  • 15 Largest Abandoned Cities In The World!

Since the dawn of time, man has come up with wonderful ideas that turn out to be short-lived, poorly executed or just straight-up stupid. But for city planners, there must be something even more painful about your perfectly-constructed city being left to rot without the appreciation it deserved. In today's episode, we're exploring Wonderland Eurasia, also known as Ankapark.
Opened in March 2019, the park has 17 rollercoasters, the second-most worldwide. However, the extent of the problems affecting the park became apparent very quickly. Two days after the park opened, a train got stuck on top of a roller coaster, and the passengers were forced to leave the merry-go-round on foot.
Eventually, less than a year after its opening, in February 2020, the park could not pay its 180 thousand dollars accumulated electricity debt. The electricity of the park was cut off, leaving the park closed for good.
The failure is total. 750 million dollars to realize this extravagant mega-project are thrown in the trash.

Wonderland Eurasia has now lowered the curtain, leaving rusting expensive statues and rides and a strong sense of bitterness in place. What was supposed to become a symbol of pride for Turkey, has become a symbol of the mismanagement and hubris of some officials of the presidential party.

Today, we venture our way inside Wonderland and give you an exclusive peek of this gigantic deserted amusement park.

  • The Worlds Largest ABANDONED Amusement Park | Wonderland Eurasia

Wonderland Eurasia also known as ankapark is the largest theme park in Europe and the second largest in the world. Sitting the middle of the capital of Turkey this $750,000,000 park sits completely abandoned with every attraction, every gift, as well a all of the food completely deserted. Construction started in 2013 on Ataturks forest farm and zoo land and halted several times until 2019 when the park finally decided it was time to open up. Sadly a lack of attendance and financial struggles caused the theme park to close its doors for good only 11 months after the grand opening. The park is now a waste land surrounded by security guards. This is our journey to the largest abandoned theme park in the world.

    Burj Al Babas

Many people have dreamed about living in a Disney-style castle, so why are 399 of them sitting empty in Turkey? A luxury housing development near Mudurnu in Turkey, called Burj al Babas, was half completed in January 2019, when the developers, Sarot Property Group, went bankrupt. The construction of the chateaux was underway in 2014, aimed at wealthy holidaymakers who wanted to set up a home away from home. While a handful of them were sold, the majority weren’t, and several investors pulled out.

The company that built the properties is around $25 million in debt, and the construction was halted. Since then, the Turkish government has developed new building regulations, which means that these castles may no longer comply. In some areas, housing developments must fit into existing neighborhoods and must be low-rise. These castles don’t tick either of those boxes. Still, the developers are hopeful that if they sell just 100 castles, they can clear their debt. The houses are not all that feature in
Burj Al Babas, either. Alongside holiday homes, there is an entertainment complex and Turkish baths. For the average wealthy Gulf tourist, this town could have been the epitome of luxury. Who knows, it still might be one day.

Around 40,000 people used to live in Akarmara, Georgia, but if you happen to visit the township, you’ll only find visitors like yourself and few actual residents. Akarmara used to be a mining town, but the unprofitability of the coal industry took its toll. With the end of the USSR around the same time, resident numbers dwindled, and mines shut down. By the 1990s, the siege of Tkvarcheli caused Akarmara to be cut off from the rest of Abkhazia for over 400 days, which meant supplies had to be helicoptered in.

That spelled the beginning of the end for the once-thriving township. While tens of thousands of people used to live here, now mere hundreds do. Four and five-story apartments now only have one or two families living in them, and the town is slowly disintegrating. There has been talk of Akarmara becoming a resort town, but the chances of getting funding to make it happen are low. Therefore, tourists visit to take a look around, view the mines, then head back to Abkhazia. For now,
it remains a unique location for tourists, but not somewhere you’d be likely to lay down roots.

    12. Pyramiden, Norway
Despite being located in Norway, Pyramiden is Russian in origin. This abandoned mining village is located north of the Arctic Circle, on the Svalbard archipelago -- in other words, near the top of the world.

    11. Houtouwan, China
Houtouwan is an abandoned fishing settlement on China’s Shengshan Island, roughly 40 miles (64.4 km) from Shanghai. Nearly every building is overrun with lush vegetation, making Houtouwan possibly the “greenest” abandoned settlement on Earth.

