The clash of two legendary and feared classes of warrior: the Mongols and the samurai. They meet on the beaches of Tsushima. What did combat between them look like? Misconceptions persist about this question: from the belief that samurai attempted “single combat” dueling to the idea that Mongols utterly dominated the samurai on the battlefield. Today, we look at the fascinating warfare that characterized the first and second Mongol invasions.

  • Ancient Chinese coinage

    1:19:06

Ancient Chinese coinage includes some of the earliest known coins. These coins, used as early as the Spring and Autumn period, took the form of imitations of the cowrie shells that were used in ceremonial exchanges. The Spring and Autumn period also saw the introduction of the first metal coins; however, they were not initially round, instead being either knife shaped or spade shaped. Round metal coins with a round, and then later square hole in the center were first introduced around 350 BC. The beginning of the Qin Dynasty, the first dynasty to unify China, saw the introduction of a standardised coinage for the whole Empire. Subsequent dynasties produced variations on these round coins throughout the imperial period. At first, distribution of the coinage was limited to use around the capital city district but by the beginning of the Han Dynasty, coins were widely used for such as when paying tax, salaries and fines.
Ancient Chinese coins are markedly different from coins produced in the west. Chinese coins were manufactured by being cast in molds, whereas western coins were typically cut and hammered or, in later times, milled. Chinese coins were usually made from mixtures of metals such copper, tin and lead, from bronze, brass or iron: precious metals like gold and silver were uncommonly used. The ratios and purity of the coin metals varied considerably. Most Chinese coins were produced with a square hole in the middle. This was used to allow collections of coins to be threaded on a square rod so that the rough edges could be filed smooth, and then threaded on strings for ease of handling.

    Episode 3
Wen Renjun was moved by Shanjun's past, and she persuaded Shanjun to take part in the newly established Qilin Poem Test and regain her childhood dreams. The two gradually developed a subtle affection of sympathy for each other.
The young warrior Zuo Xiaowei, General Hang Ruxue, returned to Beijing. Fu Yuanzhi used the friendship of his ancestors as a bargaining chip, begging him to secretly attack Shangdongyi Mountain with himself, rescue Wen Renjun, and find Wen Renjun’s best friend, and he has never forgotten his roots. Zhao Qinghe drew a topographic map. Zhao Qinghe fell in love with Hang Ruxue at first sight, but she dared not express her heart because of her coward and delicate nature.
Fu Yuanzhi and Hang Ruxue rushed to Dongyishan with a team of troops. Wen Renjing unexpectedly appeared. Not only did they not stop them, they also lent them their own troops.
On this day, the cottage was decorated with lights and festoons, and the mountain monarch ordered him to change into red clothes. Wen Renjun thought it was for her and Shanjun to hold a wedding, but Shanjun took the opportunity to tease him, only to realize that it was the annual Flower God Festival in Qingzhou City. At night, Shan Jun took Wen Renjun down the mountain to participate in the Flower God Festival parade. Before leaving, he took off his big beard and put on a tattooed white coat. He was actually a scholarly appearance, which made Wen Renjun almost recognize He can't come out!
This folk event feasted Wenren's eyes. Various interesting folk games and interesting poem lantern riddles all reflect the status of poetry in people's lives.
Under the stars, Shanjun is emotional, hoping Wen Renjun can stay in the cottage. Just when I was deeply affectionate, I suddenly found that the distant cottage was blazing and it was suspected of being invaded. Shanjun can only give up the confession and rush back to the cottage.
Wen Renjun arrived one step late, and Shanjun had already fought with the invading guards. She could only hide in the dark to help Shanjun cope, but she discovered that the invaders were Fu Yuanzhi and Hang Ruxue!
Hang Ruxue and Shan Jun's martial arts are comparable. When the outcome is difficult to distinguish, Shan Jun accidentally found a dropped crystal waistband-it is exactly the same as the one on the man who chased him nine years ago! In order to pick up the waist wear, Shan Jun divided his mind and was pushed down the cliff by Fu Yuanzhi from behind!

It was not a formal school, but a body of thought assessing common problems, usually concerning administration. The spirit of it's content may be readily recognized by western viewers through one of it's kindred, the Warring States period's Art of War. The academic term Realist is used more broadly to refer to any reformer or politico of Chinese history with a politically realistic, rather than only idealist Confucian bent. In the broader Confucian-dominated history most Realists could naturally be expected to be both, but during the Warring States period some such texts would be almost purely Realpolitikal. The old Realpolitik is viewed today as having worked to advance China's historically unitary state beyond feudalism.
Starting in the Spring and Autumn period, a trend of realistic reformers were taken on to advance the material interest of their respective states, with the Qin state founding what is commonly thought of as the first Chinese Empire, the Qin dynasty, in 221 BCE, ending China's Warring States period. Late Qin reformers would adopt an openly avowed, expansive rule by law, founding the Chinese Imperial State. Both would remain a matter of contention until the era of modern national identity and reform, following such impetus as the nomad dynasties and the Opium Wars. Though professing hatred thereof, the Qin administration would be inherited by the Han dynasty almost intact as necessary in running the large and complex territory, but with a relaxation of penalties. The administrative developments of the period continued to influence every dynasty thereafter.

    SUMMARY
    =======
The four occupations (simplified Chinese: 士农工商; traditional Chinese: 士農工商) or four categories of the people (Chinese: 四民) was an occupation classification used in ancient China by either Confucian or Legalist scholars as far back as the late Zhou dynasty and is considered a central part of the fengjian social structure (c. 1046–256 BC). These were the shi (gentry scholars), the nong (peasant farmers), the gong (artisans and craftsmen), and the shang (merchants and traders).
The four occupations were not always arranged in this order. The four categories were not socioeconomic classes; wealth and standing did not correspond to these categories, nor were they hereditary. The system did not factor in all social groups present in premodern Chinese society, and its broad categories were more an idealization than a practical reality. The commercialization of Chinese society in the Song and Ming periods further blurred the lines between these four occupations. The definition of the identity of the shi class changed over time—from warriors, to aristocratic scholars, and finally to scholar-bureaucrats. There was also a gradual fusion of the wealthy merchant and landholding gentry classes, culminating in the late Ming Dynasty.
In some manner this system of social order was adopted throughout the Chinese cultural sphere. In Japanese it is called mibunsei (身分制) and is sometimes stated as Shi, nō, kō, shō (士農工商,, shinōkōshō), although in Japan it became a hereditary caste system. In Korean as Sa, nong, gong, sang (사농공상), and in Vietnamese as Sĩ, nông, công, thương (士農工商). The main difference in adaptation was the definition of the shi (士).

Zhang Lei, founder of PINWU Design Studio and “From Yuhang Rong Design Library”, curator of “Rong-Handmade in Hangzhou” and “From Yuhang” Project.
Zhang Lei, Jovana and Christoph focus on Chinese traditional material while making contemporary design out of traditional craft. The signature design “Tie” Chair is inspired by the crafts of oiled-paper umbrella.
“From Yuhang Rong Design Library” opened in 2015, the first traditional Chinese material library in the world. We have two missions here. First, we transform the traditional Chinese crafts into materials that the designer aground globe can use through design library. Second, we promote a simple lifestyle of quality to the general public.
