Due to the great temperature differences here, concrete walls would soon crack and be destroyed. In the short summers, it can get quite warm in Oymyakon. In front of the wooden house the ice blocks are stored. The next-door farmer had cut out of the frozen river for them. There is no running water in the Pole of Cold, with temperatures dropping to -65 degrees Celsius; no pipe work has a chance. Aljoshas mother puts the ice in the pot and cooks some tea for her son.

Like every day, Aljosha must get ready to go to school. Like the majority of the other students, Sascha wears for the most part his traditional dress. The clothing prescribes to the onion-peel principle in order to protect the students from the Artic temperatures. His mother Irina has heated up the living room to 20° degrees. So when Aljosha opens the front door it is 70° degrees colder – every day life in Oimjakon. As soon as the children open the dormitory’s double doors, the icy cold brutally grabs hold of them. Within less than one second their nostrils become frozen.

Unlike the students in other parts of the world, the children from Oymyakon are seldom playful but instead very concentrated on their way to school. With quick steps, they travel in groups, attempting to put the 2 kilometer route behind them as quickly as possible. There are no signs of snow ball fights. The don’t spend a second of time watching the cows, which are kept up to nine months of the year in their stalls, and are now coincidentally being lead out of the barn for a drink. Even though the cows are wearing some sort of special “bras” which protect their udders from freezing.

Once in school building, Aljosha and the other students remove many of their layers of clothing, and get going with the school lessons. For the majority of them, a welcome diversion from the coldest inhabited town on the earth.

The night is half of our lives. But how much do we really know about it, and its impact on us here in Singapore?
