  • Deadliest Journeys - Bolivia: The Road Of Death

    51:00

There are two worlds in Bolivia. That of the Altiplano, the highlands, perched at an altitude of more than 4000 meters. And that of the Amazon basin, which tops out at a few hundred meters above sea level. Between the two, there is a transition region, made of vertiginous precipices and trails that descend the Andean Cordillera in a few tens of kilometers. . It is the region of the Yungas, a country where the horizontal does not exist. In these valleys winds a road, the only means of communication between La Paz, the administrative capital of the country, perched on the Altiplano, and the riches of the Amazon basin. The Bolivians nicknamed it el camino de la muerte, the road to death. Highest point: the La Cumbre pass, 4700 meters, at the exit of La Paz. 78 kilometers further, we are barely 900 meters. Along this road of the impossible, we follow the story of a community of cocaleros, coca growers clinging to the slopes of the mountain. To carry their loads to the road, they stretched makeshift cables made of simple iron wires across the valley. An infernal zip line, nearly 400 meters long, 200 meters above the ground. We also share the daily life of a vachero, a truck driver who transports cows from the Amazon basin to La Paz, the highest metropolis in the world. 25 hours of journey on the road to death, done without stopping. Because you have to go very quickly: if a cow dies, the driver pays.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in (2018)

    Deadliest Roads - Java:

Guatemala, a small country in Central America, is one of the most violent states in the world. There were nearly 4,000 murders in 2018; amurder rate 20 times higher than France per head of population. Behind this slaughter are street gangs, known as Maras, who manage drug trafficking, prostitution and racketeering and spread terror among the population. The members shoot their rivals, or ordinary citizens who go against them, without hesitation.

After several weeks of negotiation, we were able to get an insider’s view of some of these gangs. We spoke to members like Pedro, who heads one of Guatemala’s most powerful Maras. They say that Pedro stopped counting his homicide victims after the eighteenth. We also meet Oscar, who has one of the most dangerous professions in the country: a bus driver. 250 drivers were shot by Maras killers last year, as a means to extort transport companies. Having been shot eleven times already; Oscar cannot do his daily job without constantly checking his mirrors. He isn’t just looking for bicycles. Faced with this crime and the powerlessness of the underequipped police force, some residents have chosen to organize themselves into a citizen’s militia, patrolling the streets at night equipped with guns, swords or baseball bats. But it is a risky undertaking; five of them have already lost their lives.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Bolivia (Comes the Flood) in 2014

    Deadliest Roads - Ghana:

Bolivia is a country ravaged with torrential rain, flooding and landslides. It is no surprise that after all the money the country has spent on safe roads, it has turned out worthless. The Bolivian highways are reduced to mud and floods.

Edgar and his son are embarking on a long journey across the country to transport Brazil nuts to the processing plant. Crossing tributaries and flooded grounds as well as constant risk of getting stuck; getting to La Paz is an almighty challenge.

Brazil nuts are one of the main industries in Bolivia. We trek into the depths of the Bolivian Amazon where a family of harvesters are collecting shells from giant Brazil nut trees. Their lives are constantly at risk from the threat of spiders, snakes, tarantulas and even falling shells, which can crack a skull immediately.

It is a country on the brink of a major natural disaster, be it flooding or landslides. Deforestation, too, causes huge environmental disruption.

    48:10

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in East Timor (2017)

    Deadliest Roads - Brazil:

It’s very difficult to locate East Timor on a world map. Wedged between Bali and Australia, this small island tries to escape from its isolation to stay connected to the outside world but resources are virtually nonexistent. Only farming and fishing allows the inhabitants to earn a few dollars per month. Timor found it difficult to recover from the terrible war, which brought the country to its knees after the Indonesian invasion between 1976 and 1999. There was an appalling loss of life — with between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths. Nowadays, the island is still split in half, with one part being Indonesian and the other Timor Leste, which has been independent since 2002. In the most remote villages, the residents are cut off from everything. The only option is a rocky track, which is often flooded during the wet season and even the slightest error could prove fatal. But this is the price of survival, and the farmers take the perilous journey to sell some vegetables at the market in the capital, Dili. After a 10 hour trip, a reward is not always guaranteed and there is plenty of disappointment.

They run through deserts, through ice and snow, deep into the jungle, along the water and over the mountains. The landscapes through which these routes wind are unique and exert their never-ending fascination even on regular travellers.

The roads at the Artic Circle are covered in ice and snow almost eight months out of the year. Conditions that would lead to a total collapse further south are routine for the experienced men of the High North on the road in their trucks. But the truckers work under the same time pressures as their colleagues in the warmer South: the goods must get to customers on time. The film accompanies truck drivers on their way from Nadym to Salekhard. They tell of their lifes in the endless landscape of ice and snow.