Located in southern California’s San Bernardino County, Calico is a legitimate ghost town in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert. It was founded in 1881 as a silver mining town, and in the mid-1880s, Calico served as the epicenter of California’s silver industry.

Tens of thousands of residents were evacuated from Pripyat, Ukraine following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986, and the entire city remains uninhabited today, over 35 years later.

    8. Craco, Italy
Located in southern Italy’s Matera Province, Craco is a hillside ghost town that was founded in the 8th century and persisted until relatively recently, when its last remaining residents fled in 1991.

    7. Burj Al Babas, Turkey
Located roughly halfway between Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, and its capital, Ankara, is Burj Al Babas, an abandoned hillside development consisting of 732 pristine-looking, miniature, castle-like chalets, all in various states of completion.

    6. Oradour-Sur-Glane
Oradour-Sur-Glane was a village in France that met its demise at the hands of the Germans in 1944, during World War II. Altogether 642 residents perished, and the village’s remains were preserved under the direction of President Charles de Gaulle, who ordered that Oradour-Sur-Glane be permanently memorialized.

    5. Kolmanskop, Namibia
Located in southern Africa’s Namib Desert, Kolmanskop is, perhaps, one of the eeriest abandoned towns a person could ever hope to find. It’s filled with old houses and businesses, which were simply abandoned “as is” before the desert sand moved in and took over the formerly bustling town.

    4. Centralia, Pennsylvania
This town has been on fire for over 50 years!! In what arguably best qualifies as a “near ghost town,” Centralia, Pennsylvania boasted less than five residents as of 2017. Back in 1980, just 40 years ago, Centralia’s population numbered over 1,000.

    3. Wanli UFO Village, Taiwan
Located roughly an hour away from Taipei, northern Taiwan’s Wanli UFO Village is an abandoned holiday resort that, to this day, remains shrouded in mystery.

    2. Bodie, California
Bodie is a ghost town situated east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Mono County, California, roughly 75 miles (121 km) southeast of Lake Tahoe. This abandoned settlement, which became a boomtown in 1876 following the discovery of gold, sits at an altitude of 8,379 feet (2,554 meters).

    1. The Underground City
Answer: For those of you who guessed, it’s Derinkuyu!! This place was enormous, with a vast network of tunnels and caves big enough to house around 20,000 people!! A family discovered this place in 1963 while doing some home renovations. Knock out a wall, and it turns out there is a whole ancient city behind it!

    10. Ordos Kangbashi, China
Located in Inner Mongolia, Ordos Kangbashi was built to be a modern city with state-of-the-art architecture, large stadiums, and gorgeous public spaces. The city achieved all that in just under 10 years, but it failed to attract people.

    9. Hashima Island, Japan
Despite what people think, Japan is not just one unified land mass of a country, they have several islands off their coasts that they have colonized over the years. One of which is now abandoned and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Hashima Island.

    8. Wittenoom, Australia
There are all sorts of reasons for a city to be abandoned, but in the cause of Wittenoom in Australia, it was a situation that all but required it for the safety of those that once lived in it. For the record, the city is located north-north-east of Perth in the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

    7. Alcatraz
While not a town per se, the island known as Alcatraz most definitely has played an interesting role in the history of the United States. Mainly because the island off the coast of San Francisco was home to one of the most famous prisons in the history of the world. Alcatraz was a maximum security prison, meant to house the worst of the worst.

    6. Ruby, Arizona
On the surface, Ruby Arizona appears to be just another Wild West town of the 19th and 20th centuries that had its heyday and then slowly went into obscurity. For a time that might have been true, as the place had a mine that was full of gold, silver, lead, and more. But eventually, it became a place of crime, mainly via the Ruby Murders that took place all around the town.

    5. Kennecott, Alaska
Nowadays, Kennecott, Alaska is a town that is within a national park. Wrangell–St. Elias. Which just so happens to be the biggest national park in all of the United States. In fact, it's so big that it's larger than Switzerland in terms of area.

    4. Pripyat, Ukraine
The Chernobyl disaster left its mark on the world when it had a failure back in 1986. But without a doubt the biggest casualty of the entire region was that of Pripyat in the Ukraine. At the time, Pripyat was a booming city, even having an amusement park in it because of the amount of people there.

    3. Craco, Italy
Depending on what you view film-wise, you'll likely recognize Craco, Italy in movies like The Passion of The Christ and King David. The town itself is built onto a summit, and was done so for defensive reasons. Because of this, the town is quite unique in its looks.

