  • Inside Norways $47 Billion Floating Highway

    10:29

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is in the process of creating the world’s first floating highway. The Coastal Highway Route E39 will cut down a 21 hour travel time between the Norwegian cities of Kristiansand in the south and Trondheim in the north by at least half through the elimination of seven different ferry crossings. These crossings will be replaced with bridges, tunnels, and the innovative new Submerged Floating Tube Bridges which give the Coastal road its nickname. But Norway has its work cut out for it, as a project of this size and scale with the use of the floating tunnels has yet to be completed anywhere else in the world-- and attempting the historic roadway project will cost more than $47 billion.

With many fjords to safely traverse, the project is getting help from Universities, researchers and engineers all over the country. Though the project isn’t expected to be completed until 2050, they’ve already got a head start on constructing their first floating tunnel called the Rogaland Fixed Link or Rogfast. While the construction has allowed them to work out some kinks, it’s also cost $2 billion so far-- and that budget is growing. Norway aims to maintain its pristine natural beauty with these hidden highways, but first they have to figure out how travelers can remain safe at 150 feet underwater. Check out our video for all the details on this innovative new highway-- and how the rest of the world may soon follow in Norway’s footsteps.

  • Black Holes of Yamal | RT Documentary

    25:14

Russian scientists are working to solve the mystery surrounding enormous craters that have appeared in the Yamal tundra. When giant holes began forming in 2013, it wasn’t clear what was causing them. The ground exploded spontaneously, frightening indigenous Nenets people. One witness described it as if “the earth was breathing.”

Nenets reindeer herding communities say the ‘black holes’ are the work of otherworldly forces. Having relied on the harsh tundra for generations, they know it’s better to live in harmony with Mother Nature. They say it could be a bad omen or a warning from “heavenly, earthly, or underworld” powers. Other theories have proliferated in the media, claiming the Yamal craters could be the result of meteor strikes, missile blasts, or even an alien invasion!

So far researchers have identified 17 of these mysterious craters that are up to 30 metres deep and are trying to establish their cause. The Yamal peninsula is a land of permanently frozen ground increasingly affected by global warming, but this is the only permafrost zone where mysterious craters have formed.

Russian researchers think the process likely begins with a buildup of gas trapped under the surface, as explosions are preceded by the appearance of small hills.

With the help of satellite images and 3D models, researchers are also learning to predict where new craters will appear next. The Yamal craters pose a threat not only to the local Nenets population, but potentially gas extraction fields as well.

We discussed the curious Yamal craters with Nenets people, as well as Russian scientists who are closer than ever to untangling this geological mystery.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Bolivia: The Road Of Death

    52:21

There are two worlds in Bolivia. That of the Altiplano, the highlands, perched at an altitude of more than 4000 meters. And that of the Amazon basin, which tops out at a few hundred meters above sea level. Between the two, there is a transition region, made of vertiginous precipices and trails that descend the Andean Cordillera in a few tens of kilometers. . It is the region of the Yungas, a country where the horizontal does not exist. In these valleys winds a road, the only means of communication between La Paz, the administrative capital of the country, perched on the Altiplano, and the riches of the Amazon basin. The Bolivians nicknamed it el camino de la muerte, the road to death. Highest point: the La Cumbre pass, 4700 meters, at the exit of La Paz. 78 kilometers further, we are barely 900 meters. Along this road of the impossible, we follow the story of a community of cocaleros, coca growers clinging to the slopes of the mountain. To carry their loads to the road, they stretched makeshift cables made of simple iron wires across the valley. An infernal zip line, nearly 400 meters long, 200 meters above the ground. We also share the daily life of a vachero, a truck driver who transports cows from the Amazon basin to La Paz, the highest metropolis in the world. 25 hours of journey on the road to death, done without stopping. Because you have to go very quickly: if a cow dies, the driver pays.