It is a road of mountain passes and India’s access to the roof of the world – the Himalayas. This 475-kilometre long route at the northernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent connects the cities of Manali and Leh at the heart of the Ladakh region. The term “highway” applies quite literally, since the route traverses five of the highest drivable mountain passes in the world – among these the Lohtang La at 3,978 metres above sea level, the Lachulung La at 5,059 metres and the Tanglang La at 5,325 metres. Crossing these passes is a challenge for both vehicle and man. The mountain peaks, still snow-capped even in the depths of summer, wide variety of vegetation and the fantastic and craggy landscape turn any journey into a captivating adventure.

    51:10

From the south to the north of Peru, deep canyons cut through the Andes mountain range. To supply gold mines, cultivate their vines or quite simply return to their villages, men have no other choice but to embark on improbable tracks, cut in the rock. At the end of the road, the big companies always find their place there, baited by the fabulous natural resources of the country, whether it is its basements filled with precious metals or its waters full of fish. But it is rare that all this wealth benefits small hands, those who have to bend in half at the end of the galleries, scrape the earth in the ammonia vapors or risk their lives at the end of a 60 rope. meters high, for a handful of euros ... From the valley of the Marañon river to the Cotahuasi canyon through the Paracas desert, this Route of the Impossible takes the crossroads of a Peru with grandiose landscapes, but where life comes at a high price ...

  • World’s Most Dangerous Roads | Bangladesh - The Nawabpur Road in Dhaka | Free Documentary

    43:18

World’s Most Dangerous Roads | Bangladesh - The Nawabpur Road in Dhaka (2010)

    World’s Most Dangerous Roads | India - Leh-Manali Highway:

In Bangladesh, the land with the highest density of population in the world (and the highest amount of corruption), the daily struggle to survive is fought everywhere, including the streets. Nowhere do people drive as brutally and recklessly as here. In Bangladesh you drive on the road like others drive with a bumper car: if you need space, you simply ram the car driving next to you. The police only came if there are fatalities. The biggest bottleneck in the transport system is the historical old town of Dhaka. Old Dhaka is a universe of its own, a world of bazaars in which every trade has its own quarter: there are streets of jewelers, sweets makers and fashionable tailors, and the vegetable wholesalers have their warehouses down at the port. The deliveries take place mostly on the river, the Buriganga River, a stinking cesspool. But the sold goods usually leave by land, and the customers also come by the land route – the Nawabpur Road. They generally come in buses or by rickshaw, where too many people are crammed into too little space. The traffic in Dhaka is everyday, normal madness. The film accompanies a rickshaw, a bus and a truck on their dangerous way through the streets of Dhaka and shows how it is possible to survive in what seems to be an incontrollable chaos.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in (2009)

    Deadliest Roads - East Timor:

A lifeline for the numerous villages in the region, the Duong Valley road is the only link between China, Burma, and Tibet. The film crew joins locals (and a very special pig!), aboard a collective taxi to explore the region. Things start well enough; for the first 30 km, the road is paved. However, the tarmac quickly gives way to a dirt track, perched on the side of a vertiginous ravine. Landslides punctuate the drivers’ progress, and passengers frequently have to get out and dig. It’s a bumpy ride, and the pig has to be moved from his precarious position on the roof of the vehicle to join the human passengers inside.

The drivers are fearless, ready to risk life and limb to complete their journeys. We encounter a crowd waiting at the entrance of an unfinished tunnel. The roof has collapsed, and the lorries cannot get through. The travelers work for long hours inhaling dust and carbon monoxide, hoping that the vibrations from the engines will not cause the tunnel to collapse on their heads.

High up the hills, woodcutters fell the trees to make carbon, before embarking upon a back-breaking hike to the roadside where they will sell their wares. To reach their destination they must swing across a 50-meter river on a make-shift flying fox, their heavy cargo in tow. Further along, a Buddhist monk loads heavy stones on the back of a geriatric pickup truck, and an entrepreneur gambles his savings on a lead mine. The stories of the Duong Valley’s intrepid inhabitants interweave with the drama of its beautiful but unpredictable landscape.

Lake Volta, located in the centre of the country, is the largest man-made lake in the world. Several times a week, the locals cross it to go to the market. But things get tricky when it comes to transporting livestock across the lake, especially when there are passengers on board.

Ghana is also renowned for its funeral rituals, notably their special coffins, which are made to represent the profession of the deceased during his or her lifetime. Coffin-makers compete on roadsides, with coffins coming in the form of multi-coloured fish, sewing machines, bibles, and even ‘bush taxis.’ Funerals are rarely a somber affair, and can often seem more like carnivals. A place for the dead to come back to life…

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Laos in 2013

    Deadliest Roads - Congo:

Landlocked and shrouded in historical mystery, Laos is home to dozens of forgotten tribes who reside in its vast rolling mountains and impenetrable jungles. One of the last standing communist countries, we travel along the Ho Chi Minh trail that was used to transport weapons in the Vietnam War. The countryside is still littered with bombs dropped by the Americans and travelling requires vigilant drivers.

We adventure in trucks, on the back of elephants, by car engine-powered speedboat and often on foot. The stakes are high for these courageous drivers, and the pressure is on for a safe passage in ferocious conditions.