    2. Glenrio, New Mexico and Texas
The idea of a road making a place a ghost town may sound odd, but when a town used to bank on the popularity of Route 66, one of the most famous roads ever, you start to understand what happened. At one time, Route 66 was the popular way to get from New Mexico to Texas and vice versa. It was a long stretch at times though, so towns like Glenrio were the oasis in the deserts that people could go to for gas, food, drinks, and more.

    1. Centralia, Pennsylvania
Sometimes a great accident can cause unexpected circumstances, which is what happened to Centralia, Pennsylvania in 1962. During that year, the small town was trying to burn away their local landfill. Which for the record is a very common practice when done correctly. But when the act was done, a part of it seeped through an unknown hole in the landfill and went straight into the town's coal mines.

Whether the result of nuclear disaster, war or erosion, or maybe even an industry’s or empire’s downfall, several cities around the globe—from the Far East to North America—have become abandoned, some practically overnight. In a few cases, failed ventures to create a glossy real-estate development have resulted in a blank canvas with little to no population.
But to know these former towns is to understand our global history. Some of them feature the shells of abandoned buildings; raw, unmanicured landscapes; and the absence of people. All, however, are a photographer’s dream. If any of these towns look or sound familiar, here’s why: Many were used as filming locations well after their demise. Below, Today’s video surveys some of the most stunning abandoned towns around the world. If nothing else, these locales will make you appreciate the buzz of activity in the city you live in—however big or small it may be.

This city came to fruition after private mining companies were given the rights to dig into deposits in the late 90’s and 2000’s. This generated a lot of tax revenue making Ordos the 2nd highest income per capita city in China. Ordos is a city located in Inner Mongolia that has been constantly been burdened with water shortage issues. Instead of trying to revamp the current infrastructure the Chinese government decided to rebuild the city from scratch which is called “New Ordos” just 16 miles or 25 km kilometers away from the existing city now called “Old Ordos”. The people of Old Ordos refer to New Ordos as the Kangbashi district of Ordos, these new and old labels are basically not supported by anyone locally. Two villages built around the Wulan Mulan River were demolished and construction started in 2005. 161 billion dollars in infrastructure was invested to build the Kangbashi District over the first 5 years. Regardless if anyone lives in this new city, this is a major plus to the government of China as it increases China’s GDP. The government gave kickbacks to developers who helped boost GDP so building anything anywhere is promoted.

The old city of Ordos or Dongsheng is home to over ½ a million people, it was expected that many of them would move to the new city as it became completed. As explained by many locals, a working couple only makes $800 a month combined of which ⅓ is taken for rent. The new apartments in New Ordos sell for 70 - 100 thousand dollars making it virtually impossible for locals to live there. Sales were slow at first but eventually investors snapped up many of the units in the new city. This has left New Ordos with a ton of infrastructure and no residents. The city was originally designed to hold 1 million people but was scaled down during construction to 500,000 then to 300,000 after coal prices crashed.

The city features a 5 story shopping mall, impressive monuments and statues, art and city museum, the Ordos Dongsheng Stadium that seats 35,000 people, opera house, a brand new airport and a modern designed mosque. The city streets are lined with skyscraper after skyscraper that are almost completely empty. A toy store is one of the only stores in the massive 5 story mall, the man who runs the store says he sells something every few days and if the government doesn’t step in soon to fix it, he may have to move back to Dongsheng. It is estimated only 2 % of the buildings were ever filled the rest remain abandoned. Outside the mall an elaborate water show is put on every night with only a few people found to be watching it. A water show this size in a normal city would draw thousands of viewers daily. The city has everything it needs to be a great thriving new city like extra wide roads with bike lanes like what is found in Taipei, modern amenities and infrastructure but simply no people. The initial wave of 30,000 people that moved to New Ordos all lived in a 4 to 5 block radius just north of central park. A few years later that grew to 60,000 and now 12 years after the start of construction there are around 150,000 residents in a city that was originally designed for 1 million. The city has been doing many things to attract people to live there like moving the best schools from Dongsheng to Kangbashi. While some areas of Kangbashi aren’t a ghost town at all today, many still are. One abandoned project is the Ordos 100 Project, which is a project that was to have 100 different extreme luxury villas designed. Instead of the government doing it themselves they invited 100 different architects from around the world to each design a luxury villas to be placed on the map. Land sections were given out with the utmost creative freedom except the design was not to look like traditional Mongolian designs such as Yurts. Each architect designed their villa and construction started. Within the Ordos 100 Project site multiple half finished villas can be found. While many lay half finished some have progress going forward.