    43:57

Pearl of the Carribean: The British Virgin Islands | Free Documentary Nature

The British Virgin Islands belong to the Lesser Antilles and are a dream for bon-vivants and the super-rich: Caribbean nonchalance, combined with British understatement. Moko Jumbies, mysterious spectre ejectors, dancing in the light of the fire. They are fantastic entities on stilts, more than four metres tall. The group only takes commands from Shevorn, a descendent of the slaves that the Dutch once abducted to the Virgin Islands.
The slaves brought something new with them to the Caribbean: the belief in ghosts. The services of the Moko Jumbies are still sought after to this day. On uninhabited Salt Island, Alexandra Durante harvests salt from the lagoon. Back home on Tortola, the largest island in the archipelago, she boils and stirs bath essences and other homemade beauty products out of the gained sea salt. In the Callwood distillery in Sugar Cane Bay, Callum and Andrew heat up an old copper vat. A few hours later and a fine trickle flows out of a narrow pipe: rum!
Another bay further on, Egbert Donovan plucks the strings of his ukulele: Soca music with a stomping rhythm and sparse lyrics. This is how Egbert unwinds after working on his lifetime project, the Molluscs Museum.

  • The Tulip Bubble | DOCUMENTARY | Flower Industry | Tulip Business | Flowers | English

    52:08

The Tulip Bubble - The events in the Netherlands in the spring of 1637 were the first examples of speculative frenzy taking over a marketplace. Of course many more were to follow in the history of the world’s economics. But this one is special, a beautiful stand-alone, in a garden of falling graphs and rising statistics. In 1637, many Dutch citizens sold all they had for a few bulbs or ‘paper promises’ of potential tulip bulbs that didn’t even exist.

    The Tulip Bubble (2013)
    Star: Sean Pertwee
    Genres: Documentary | History
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Release Date: 2013 (USA)

    Storyline:
What happened in the Netherlands in 1637 is the blueprint for many examples of speculative frenzies in the world's history: in an incomparable attack of collective madness and boundless greed, the country's citizens put their money into market speculation - involving derivatives, futures, options and investment certificates - all for tulip bulbs. People sold all they had for a few plants or financial products involving the plants' bulbs. The prices and market values of these colorful blossoms soared. Some bulbs were sold for the same price as a grand villa. How could such an enormous bubble arise from nowhere? Particularly, as it was based upon such a delicate and short-lived plant? Astronomically high, fake profits led to a full-blown crash in which market values fell by 95 percent in record time. When Tulips became the vogue in Holland in the early 17th century, flower peddlers were soon faced with a problem: the demand for tulip bulbs was greater than the supply. Then they had an idea: Why not sell options to purchase bulbs than didn't even exist yet? For the first time ever, option certificates were issued for products that would be made in the future. Of course, trade in these certificates followed soon after that. Prices hit the roof. Investors sold all they had or mortgaged their houses to purchase futures of tulip bulbs. Early in February 1637 one of the many auctions for tulip bulbs was held at an inn in Haarlem. For the first time ever, a seller failed to receive the asking price for his bulbs. Suddenly, everyone realized that the prices wouldn't continue to climb. The news spread like wildfire. Everyone tried to unload their holdings as soon as possible, especially speculators who had borrowed money or purchased futures. Within a short period the prices dropped by 95 percent. Modern-day financial crises have shown how quickly individuals can lose their senses when they believe there are profits to be made. If we can invest in hog bellies or real estate, then why not tulips too?

    Expedition Antarctica | Science Documentary

Antarctica: Ready for Winter: Antarctica: Ready for Winter:

In February 2008, a team of the world’s leading marine scientists set out onboard the RV Tangaroa on a voyage like no other across the Great Southern Ocean to Antarctica. In the footsteps of Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition, their mission is to discover more about marine life in Antarctic waters. This is unchartered territory – as many scientists say… ‘less is known about the Antarctic seabed than the surface of Mars!’ Cooped up on a research vessel for 50 days they battle ferocious storms, some of the worst ice conditions ever encountered and personal tragedy. The stakes are high but this is science at the edge. If successful their findings could profoundly affect all our lives as the intrepid crew seek out clues about the future fate of our planet beneath the icy waters of one of the world’s most perilous yet most important oceans.

  • What happened to Otto Warmbier in North Korea? | DW Documentary

    42:26

US student Otto Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years in a North Korean labor camp in 2016. Warmbier was released the following year, but he died of brain damage shortly after his return to the United States. Was he really the victim of torture?