Hundreds of miners scale a drop of over 2000 metres to get to the centre of the volcano, where they gather sulphur. They load as much as 80kilos onto their backs - like donkeys - before a back-breaking trek back up the volcano. They cover their mouths with scarves to try and protect themselves against the deeply toxic fumes which burn the lungs and eyes. The men are paid according to the weight of the sulphur they harvest. Two 80 kilo deliveries are possible over 11 hours. The pay: a salary of 8 euros.

    Deadliest Roads - Suriname:

The bravest drivers in Cameroon are named the “Clandos”; the name comes from the word clandestine or illegal. They drive illegal taxis and are the only ones who are brave enough to navigate the country’s dangerous road networks, some of the worst on the African continent. Only 2% of the roads have been asphalted. All of the country’s inhabitants rely on the Clandos’ taxi services, they have no other choice. The country has no railway and taking airplanes is both too expensive and too dangerous.

    Deadliest Roads - Ghana:

Torrential rain, flooded villages, crossings turned into rivers, overflowing sewage systems, people drowning in their own homes; the rainy season in Liberia is one of the most destructive in the world. For pennies, Fofana battles the conditions to take passengers through the jungles that occupy much of the country. His brave but hellish exploits reveal the country’s plights and desperation. Priests in a baptist church turn Mass into a lucrative tombola, exposing the church to corruption. Children as young as five are breaking stones to sell as gravel for next to nothing, instead of being at school. Workers of a multinational palm oil manufacturer are transported to the work sites in overcrowded animal containers to slave away under the sun. The difficulties of a country ravaged by civil war are exacerbated as transport routes are destroyed by avalanches of water and villages are cut off.

He has to entrust his live on a rusty iron pulley and a worn plastic bag.

On the other side of the valley, on the summit of the mountain range, is where the sisters Helen and Mariela live. Isolated, and in the heart of the jungle. Of all the children who attend the school, the sisters live furthest away. Fear, hunger, and exhaustion are their constant companions. For them, education the key to a new, better world. Highway to the Arctic: Canada's Ice Roads

World’s Most Dangerous Roads | The Canadian Ice Roads:

Every winter, ice roads are built across hundreds of miles in Canada's far north, connecting frozen rivers and lakes, and stretching up to the very northern tip of the country by the Arctic Ocean. For the people living in the remote villages of this region these “ice highways” are of vital importance. Until April, trucks are coming up here all the way from down south, bringing supply goods for the whole year to these locals, and life changes until the ice roads are melting again and disappearing into the ocean.

For decades, ice roads have been built across the icy tundra in Canada's far north, the Northwest Territories, every single winter. These so-called ice highways lead to a remote and inhospitable world impresses everyone with its raw beauty. It is a cold primeval world, almost unimaginable for Europeans these days, yet people are actually living there. The locals, who have settled in remote villages up here, have adjusted to the Arctic nature; the ice roads are their temporary connection to the outside world. While life in summertime can be tough and arduous, winter allows the locals to replenish their stocks, easily reach remote hunting grounds and turns the ice roads into a place for fairs where people can celebrate life and their culture.

World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Borneo (The Jungle Convoy) in 2016

    Deadliest Roads - Ghana:

Borneo is home to one of the last remaining primary forests in South East Asia. For timber harvesters, this is a goldmine. Lumberjacks and drivers come from all over Indonesia in search of the best salaries in the country. This is a dangerous job that is done in extreme conditions. The extensive deforestation has deformed the region to the extent that certain species of wildlife and the indigenous people that live there are under threat.

Borneo, the fourth largest island in the world, has become a symbol of this uneven fight between large corporations that exploit its riches at the expense of its inhabitants, nature and wildlife.

  • Deadliest Journeys - Myanmar: No Fear

    51:23

For more than half a century, the country has lived in isolation, cut off from the outside world by a succession of some of the toughest dictatorships on the planet. The Burmese regard their country as a beautiful sleeping girl. Today she opens her eyes a little but wakes him up hard. The country lacks everything, the infrastructure has been neglected for many years. But the Burmese keep smiling. In the North West, in the most mountainous region of the country, getting around is an adventure. The mountains reach 3000 meters in altitude and some roads climb to more than 2000 meters. With his truck, twice his age, Khampi struggles. Despite everything, man faces the roads or rather the tracks, with courage and coolness. Khampi never gets angry, he keeps a smile at all times even when he misses to tip over. The word “fear” seems to have disappeared from his vocabulary. The state of the roads is a serious handicap for the populations, but it has enabled the country to retain its beauty, its authenticity and its traditions. Young Sokna carries on an ancient ritual, the Kiss of Death. Legend has it that by kissing the head of a king cobra three times, the women of the village will quickly become pregnant. In Naypeedaw, the megalomaniacal capital erected by the military junta, highways hold a sad record. One of the least frequented on the planet. The country also holds another record, with the most terrifying train in Asia. It crosses a viaduct more than 100 meters high. Without any security. Barely a few centimeters separate the travelers from the void. Travel to the heart of Burma far from the tourist trails. Réalisateur 1