  • Inside the abandoned buildings under Lake Mead

In the 1930s engineers designed the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas, taming the Colorado River and giving a reliable water supply for California, Nevada, and Arizona.

Without that water, the Phoenix of today would not exist.

When the work was finished, many of the plants used to make and mix the concrete needed to build the dam were partially dismantled, abandoned, and flooded by what is now Lake Mead.

  • Why are there dozens of ghost cities in China? | The World

Fancy villas, high-rise apartment blocks, lakes, parks and sprawling road networks: ghost cities in China have it all — except people. To some, the empty sprawls are a sign of a Chinese debt crisis, but to others it shows China's thinking one step ahead.

  • Chinas Largest Ghost City | Western Media Forgot | Ordos Kangbashi District 康巴什区

    #chinadrone #chinascities #ghostcities #ordos #kangbashi
Is ORDOS, Kangbashi District China -- a Ghost City?, a town in the middle of barren Inner Mongolia deserts, once found itself stuck with rows of newly built but vacant apartment buildings, earning a nationwide reputation as a guicheng, or ghost town. 添加了中文字幕

We have worked very hard on this project called |???? CChina's Largest Ghost City | Ordos Kangbashi District 康巴什区. Over 50 hours of production time.

Now the district in the city of Ordos is back. Having sold previously empty apartments, Kangbashi town is building more high-rise complexes. We're not a ghost town anymore, a local property sales manager said with a laugh.

We have included samples of the Asian financial crisis in the video. The opening clip shows the devastation of how irresponsible lending can leave even cities like Bangkok with many ghost towers. The video goes on to explain how China plays an important role in world real estate and how it proves it can bring a city back from disaster.

The secret to the reversal of the town's fortunes is the intense competition among high school students, and their parents, to be accepted into China's top universities. Once municipal officials moved some of the city's top schools into Kangbashi, the so-called tiger parents followed and property prices -- along with new investment -- soared.

The Lee Plaza was built in 1929 in Detroit, Michigan constructed as an upscale apartment with hotel services. The Lee Plaza closed down in 1997* and has been abandoned since.
1981 is actually the year the Lee Plaza was added the U.S. register of historic places.
In 1968 the city of Detroit turned the Lee Plaza into a nursing home but began loosing residents in the 1980s.

    10: Kalavantin Durg, India
India is home to one of the most incredible abandoned places that you have probably never heard of. The Kalavantin Durg is an abandoned fortress at the very top of a massive mound of earth. Located in Maharashtra, it sits high up in the air, about 2,300 feet (701 m) above sea level, shrouded in clouds and mystery.

    9: Nara Dreamland, Japan
What is creepier than an abandoned amusement park? I vote nothing. The first thing that comes to mind when I think of a forsaken theme park is a legion of vagrant clowns with runny makeup and boot knives strapped to their ankles. If that doesn't rouse at least a bit of fear, you are tougher than I am.

    8: Power Station, Belgium
Europe can be a pretty spooky place sometimes, especially with all the old crypts and abandoned tunnels you are likely to see on your day tour of Rome or Paris. However, one of the most fascinating abandoned places is located in Monceau-sur-Sambre, Belgium.

    7: Fort Alexander, Russia
Fort Alexander is one of the coolest, and weirdest abandoned places in the world for many reasons. Located on an island in the Baltic Sea, this bean shaped fort looks like some sort of prison colony. It was actually used as a research laboratory focused on studying the plague until some researchers were accidentally infected. It is now nicknamed “plague fort”.

    6: Hashima Island, Japan
Hashima island located in Nagasaki, also known as Battleship Island, used to be a bustling city full of thousands of coal miners. It might look familiar if you’re a James Bond fan like me, as it was used as the inspiration for the villain's lair in the 2012 film Skyfall. Are you a James Bond fan? Which James Bond was your favorite? Let me know in the comments below!!

    5: Tyrone House, Ireland
This great abandoned manor house is a reminder of days gone by. This once prosperous house is now besieged by moss and left vulnerable to mother nature.
You will find the Tyrone House in Galway overlooking the mighty Atlantic Ocean. This is one of the most beautiful plots of land you could ever hope to afford. The house was originally built in 1779 by Christopher St. George, from a prosperous family.