Otto Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years hard labor in 2016 after being convicted of attempting to steal a propaganda poster during a trip to Pyongyang. Just over a year on he was dead, having been sent home to the US in a vegetative state. US President Donald Trump tweeted that he had been tortured beyond belief in North Korea. The US president blamed both the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the Obama administration for Warmbier’s death - and Trump appeared before the media with the student’s parents. This was at the peak of the North Korean missile crisis. Later, as relations between Trump and Kim Jong Un became warmer, the US president changed his tune. In 2019 Trump said that he believed that Kim did not know what happened to the US student much to the consternation of Warmbier’s parents.

What really happened to Otto Warmbier in North Korea? Veteran foreign correspondent Klaus Scherer sets out to try to find out. In the documentary, Scherer interviews a number of people with knowledge of the case who have been largely unheard up to now. He shows that a US court investigating a liability case against North Korea brought by Warmbier’s parents also ignored important witnesses, who continue to cast doubt on the torture allegations. These include the coroner in Cincinnati who examined Warmbier’s body. She believes that the account given by North Korean doctors is credible. They claim that Warmbier had inadvertently been given too high a dose of sedatives by prison staff. This, the medics say was the cause of his state of unresponsive wakefulness. Could Trump’s initial torture charges simply have been motivated by political opportunism?

  • Tour of the Arctic – from Greenland to Alaska | DW Documentary

    42:26

Two film crews explore the spectacular wilderness of the Arctic. The people who live there face dramatic changes. Part two takes viewers from East Greenland to Alaska.

The region around the North Pole is one of the greatest and least-known wildernesses in the world - and it’s rapidly changing due to global warming. 350 people, most of them Inuit, live in Ittoqqortoormiit in Greenland. The nearest settlement is on neighboring Iceland. Almost 800 kilometers of Arctic Ocean separate the two islands. The film team accompanies an Inuit family through Scoresby Sound, a fjord system on the eastern coast of Greenland. They travel hundreds of kilometers in small boats through pack ice, passing icebergs as high as skyscrapers. On the way they meet whalers who are hunting for narwhals in summer. In this Inuit culture, narwhal skin and polar bear goulash have ensured survival for thousands of years. Greenpeace and WWF activists want to stop whaling and polar bear hunting - but this poses a threat to the indigenous way of life on Greenland. On the expedition through the world's largest fjord system, the team learns about the consequences of global warming: melting permafrost and a rapid increase in greenhouse gases. The changes are worrying. Some say they have brought benefits to the far north — the ice breaks up earlier and so too does the hunting season. However, the risks outweigh this benefit. The knowledge and way of life that have been passed down from generation to generation may soon be unsustainable.

The Aurora Province is located on the East-Central part of Luzon Island, the main Island of the Philippines. The province of Aurora covers the eastern portion of the Sierra Madre Mountains, hence it is generally mountainous. Its coastline spans 332 kilometres in length. Aurora is a province blessed with an abundance of tourist attractions. It has its share of historical sites such as the home and resthouse of former Phil-ippine President Manuel L. Quezon. The province also has a beautiful Catholic church and several historical markers. Its natural attractions include picturesque waterfalls, lush greenery on mountainsides, and panoramic beaches. Surfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, mountain climb-ing and trekking are only some of the activities you can enjoy in Aurora. So the displeasing dances of former head hunters can be admired as well as the work of highly talented artists of today's time. The population lives predominantly on farming and skilled crafts. It is conspicuous how engaged scientists work out solutions for an eco-logical lasting way of managing agriculture and to increase the conser-vation management. The influence of Spanish conquerors in Auroras history is still present at many places trough to the architectural style of historic buildings. Also a big Part of the population is Catholic.

The Castle Builders - Episode 1: Masters & Masons - How Medieval Castles Were Built | History Documentary

Watch 'Castle Builders - Episode 2' here:

Castles – citadels of world heritage. All over Europe, millions flock to see these masterpieces in stone.
They are drawn by the astonishing scale of construction – and by a sense of a lost world of heroism and chivalry. But castles are more than magnificent monuments to a past that’s dead and gone. They hold the key to understanding a crucial period in the growth of our civilisation.

In this first episode, we’ll see how some of the great castles of Europe were built, and how the ideas and techniques behind their construction changed and developed in a few short centuries. Kings and barons found the resources and manpower to start building castles, and spent fortunes on finishing them – and all of this happened at on a huge scale, at a frenetic pace, and often in the heart of hostile territory.