    4: Baron Empain Palace, Egypt
What is spookier than an abandoned palace? An abandoned palace that is reported to be haunted. Or maybe an amusement park. In Cairo, Egypt, in the Heliopolis suburb, there stands a mansion inspired by the Hindu temple architecture of Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Orissa in India. Built in the early 1900’s by Baron Édouard Empain, a Belgian entrepreneur and architect, it is covered by ornate animals and figures.

    3: Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, Oregon
Lighthouses are full of romance and nostalgia, and sometimes terrible tales. Off of Oregon's North Coast stands one of the most ominous-looking lighthouses that you'll find anywhere in North America. The Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, nicknamed “Terrible Tilly,” was completed in January 1881 after 500 days of arduous Labour and horrible incidents. The surveyor was swept away.

    2: Lake Reschen, Italy
In 1946 an entire village in Italy was submerged underwater. Since then, only the steeple of the submerged 14th century church sticks out of the lake. Called Lake Reschen, the artificial lake was made as part of a dam project that would provide the area with electricity. Residents from the town in the valley were forced from their homes prior to the area being flooded.

    1. Bodiam Castle, England
Built in 1385, this castle is one of the most picturesque in Britain. It is often used as a representation of a perfect English castle. It was created to defend the area against the French in the Hundred Years War. Before the castle, there was a small fortification on the site, so it has been used as a strategic location for many hundreds of years.

    10. Bodie
A State Historic Park since the early 1960's, Bodie, California is a quintessential ghost town located east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. When a man by the name of William S. Bodey discovered gold in 1859 near what is now called Bodie Bluff, the destiny of this once great town was solidified.

    9. China’s Wonderland
‘Wonderland’ in China was supposed to be Beijing’s version of Disneyland. Developers promised the largest amusement park in Asia, but now the fantasy land has been abandoned since 1998. Set on 100 acres of land 45 minutes from the center of Beijing, Wonderland never made it past initial construction.

    8. Pripyat
The nuclear disaster of Chernobyl in 1986, left behind the ghost town of Pripyat. Located just 3km from the town was evacuated 36 hours after the meltdown happened. Many workers from the power plant lived in the city.

    7. Ghost Metro Stations of Paris
With a city like Paris, you would expect their extensive transit system to go through a number of changes over the years. But when new stations are introduced, others are abandoned, leading to a number of “ghost” stations, some of which were closed at the start of the second World War.

    6. Whitby Abbey
Located in the North Yorkshire area of England, Whitby Abbey is a monastery built in the Gothic style in the 13th century. Unfinished until the 15th century, the original monastery was believed to have been founded on the same site around 657 and became one of the most important centers in the Anglo-Saxon world.

    5. The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital
Ellis Island is famous for being the gateway to America for immigrants coming from overseas in the 20th century. But it may surprise you to know that one of the buildings on the island that played an important part in the lives of many of the immigrants is now abandoned.

    4. Maunsell Sea Forts
Large sea fortifications are standard for nations trying to protect themselves during wartimes. By WWII, most large fortifications were obsolete for most nations, but sea fortifications around the Thames and the Mersey Estuaries would prove to be integral to protecting English citizens.

    3. Cape Romano Sea Huts
On the southern tip of Marco Island in Cape Romano, Florida, there are a series of strange dome houses sitting in the sea. Rumors swirled that the structures were once home to a secret cult or buildings left behind by extraterrestrials, but the reality is far less strange. The homes were built in 1980 by a retired oil producer named Bob Lee, who had the idea to create self-sustaining, solar-powered homes.

    2. City Hall Subway Station, NYC
Like any big city, the subway system in New York is a big part of everyday life. So it might surprise you that the first subway station built in the city was abandoned just over 40 years after it was opened. Instead of falling into disrepair, though, the station, with its impressive vaulted ceilings and whimsical skylights, is in almost pristine condition.

    1. Craco, Italy
For those world travelers who are looking for a spooky trip off the beaten path, you may want to head to the small medieval village of Craco, Italy.
Located about 25 miles inland, the village was once inhabited by the Greeks. Tombs have been found on the island that date from the 8th century, but earthquakes, landslides and a lack of fertile farming land led the original inhabitants to abandon the town.