We’ll meet the Castle Builders – the labourers and masons who did the hard work; the geniuses of design who imagined them, the structural engineers who turned them into reality; and the kings and barons who commissioned them and lived in them.

We’ll travel from Richard the Lionheart’s astonishing Chateau Gauillard in Normandy to the ‘layered’ defences of Caerphilly – the first castle in Britain built to be defended by walls within walls – and around Edward I’s massive ‘ring of iron’ that gripped North Wales.

Large-scale dramatic reconstructions and state-of-the-art computer graphics will give us a thrilling sense of how all of these mediaeval mega-structures were designed and built.

Skagerrak - Europe's Unique Marine Animal Habitat | Free Nature Documentary

Watch 'Vicious Beauties - The Secret World of the Jellyfish' here:

The strait that connects the North Sea with the Baltic, with depths of over 700 meters, is notorious for its dangerously strong currents. But currents also mean food and therefore nourishment for the large swarms of fish that inhabit the region. The sea grass meadows are comparable with those off the Californian coast.
Harbour seals, grey seals and orcas hunt here, as do the rare black mouth cat shark and porpoises. Close by, catfish mate, which in itself is quite spectacular and never caught on film in this way before. Lion's mane jellyfish with nettle threads of up to 30 meters in length make their way through the open sea.
Skagerrak's coastal regions are amongst the most beautiful and varied in Europe and boast one of the world's great bird paradises. Oystercatchers, sandwich and arctic terns are more plentiful here than anywhere else in Europe. The infinitely long dune landscape of the Skagerrak, is Denmark's answer to the skerries of the Swedish and Norwegian coasts.
Large seal colonies can be found in the isolation of the small, picturesque islands and one can come face to face with the animals. In this rough, yet infinitely beautiful landscape, the many streams and rivers that open out into the Skagerrak, are quite remarkable. We accompany salmon in an equally beautiful river landscape and meet with ospreys and sea eagles and eventually come face to face with a brown bear mother and her little ones.

  • Asteroids – a new El Dorado in space? | DW Documentary

    42:24

Mining on asteroids sounds like the stuff of science fiction, but it could soon become a reality. Nations and powerful corporations already have plans for such ventures and are hard at work staking their claim to resources from space.

How can economic growth continue unfettered once all the earth's resources have been consumed? Major companies and governments have long been working on plans to exploit the resources to be found in the vastness of space. How far are humans from achieving this? This documentary examines the technological requirements of space mining. It also assesses how great the desire is to find new sources of raw materials. The film touches on scientific and fundamental societal issues - including humanity’s craving for new territories and our degradation of the Earth as we attempt to exploit all our planet has to offer.

  • From an African refugee camp to the US | DW Documentary

    42:26

An American dream comes true for a Congolese family and their friend. After more than 20 years in an African refugee camp they start a new life in the United States. With courage and humor, they navigate the challenges of their new life.

The first time in an airplane, the first time on an escalator ... these everyday situations are part of something much more for Jean-Pierre, his family, and his friend Isaiah. Their departure after 20 years living in a refugee camp is a moment of happiness, but also one of deep emotion. Because of the brutal civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the group had long ago given up hope of a better life. But eventually, they made their way via Uganda to the United States, thanks to a special UN refugee program. As they begin their new life, they are assisted by social workers specializing in integration. Their experiences reveal a lot about American society, like when a social worker praises sugary soft drinks in a supermarket, prompting Jean-Pierre to comment on how unhealthy the American diet is. One Way Ticket is a heart-warming documentary by Gregoire Gosset depicting brave and charismatic immigrants as they begin a new life.

  • The Aliens In Our Coral Reefs | Real Wild

    48:05

Coral reefs are some of the richest hotspots of biodiversity on the planet. The warm water reefs of the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea are well know, but they don't only occur in warm waters. In some of the oceans coldest, darkest depths they are thriving. The deep water reefs are formed by icebergs as they slide across the sea bed, leaving behind perfect foundations for coral to build upon. Hidden from view, they criss cross the planet from the deep water tropics to the freezing Arctic. Some have never been explored by humans. Underwater cameramen have ventured down to the pitch blackness to find life thriving. In this one hour HD special, our team will enter this alien environment. And discover a strange, hidden world abundant with life, from the weird to the wonderful.
